Evans, Mary Anne
Mary Anne Evans (1819-1880) worked for many years as an editor (frequently without compensation) before turning rather late in life to authoring fiction. Adam Bede , her first novel, was an instant success and is often considered the first English novel in the Realism school. Her next novel, Silas Marner , was (and is) very popular, as well; a later novel, Middlemarch , is perhaps her most critically acclaimed work. Evans used the male pseudonym "George Eliot" because, as an unmarried woman openly living with a prominent married man, her own identity was associated with terrific scandal. Interestingly, her lover (George Henry Lewes) was much less affected by the scandal, and was able to continue publishing under his own name, a circumstance which reveals a great deal about Victorian cultural standards in regard to gender roles. use your browser's "back" function to return to the text

I was from England, and I lived from 1819-1880. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? My influences included Miss Maria Lewis. Mary Anne Evans was born at South Farm, Arbury, on November 22, 1819. The youngest child of Robert Evans and Christiana Pearson Evans, she had four siblings: Robert, Fanny, Chrissy, and Isaac. Mary Anne shared an especially close relationship with her brother Isaac they were inseparable playmates. However, in 1824, Isaac was sent to school at Foleshill, and Mary Anne was sent to Miss Latham's boarding school. At Miss Lathim's, missing the companionship and comfort of her brother, Mary Anne first turned to books as a source of amusement. Those who knew her found Mary Anne a serious, sensitive, and introspective child. She had straight light-brown hair and a plain face.
Drastic changes soon occurred in Mary Anne's life. Her mother had been ill for quite some time. In February of 1839, Mrs. Evans died, and Mary Anne, then 19, left school to take care of her father. Though not the oldest daughter, Mary Anne had always been close to her father, and she tried to fill in for her mother while continuing her education at home (now Griff House). Robert Evans, proud of his daughter, bought Mary Anne any book she wished to have and arranged for her to receive lessons in Italian and German. In 1841, she and her father moved to a new home at Foleshill.

Silas Marner: The Weaver of Raveloe
Author Info: George Eliot
[Mary Ann Evans]
It's a fairly simple and straightforward story about the capacity of love to heal spiritual wounds and make damaged beings whole, hence its power. Her other novels are in vogue right now, particularly the unreadable Middlemarch , but this is clearly Eliot's best and one of the most affecting novels of the 19th Century.

G eorge Eliot (Mary Anne Evans: 1819-1880)
Mary Anne Evans was born at Arbury Farm, Chilvers Coton, Nuneaton. She was the daughter - by his second marriage - of Robert Evans, a builder and land agent. Evans was a man possessed of ambition, perseverance and great strength of both character and body. He is generally acknowledged to be the model of Caleb Garth in Middlemarch and of Adam Bede. As a girl, Mary Anne was a somewhat reserved and sensitive child with a remarkably developed intellect. It was she who took control of the running of her father’s house after the death of her mother in 1836. Her first published work – a religious poem signed "M.A.E." – appeared in The Christian Observer of January 1840.

Arch was born in the village of Barford, near Warwick, the son of an agricultural labourer. He himself worked as a labourer for many years, but because of his strength of character and his role as a Methodist lay-preacher became a leading figure in the area. He spoke out against the poor conditions of the working classes, and following an Act of Parliament in 1871 which legalised Trade Unions, he formed the Warwickshire Agricultural Labourers' Union. After a successful strike to raise pay, a National Union of Agricultural Labourers was formed, with Arch as President and its headquarters in Leamington. In 1885 he became Liberal MP for North West Norfolk, the first agricultural labourer ever to attain such a position.

For Immediate Release June 8, 2001 Bush Gaffe Proves Their Point, Unmarried Group Says President quotes famous unmarried author in speech promoting marriage In his remarks Thursday at the Fourth National Summit on Fatherhood, President Bush attempted to illustrate the importance of marriage with the words of a famous author who actually wasn't married to her long-term partner. The Alternatives to Marriage Project, a national nonprofit organization for unmarried people, says the slip proves their point that unmarried relationships are everywhere even among our most revered literary figures and deserve recognition and fairness. In the speech, Bush quoted George Eliot (the pen name of Mary Anne Evans), a renowned nineteenth century author. She never married her partner, George Henry Lewes, though their relationship spanned 24 years until Lewes' death. At the summit, Bush spoke of the importance of marriage and then read, "'What greater thing is there for two human souls,' George Eliot wrote, 'than to feel that they are joined for life to strengthen each other in all labor, to rest on each other in all sorrow, to be one with each other in silent, unspeakable memories at the moment of the last parting.'" "I have to thank President Bush for making our point so beautifully," says Dorian Solot, Executive Director of the Alternatives to Marriage Project. "When the President searched for words that spoke to the power of love and commitment, he found Eliot's." Eliot is cited on the Alternatives to Marriage Project's
