Growing up in the landed gentry of Ireland , she used her experiences to write her novels about the Irish. Maria Edgworth was born in Berkshire , England on January 1, 1767 the daughter of Richard Lovell Edgworth, a noted inventor and author. Her mother died when she was only six years old and she was sent to school in Derby when she was seven and remained their until she was fourteen. Her father placed much importance on his daughter’s education, hoping she would be able to contribute something of substance to the world. While attending school Maria became a extraordinary story-teller and writer. Her early attempts at fiction were a bit melodramatic, but as she grew-up her literary skills grew also.

26. Maria Edgeworth And Classical Political Economy
His aunt, the Victorian author, Maria Edgeworth (17671849), could claim the title of the first political economist in the Edgeworth family.
http://www.cswep.org/edgeworth.html
Maria Edgeworth and Classical Political Economy William Kern, Western Michigan University Amongst economists the name Edgeworth is a familiar one owing to the significant contributions of the British neoclassical economist Francis Ysidro Edgeworth. But what is less well known is that F. Y. Edgeworth was not the first in the Edgeworth family to have a considerable interest in economics. His aunt, the Victorian author, Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849), could claim the title of the first political economist in the Edgeworth family. Maria was born in England, though she lived most of her life in Ireland. The family had owned property in Ireland for nearly two centuries when on Maria's fifteenth birthday her father, Richard Edgeworth, moved his family to the family mansion at Edgeworthstown. Edgeworthstown was her home until her death in 1847. The family estate was a large one involving a myriad of activities including the assignment of leases, the collection of rents, and the improvement of the land. In addition, as the most significant property owner in the hamlet, her faather also had a degree of political influence and obligations. As one of the eldest of the twenty-two children which Richard Edgeworth fathered, considerable responsibility fell to Maria both in conducting the affairs of the estate and in educating her siblings. She was, in the words of one of her biographers, "his right hand." As a result, she acquired a familiarity with economic and political matters rare for a woman of her age.

What Some Women Should Not
Have Said About Jane Austen
A Male Voices Web Page Jane Austen is a great favorite with women and always has been. However, it simply isn't true that she is a women's novelist only. That never was the case; Jane Austen was recognized and acknowledged from the earliest times by men of her own generation. It is only recently that some confusion has developed over this matter. It is not my purpose to understand the source of that confusion; rather, my goal is to clear the air by supplying clear evidence of male voices in praise of Jane Austen. I have done that, for example, with the quotes of Walter Scott Richard Whateley Thomas Macaulay E. M. Forster ... C. S. Lewis , and so many others. On the other hand, there were men, such as Mark Twain and D. H. Lawrence , who "didn't get it" and that fact might be used to undermine my main contention. For that reason, I will use this space to show that a number of women didn't get it either and so, in that kind of perverse way, I reaffirm the great Jane's gender neutrality. One word of warning - this posting causes pain and creates anger. In one particular case, there is a great deal of pain for all of us. Also, you might be a bit anguished by another quote which only gives me a good giggle (

http://14.1911encyclopedia.org/E/ED/EDGECUMBE.htm
EDGECUMBE
EDGECUMBE Edgecumbes brother, George, 1st earl of Mount Edgecumbe (1721-1795), was a naval officer who saw a great deal of service during the Seven Years War. Succeeding to the barony on the 1st barons death in 1761 he became an admiral and treasurer of the royal household; he was created Viscount Mount-Edgecumbe in 1781 and earl of Mount-Edgecumbe in 1789. He died on the 4th of February 1795, ~his only son being his successor, Richard, the 2nd earl (1764.1839), the ancestor of the present earl and the, author of Musical Reminiscences of an Old Amateur. He died on the 26th of September 1839. His son, Ernest Augustus, the 3rd earl (1797-1861), wrote Extracts from Journals kept during the Revolutions at Rome and Palermo. After his death in 1817 Miss Edgeworth occupied herself with completing his Memoirs, which were published in 1820. The book was the excuse for an attack on Mr Edgeworths reputation in the July number of the Quarterly Review, which Miss Edgeworth had the courage to leave unread. Her life at Edgeworthstown was varied by visits to London., to Lord Lansdowne at Bowood, Wiltshire, to the Misses Sneyd in Staffordshire, and to many other friends. In 1820 she was again in Paris, and in 1823 she spent a happy fortnight with the Scotts at Abbotsford. In 1825 Scott went to Edgeworthstown, and their i-elations were always cordial. - Miss Edgeworths production was less after her fathers death. Sequels to Rosamond, Frank, Harry and Lucy in the Early Lessons were published in 1822-1825. Comic Dramas appeared in 1817, and Helen in 1834. She worked to the last, and in 1846 labored strenuously for the relief of the famine-stricken Irish peasants. She died on the 22nd of May 1849.

Edgeworth, Maria. Leonora. London: Printed for J. Johnson 1806 Two volumes, octavo., [2], 291, [1] p.; [2], 291, [1] p., Quarter period-style calf over marbled boards, gilt spines with red morocco labels., Occasional light browning. Overall a very good copy in an attractive binding. First edition., Leonora was written after Maria Edgeworth (1767-1849) returned from Paris, where she had received a proposal of marriage from a Swedish count named Edelcrantz. Though she had refused him, largely because she was not prepared to move to Stockholm, the book was written to meet his tastes. However, it was subjected to wider than usual editing by her father, Richard Lovell Edgeworth. Leonora was one of Edgeworth's novels of English society, along with Belinda (1801, praised by the heroine in Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey), Patronage (1814) and Helen (1834).
