Eliot, T. S.
Thomas Stearns Eliot (1888-1965) was one of the most influential and innovative Modernist poets. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, was educated at Harvard and later at Oxford University, England. He arrived in England shortly before the outbreak of WWI, and stayed for the duration. Having married an English writer, Vivian Haigh-Wood in 1915, he chose to remain in England permanently. Eliot's first wife was highly neurotic and suffered increasingly bad health. The strain brought Eliot to the verge of a nervous breakdown, and he spent time in a Swiss sanitorium. Eliot left his wife in 1937, and didn't remarry until 1957. He had already written the first of his major poems, The Love Song of Alfred Prufrock in 1915, but after his return from Switzerland to England in 1922, his tour de force, The Waste Land (set in a mythological London), was published after some editorial help from his friend, fellow poet and rival, Ezra Pound. Other major works of Eliot's are The Hollow Men (1925), a critique of Western civilization, and

T.S. Eliot
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Thomas Stearns Eliot was the son of Charlotte Stearns, a sometime amateur poet strictly committed to New England beliefs, and Henry Ware Eliot, a successful businessman. His grandfather, William Greenleaf Eliot, a Unitarian minister with a strong sense of civic and religious duty, had moved from Massachusetts in 1831, founding the local church, school, and the college which subsequently became Washington University. Thus, growing up a “South Westerner,” Eliot was nonetheless always aware of his New England heritage, an awareness deepened by his mother’s tutelage, by regular family summer vacations on Cape Ann, and by his education at Milton Academy (1905–06) and Harvard (1906–10, 1911–14).
However strong these American influences, Eliot chose to live almost his entire adult life abroad. In 1910 he went to the Sorbonne for a year, and after three graduate years studying philosophy at Harvard, he went to Merton College at Oxford on a fellowship. In September, 1914, he met Ezra Pound, to whom he read “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” Pound immediately recognized its merit and persuaded Harriet Monroe to publish it in

October 1999 Classical Poet: T. S. Eliot (1888-1965)
By: Roberto Quintos , Contributing Writer
T. S. Eliot ranks among the most important poets of the 1900's. In "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," "The Waste Land," and other poems, he departed radically from the techniques and subject matter of pre-World War I poetry. His poetry, along with his critical works, helped to reshape modern literature. Eliot received the 1948 Nobel Price for Literature.
His life. Thomas Sterns Eliot was born in St. Louis. He studied at Harvard, the Sorbonne in Paris, and Oxford. He settled in London in 1914. Eliot was working as a bank clerk when his poems came to the attention of the American poet Ezra Pound. Pound encouraged Eliot, and helped him with his poetry.
Many of Eliot's views on literature appeared in "THE CRITERION," a literary magazine he edited from 1922 to 1939. Eliot served as a director of a London publishing house from 1925 until his death.
In 1927, Eliot became a British subject, declaring himself "Anglo-Catholic in religion, royalist in politics, and classicist in literature."
His works. Eliot's first major poem, "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock," (1917), revealed his original and highly developed style. The poem shows the influence of certain French poets of the 1800's, but its startling jumps from rhetorical language to cliche, its indirect literary references, and its simultaneous humor and pessimism were quite new in English literature.

Her er Eliot satirikeren som bl.a. ironiserer over moderne kjærlighet.
    Modernismens frontfigur
Året 1922 markerte et litterært gjennombrudd for modernismen. James Joyce ga ut romanen Ulysses mens T.S. Eliot ga ut det store diktet The Waste Land.

This link leads to artifacts, teaching tips and discussion questions for this author. Born in St. Louis, Thomas Stearns Eliot was one of seven children. Originally from New England, the Eliot family's lineage was bound to both religion and education. Eliot's grandfather, a graduate of Harvard Divinity School, moved to St. Louis in 1834, where he began a Unitarian Church and founded Washington University, which became one of the nation's elite educational institutions. Eliot's father was a successful business executive, but it was his mother, Charlotte Stearns, from whom he seems to have inherited his literary sensibility. She was a poet, and her biography of Eliot's grandfather, William Greenleaf Eliot, was published in 1904.
    The Waste Land
In 1914, while in England, Eliot met Ezra Pound, who was to become one of the most influential figures in his life and career. It was Pound who first recognized Eliot's genius, proclaiming he "has actually trained himself and modernized himself on his own." Pound became Eliot's mentor and proponent, as he convinced editors to publish his work. Then as now, however, it was hard for anyone to make a decent living as a poet, so Eliot taught school for a while and eventually took a job as a clerk at Lloyd's Bank in London, where he worked while writing

Eliots poesi tillhörde till stor del T E Hulmes intellektualiserade imagistiska skola, men ett av hans idag mer kända verk är ändå barnboken Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats som ligger till grund för den populära musikalen Cats .
