Charles Harpur: Selected Poetry and Prose
edited by Michael Ackland
Cover illustration: Detail from Mount Wellington with the Orphan Asylum - Van Dieman's Land , John Glover 1837 Dustjacket synopsis:
"Charles Harpur was one of the first and most important of Australia's native-born poets. From the time he bagan writing in the 1820s till his death in 1868, he was concerned with celebrating the beauty of the Australian landscape, and attempting to improve the intellectual life of his fellows. "Harpur was a vigorous advocate of republican ideas; and, just as rigorously, opposed transportation, the arrogation of power by a landed elite, and privilege of all kinds. His writings also provide important insights into contemporary attitudes towards national identity, faith, Aborigines, women, education and love. This book brings together Charles Harpur's best-known poetry and prose - including a number of works out of print since the poet's lifetime." First Paragraph from the Introduction: Charles Harpur is now acknowledged to be our most important colonial poet, but it was not always so. In his own lifetime, Harpur attracted both sincere praise and downright abuse. Among his friends he could number the future Colonial Secretary and Premier, Henry Parkes, the literary Maecenas of Sydney, Nicol Stenhouse, and the gifted native youth, Daniel Deniehy; all of whom hailed him as a writer of genius. Their encouragement, however, was more than counterbalanced by contemporary derision and incomprehension. The first survey of Australian writing, G. B. Barton's

In 1719, North Carolina governor Charles Eden purchased the Eden House property Period II
Artist's Reconstruction from the sons of former owner Henry King. By this time, people had lived at this location for over forty years. At least several of the original buildings were still standing. Eden constructed a fine plantation house north of the original site and renovated at least two of the buildings that were later excavated by Coastal Carolina Research By the time Charles Eden arrived on the property, many of the conditions that had made life hazardous for earlier inhabitants in the Albemarle Sound region had vanished. Settlement was underway in the nearby town of Edenton, and the pirate Edward Teach, more commonly known as Blackbeard, had been captured and killed. Piracy continued to be a problem for several more years, but starting around 1720 settlers began to expand their farms. The 1715 peace treaty with the Tuscarora Indians effectively removed the threat of Native American hostility. In this period of newfound peace and expansion Eden used the plantation as a seat of government. Eden's ownership of the property was not destined to be long-lived, however. He died there on March 16, 1722, from yellow fever, only four years after purchasing the property.

Spring in Eden Park
By Elizabeth Chambless Eden Park is one of the beauty spots of Cincinnati, where the Conference of the Hard of Hearing will be held June 2-6 Editor Spring has roamed on Eden's hills And touched them with her finger; The beauty of the change she wrought Has made the lady linger. We saw three robins in the grass; We heard them chirp and sing; Then stood and watched them soar away Three robins on the wing! We saw a great shrub, butting With little yellow flowers We wandered over greening hills For breathless, happy hours.

Frederick Calvert, Sixth Lord Baltimore and Henry Harford
    by John T. Marck
In Part 3 of my articles on the Lords Baltimore, we look at Frederick Calvert, the sixth and last Lord Baltimore, and his son, Henry Harford. Part 3 of 3. Shown in the picture is Frederick.
This article sponsored by YOUR AD COULD BE HERE! Frederick Calvert Sixth Lord Baltimore and Henry Harford Frederick Calvert was born February 6, 1731 in Epsom, Surrey, England. He was the son of Charles and Mary Jansen Calvert, and was Maryland's sixth and last Lord Baltimore. Frederick's father, Charles Calvert, fifth Lord Baltimore, died on April 24, 1751. Frederick had two sisters, Louisa and Caroline. Upon his father's death, Frederick inherited the proprietorship of Maryland, making him the sixth Lord Baltimore, and immense wealth and considerable political connections. His wealth included an income of about ten thousand pounds sterling a month, derived from collected rents and taxes, large shares of stock of the Bank of England, and his resident estate at Woodcote Park, in Surrey. It was through this wealth that enabled Frederick to live a life of high style and leisure. Through this life of leisure, Frederick traveled extensively, but never visited Maryland. His travels took him throughout Europe, especially Italy where he would stay for long periods and Constantinople, where he lived for a while. Interestingly, Frederick's extravagant lifestyle actually interfered with his duties as the Proprietor of Maryland; however, at the same time he is credited with building Anglo-American relations in Maryland. The building of these relations, although believed to be accidental on Frederick's part, did come at a good time during the imperial crisis of the 1760s and 1770s. Although raised as a Catholic, he professed the Anglican faith to which his grandfather converted, to aid in regaining his proprietary colony after the crown held it.
