    Eliot, T. S. Eliot, T. S. (Thomas Stearns Eliot), , American-British poet and critic, b. St. Louis, Mo. One of the most distinguished literary figures of the 20th cent., T. S. Eliot won the 1948 Nobel Prize in Literature. He studied at Harvard, the Sorbonne, and Oxford. In 1914 he established residence in London and in 1927 became a British subject. After working as a teacher and a bank clerk he began a publishing career; he was assistant editor of the Egoist Criterion Prufrock and Other Observations Poems (1920), and The Waste Land The Waste Land, whose published version reflects extraordinary editing by Eliot's friend Ezra Pound , compelled immediate critical attention. His complex early poems, employing myths, religious symbolism, and literary allusion, signified a break with 19th-century poetic traditions. Their models were the metaphysical poets Dante , the Jacobean dramatists, and French symbolists . Their meter ranged from the lyrical to the conversational. In his later poetry, notably

Eliot, Groucho, Duck Soup On this day in 1964, T. S. Eliot wrote to Groucho Marx to confirm that he was sending a car to pick "you and Mrs. Groucho" up for dinner. Their meeting was after years of correspondence, beginning with an Eliot fan letter expressing admiration for Groucho's films. While not the alcoholic or literary event foreseen, the occasion became high comedy in Groucho's hands. Eliot and the Woolfs read it now!

Thomas Stearns Eliot was born September 26, 1888, into a family who traced its ancestry to the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His predecessors were prominent clergymen and educators and included Charles William Eliot, president of Harvard University, and three U.S. presidents, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, and Rutherford B. Hayes. Eliot grew up in St. Louis, Missouri where his grandfather had relocated the family from Boston. William Greenleaf Eliot was a Unitarian minister and educator and established the first Unitarian church in St. Louis as well as founded Smith Academy and Washington University. T. S. Eliot was educated first at Smith Academy and then sent back to Massachusetts for further studies. Eliot’s credits include great works in poetry, criticism, drama, and editing/publishing. While he was still a student he wrote poems that remain milestones in literature. The first was "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," written 1910-1911. In 1922 he wrote
