David Farrar, Ph.D. RESEARCH OVERVIEW T cell ontogeny and development involves a series of lineage commitment choices that are initiated from the earliest lymphoid progenitor cells and continue to the final stages of terminal T cell differentiation during an immune response. Our research is focused on defining the molecular processes involved in controlling terminal differentiation of naive CD4+ T cells into functional subsets that secrete unique patterns of cytokines. For example, interleukin-12 (IL-12), secreted by dendritic cells and macrophages in response to bacterial products, drives naive T cells to secrete high levels of IFN-gamma. These cells are termed T helper (Th)1 cells and regulate inflammatory processes necessary to eliminate bacterial pathogens. By characterizing the signaling pathway of the human IFNAR, we discovered a remarkable mechanistic difference that accounts for IFN-alpha/beta-induced Th1 development in human, but not murine CD4+ T cells. In human T cells, IFN-alpha/beta signaling activates an important transcription factor, Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription (Stat)4, but such activation does not occur in murine CD4+ T cells in response to IFN-alpha/beta. Human Stat2 acts as an adaptor molecule to recruit Stat4 to the human IFNAR, but this molecular bridge does not exist in the mouse because there is a high degree of sequence divergence in the region of Stat2 responsible for docking of Stat4. Thus, the mouse has a specific defect blocking the ability of CD4+ T cells to activate Stat4 and undergo Th1 development in response to IFN-alpha/beta. Further, with regard to Th1 development, this specific link between innate and adaptive immunity in humans, bridged by type I interferons, does not exist in mice.

Olivia Newton-John - Biography Richard Olivia in 1966 O livia Newton-John was born in Cambridge, England on September 26th 1948; her family moved to Australia when she was 5. Her mother was German, daughter of the physicist Max Born, her father was Welsh, a professor of German at Cambridge and Melbourne. Despite the academic background, early on Olivia showed an interest in singing, forming a band called the Sol Four with some schoolfriends, and later on singing at her brother in law's coffee bar in Australia. She also starred in a movie "Funny Things Happen Down Under" which was forgettable apart from some early promise shown in Olivia's delightful rendition of "Christmas Down Under". A talent contest hosted by the Australian Johnny O'Keefe offered Olivia the prize of a trip to England, and she took this up in 1965. Her first introduction to making records was a one-off single deal with Decca Records. The single, Till You Say You'll Be Mine/For Ever, is extremely rare though these two songs were available (Oct 1994) on the British compilation CD Pop Inside the 60's. Englishman John Shelley was born in Birmingham UK in 1959 to an Anglo-Welsh background and grew up in Sutton Coldfield. JOHN FARRAR AND PAT CARROLL John Farrar was born in Melbourne Australia in 1946 on 8 th Nov. No details of his early life have been recorded for posterity but it is a safe bet that virtually all of his school-days' spare time was spent practicing guitar with a music career in mind since he was good enough aged 18 in 1964, with a Fender Telecaster as his main guitar, to join an established local band, The Strangers as their lead guitarist, evicting a founder member, Laurie Arthur. During the years 1964 to 1970 The Strangers recorded mostly singles, one EP and two LP’s. The vast majority of their later work being a mixture of cover versions of recent chart hits and some originals. In addition, they were used as an in-house backing group by W&G for several artists including Yvonne Barrett, Grantley Dee, Merv Benton, Pat Carroll, Russell Morris, Johnny Young, Little Gulliver, Peter Doyle, Billy Adams, Terry Dean, The Field Twins, Buddy England, Ronnie Burns, Johnny Farnham, Lynne Randell and Colin Cook Throughout this period they were very successful and were always in demand for TV work on ATV’s "Go!!" show and HSV 7’s "Sunnyside Up" for a period of 9 years. Pat Carroll herself released a number of singles on W&G, and Interfusion labels during the 1960’s and early 70’s all of which failed to chart. Her best known Pye single is "To the sun" which features Cliff on backing vocals. By the early 70’s Pat’s singles contract ended with Interfusion (Festival) records but John continued to use her for backing singing duties on most of Olivia’s 70/80’s albums.
