The Infant's Library Practical Education Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817) was a member of the Birmingham-based Lunar Society - a circle of 'enlightened' scientists, inventors and philosophers who specialised in the practical application of science and technology to industry. Edgeworth himself made advances in the fields of telegraphy and electricity but is renowned for his 'discoveries' and keen lifelong interest in another field of 'experimental science': education. Edgeworth tested his theories concerning education on his own children and employed his second wife, Honora, to record the children's responses to different forms of teaching. Honora's notes formed the basis of a collection of stories entitled Practical Education (1780) but it was not until 1791 that Edgeworth began to plan a general essay on education, assisted by his daughter, Maria (1767-1849). Their treatise, Practical Education , appeared in 1798. The Edgeworths did not claim to be entirely original and made frequent references to the works of previous educational theorists, including John Locke's

    http://victorian.lang.nagoya-u.ac.jp/concordance.html
This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts. My warmest thanks go to a colleague of mine, Dr. Masahiro Komatsu (Graduate School of Languages and Cultures, Nagoya University), who was kind enough to write the C++ program.

    Historical statement

The Edgeworth family seems to have originated at Edgware in Middlesex. Two brothers, Edward and Francis, arrived in Ireland in about 1583. Francis (died in 1627) was granted land near Mostrim (later Edgeworthstown), county Longford in 1619, during the plantation of the county. Francis's great-grandson was Richard (1701-1770). His son, Richard Lovell (1744-1817), was a noted scientist, educationalist and writer. Richard's daughter was the novelist Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849), author of classics including Castle Rackrent (1800) and The Absentee (1812). Like her father, she was interested in a variety of subjects and had contact with many of the leading writers and people of letters of her time. Many of her works reflect her keen awareness of social, economic and political issues.
