What is BELS?
T he Board of Editors in the Life Sciences (BELS) was founded in 1991 to evaluate the proficiency of manuscript editors in the life sciences and to award credentials similar to those obtainable in other professions. The Board was founded by 10 editors who had long been active in national and international professional associations in scientific editing and publishing. They began working on the development of the certification program in the early 1980s. They were assisted by consultants in testing and by administrators of certification programs in other professions. BELS was incorporated in the state of Maryland on January 23, 1991, and the first official certification examinations were offered that year. Membership now numbers in the hundreds and represents countries all over the world. Three credentials are offered:
  • Certification. Diplomate. Honored editor.
Certification
The certification examination is a 3-hour multiple-choice test of scientific editing in English. It resembles the standard tests used in many professions to certify practitioners. The program is designed to assure employers or clients of editors that a Board-certified editor has established a high level of credibility. Editors who successfully complete the certification examination may use the designation ELS (Editor in the Life Sciences) after their names. More information about the certification process and the examination schedule is available on the

For the purposes of this page, an ``image editor'' is defined as a paint or drawing program that supports pixel-level editing (or the equivalent). As a general rule of thumb, if it's got a pencil or paint-brush tool, it's in; if it supplies only ``algorithms'' (such as sharpening, blurring, edge-detection, cropping, etc.), it's not. Information Analytics has developed 4W Publisher, a Windows-based tool that not only stores all Web pages in a database, it also automatically builds main menus and keyword indexes to go along with the detail pages. 4W Publisher stores the body text of a detail page separately from the header and footer and optional menu bar, so your entire service will have a consistent (and easy to maintain) look and feel. When pages are updated, it builds the menu and indexes, plus all the hypertext links to the detail pages. 4W Publisher runs under Windows 3.1 and uses Microsoft's Access Jet Engine as its underlying database. This means you can write other applications that can access your product database, perform automated updates and generate printed reports. For more information, see the 4W Publisher home page at

    Introduction
The CBE Manual recommends two systems of documentation. One is name-year ( N-Y ) based, similar to the APA Manual. The other is a citation-sequence ( C-S ) system that uses numerical listing of sources in the sequence they are mentioned in the paper. Sample papers in both systems follow the examples. You can find the complete coverage of the CBE style of documentation in Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors and Publishers

Council of Biology Editors (CBE) Scientific Style
S cientific Style and Format (6th ed.), a publication of the Council of Biology Editors (CBE), outlines proper documentation style for writers in many areas of the sciences, and particularly the biological sciences. CBE bases its standards for documentation on those presented in National Library of Medicine Recommended Formats for Bibliographic Citation (NLM 1991). In its style manual, CBE offers two different systems of documentation: the Citation-Sequence System and the Name-Year System. Both systems are treated in the following section. A content-based comparison of NYC's free dailies
From Editor and Publisher , an astute comparison of the editorial content in New York City's two free daily tabloids - Metro NY and amNewYork . According to the article, Metro NY, part of the Metro International chain of free daily tabloids in 16 countries, focuses on international news and is primarily composed of wire stories, while amNewYork's front page features local crime news and its internal articles are more likely to be written by staff members. Other interesting comparisons were that Metro ran a travel section where amNewYork included health coverage, and less than 25% of Metro's pages are devoted to ad-space, compared to over 40% in amNewYork. Internet sources stem from the principles presented in the sixth edition of Scientific Style and Format The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers
    http://www.bedfordstmartins.com/online/cite8.html
This chapter's guidelines for citing Internet sources stem from the principles presented in the sixth edition of Scientific Style and Format: The CBE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, published by the Council of Biology Editors (now the Council of Science Editors) in 1994. Many writers in the natural sciences use the citation style recommended in the CBE Manual, which also gives advice for styling and formatting scientific papers, journals, and books for publication. Its editors offer two methods for citing and documenting sources: the citation-sequence system and the name-year system. Important note: The seventh edition of Scientific Style and Format , which will be published soon, gives new recommendations for citing electronic sources. While these recommendations are not included here, you can find out more about them by visiting the CSE’s Web site at http://www.councilscienceeditors.org/pubs_citing_internet.shtml
This section briefly describes the citation-sequence and name-year citation systems. Use the system preferred by your instructor or by the journal you are writing for, and consult Chapter 30 of the CBE Manual
