Louise Lyons Heustis: Southern Artist By Catherine L. Druhan The Vulcan Historical Review 4 (Spring 2000) Catherine L. Druhan, 2000. Louise Lyons Heustis Painting a Portrait of Mrs. Ralph Birdsall Little Girl and Her Doll “You can fill in the rest with a very happy life, take it all in all, and faithful work still continuing.” In 1936 Louise Lyons Heustis wrote those words to an admirer of her paintings. At the time she was residing in New York City establishing herself as a prominent professional portrait artist. She had achieved her goal through ambition and hard work. Heustis, a rare example of a successful woman artist, was a contemporary of Celia Beaux, Kate F. Clark, and Mary Cassatt. During the beginning of the twentieth century these women were among the first female artists to gain professional status. Heustis was a native southerner who left her home to achieve her educational and professional goals. Prior to 1900, southern women who wanted to gain independence from their families commonly aspired to careers as schoolteachers. During Reconstruction as southern public schools opened their doors, the school systems needed teachers, but the pay remained too low to attract men to the field. Outside of the teaching profession women most commonly occupied themselves within their home and community.

[ Author Information Bibliographic Details Kathleen Boone Samuels (1842-1925) of Front Royal, Virginia, penned twenty-five letters to her mother when she was a student at the Woodstock (Virginia) Female Academy in 1860. Clothes formed the major preoccupation of this exuberant teenage girl, who, despite repeated protests to her parents that she was concentrating on her lessons, filled her letters with discussions of the latest fashions and requests for various items of apparel. Her correspondence also sheds light on the curriculum of an antebellum female academy. In 1862, Kathleen became the bride of Green Berry Samuels, a young Confederate officer. This volume includes one letter from Kathleen to her husband, written after the end of the Civil War in 1865, urging him to obtain his release from prison and return home to his wife and baby daughter.

Women's Civil War Diaries and Papers - Locations I found a most interesting book called Mothers of Invention; Women of the Slaveholding South in the American Civil War One of the most difficult things to find in researching family history is information on our women ancestors. I thought that Ms. Faust's list was a gold mine of information for family researchers, and with the permission of The University of North Carolina Press, I abstracted the names of the women mentioned and the location of their documents. In the list below the name of the woman is listed first, then the type of document, the name of the collection, writing, book, article, etc. and where the item can be located. If the woman's maiden and married name was listed, she will be found alphabetically under the first letter of her married name. Search first using "find" and then scroll through the names. GOOD LUCK !!! I do not have any additional information on any of these women, books, articles, etc. Several of these diaries are now on-line. I printed off the letter as I want to challenge myself to see what my personal score will be. I certainly can ID many of them. My history classes are coming back to me after 50+ years!!! Of course I always enjoy your comments/contributions! charlotte Subject: Description of Crazy QUilt From: "Teddy Pruett" <aprayzer@hotmail.com> Oh, SUe, you are spoiling us so with these wonderful bits and pieces of descriptions of both history and fabrics!! As I read the account of the pieces for the crazy quilt, I kept thinking how descriptions such as that would affect my appraisals of the VCQ's that I see - let me see, they would be 5 or 6 pages long, which the client would love, and I could double my fee, which I would love.....naaaahh- don't see that happening. Teddy - who has just come in from the front goat pasture, where my 95 pound, 80 year old Mom (mighty Mouse) is mowing on her 45 year old tractor. What a woman!!! I'm back! I have had so many wonderful offers of the old quilts. But not one yet has revealed the Horn of Plenty quilt by Eveline Foland (KC Star, 1932). If anyone has access to a finished quilt in good condition, please let me know privately. Many thanks and now back to lurkdom.
