Loss of Eden: A Biography of Charles and Anne Morrow Lindberg > Customer Review #1: Joyce Miltons Walk Into the Lindberghs Garden of Eden

Joyce Milton focuses on the marriage of Charles and Anne Lindbergh. Because the pivotal event in their lives was the kidnapping of their first-born son, it occupies about half the text. Milton examined FBI files to uncover facts not previously cited in books on the kidnapping. Most striking to students of the case was her discovery of a connection between Duane Baker (real name Duane Bacon) and Charles Henry Ellerson, a chauffeur in the employ of Anne Lindberghs mother, Elizabeth Morrow, in Englewood, New Jersey. Ellerson had driven Betty Gow, nurse for the Lindbergh child, from Englewood to Hopewell on the day of the kidnapping; this is significant, because the kidnapper (supposedly Bruno Richard Hauptmann) would have had no reason to expect the Lindberghs to be in Hopewell on Tuesday, March 1, 1932. They had never spent a weeknight in the house before, so anyone with knowledge of their whereabouts was a suspect.

President of the Board of Trade
The Board of Trade and Plantations was created in Britain on May 15 in order to promote British trade and improve "our plantations in America and elsewhere. There were 15 (and later 16) members of the Board - 7 (later 8) Great officers of state, and 8 unofficial members, who did the majority of the work. The senior unofficial member of the board was the President of the Board of Trade . The board was abolished on July 11 , but reestablished on March 5 , and more strongly focused on commercial functions than the previous board of trade. At first the President of the Board of Trade only occasionally sat in the cabinet, but from the early 19th century it was usually a cabinet level position. Since 1970 President of the Board of Trade has been a secondary title of the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry (1970-1974 and 1983-date) or Secretary of State for Trade (1974-83), though Michael Heseltine preferred to be known by the older title during his time in office in the mid-1990s. The office is currently held by Patricia Hewitt Table of contents 1 Presidents of the First Board of Trade, 1696-1782

By John T. Marck Frederick Calvert was born February 6, 1731 in Epsom, Surrey, England. He was the son of Charles and Mary Jansen Calvert, and was Maryland's sixth and last Lord Baltimore. Frederick's father, Charles Calvert, fifth Lord Baltimore, died on April 24, 1751. Frederick had two sisters, Louisa and Caroline. Upon his father's death, Frederick inherited the proprietorship of Maryland, making him the sixth Lord Baltimore, and immense wealth and considerable political connections. His wealth included an income of about ten thousand pounds sterling a month, derived from collected rents and taxes, large shares of stock of the Bank of England, and his resident estate at Woodcote Park, in Surrey. It was through this wealth that enabled Frederick to live a life of high style and leisure. Through this life of leisure, Frederick traveled extensively, but never visited Maryland. His travels took him throughout Europe, especially Italy where he would stay for long periods and Constantinople, where he lived for a while. Interestingly, Frederick's extravagant lifestyle actually interfered with his duties as the Proprietor of Maryland; however, at the same time he is credited with building Anglo-American relations in Maryland. The building of these relations, although believed to be accidental on Frederick's part, did come at a good time during the imperial crisis of the 1760s and 1770s. Although raised as a Catholic, he professed the Anglican faith to which his grandfather converted, to aid in regaining his proprietary colony after the crown held it.

Third, Fourth, and Fifth Lord Baltimore

    By Joh n T. Marck
Charles Calvert was born August 27, 1637, and was the only son of Cecilius Calvert, second Lord Baltimore, and his wife, Anne Arundell, daughter of Lord Arundell of Wardour. Charles had only one sibling, a sister. Charles was commissioned governor of Maryland on September 14, 1661, and served as such until the death of his father, November 30, 1675. Upon his father's death he succeeded to the proprietorship of the province, and the third Lord Baltimore. Being a Catholic, his position as governor and as proprietor came with many problems, as Protestants in the colony outnumbered the Catholics ten to one. Additionally, the ranks of the dissatisfied were increased with recruits from those who had come to the colony as convicts or as indentured servants. His problems continued with the Susquehanna Indians, who were hostile. Charles Calvert was married four times. His second wife, Jane, was the daughter of Vincent Lowe and the widow of Henry Sewall. Charles and Jane had several children, one of which was Benedict Leonard Calvert, the fourth Lord Baltimore. Charles' children were intent on making government a family affair. This attitude was successful for a short time, but passed to incompetent guardians soon after Charles's departure from England in 1684, when Charles went to defend his charter and territory from attacks by William Penn. Calvert's charter and territory were overthrown in 1689 by a Protestant association led by the irreverent John Coode. In 1692 a royal government was established.
