MARIA EDGEWORTH

(1767 - 1849) novelist
Born 1 st Jan 1767, Black Bourton, Oxfordshire, England Second child of Richard Lovell Edgeworth; educated in England. The family went back to Edgeworthstown, County Longford, in 1782, where Maria became her father's chief assistant in running the property and educating his numerous other children. Her first publication, Letters to Literary Ladies (1795), was much influenced by her father's ideas on women's education. The Parent's Assistant was published in 1796. Her first novel, Castle Rackrent (1800), was an immediate success. Scott said in the original edition of Waverley that his aim was 'in some distant degree to emulate the admirable Irish portraits drawn by Miss Edgeworth.' Another novel, Belinda , followed in 1801. Essays on Irish Bulls (1802) was written by herself and her father. Visited Brussels and Paris 1802. Received a proposal of marriage from a Swedish count, Edelcrantz; refused from a sense of duty to her family. Back at Edgeworthstown in 1803 she wrote sitting at a table in the family sitting-room, undisturbed by surrounding talk and activity. Her father encouraged her, provided plots, and sometimes inserted long passages of his own composition.

Longford: Loveliest County of the Irish Plain
Photo by Brian Kelly, Local Longford by Suzanne Barrett L ongford is a quiet place, not remembered for famous battles, saga or myth. Its lakes and streams make up a sizable portion of the county's topography. Its rivers flow into the mighty Shannon, which takes on the appearance of a broad lake as it flows along the Longford shore. In Longford , the Grand Canal, a man-made wonder of the nineteenth century, adds an additional watery aspect. But the true beauty of Longford lies in its quiet countryside of farmlands, bog, the occasional low hills and its pleasant views. Cairn Clonhugh at 916 feet is the highest point in Longford. Never a strategic center, Longford has seen battle during the Confederate Wars of 1641.

    Irish fiction
Although the epics of Celtic Ireland were written in prose and not verse, most people would probably consider that Irish fiction proper begins in the 18th century. However, there are aspects of Early Irish prose that appear to have had some influence on the Irish novel: the use of exaggeration for humorous effect, a near obsession with lists, and a strong sense of satire . This article is concerned with the history of Irish fiction written in English . For Irish fiction written in Irish , see Modern literature in Irish . For a general overview of Irish writing in all genres, see Irish literature
    The 18th Century
Irish fiction can be said to begin with the publication in of Jonathan Swift 's masterpiece Gulliver's Travels . This novel, often treated as a book for children, is one of the most savage satires in the English language and set the highest possible standard for Irish writers to come. The next Irish novelist of importance was Laurence Sterne ). Stern was born in Clonmel, County Tipperary and was in his mid-forties when he published The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentlemen

1848 - The Year of the Seneca Falls Convention Living in the year 1848 was much different than living in the year 1998: the United States of America was geographically a different country, American culture was very different, and the issues and events of the day were very different from today. James Polk was President and Zachary Taylor would be elected to the Presidency in the fall elections. Land west of the Mississippi was "the west" and the Pacific coast was "the far west." New states were regularly being created out of the land between the Alleghenies and the Mississippi. America had just signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican War. With peace and the announcement that gold was discovered in California , America returned to its spirit of buoyant optimism. Transportation and communication were slow and cumbersome: waterways still dominated transportation. It is no accident that the women's rights movement took hold in upstate NY - Seneca Falls was on the Erie Canal line, the interstate highway of the day. A few railroad lines had been laid in the east, but the first railroad lines west of the Mississippi were not laid until 1852. Communications were by words spoken in person or written on paper, the first telegraph patent would not be issued for more than 25 years.
