Back to American Women introduction Mary Baker Eddy While lying in bed severely disabled from a fall in 1866, Mary Baker Eddy read the biblical account of Christ's healing of a man's paralysis. Suddenly her own malady eased, and she was overcome with a belief in faith's healing powers. As she later put it, she "had touched the hem of Christian Science." In the years following, she gradually evolved a religious system that held that the human spirit, properly guided by Christian principles, could overcome physical suffering. In 1875, she presented her convictions to the world in Science and Health , and four years later she formally established the Church of Christ, Scientist. The church had few followers at first, but by the early 1900s, adherents to Christian Science numbered into the many thousands and were spread throughout the world. While Eddy was posing for this portrait over a three-week period in 1889, she worked on a revised version of Science and Health . The bust's maker, Luella Varney, had been trained in Italy and included among her sitters Mark Twain and Julia Ward Howe

Church of Christ, Scientist
General Information Christian Science is a religion emphasizing divine healing as practiced by Jesus Christ; its tenets were formulated by Mary Baker Eddy. In 1879, Eddy founded the Church of Christ, Scientist, with its headquarters in Boston. Today it has about 3,000 branch churches, societies, and college organizations in more than 50 countries. While the branches are democratic in government, they all conform to the rules laid down in the Manual of The Mother Church (1895) by Eddy. Sunday services consist mainly of readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures (1906), the textbook of Christian Science written by Mary Baker Eddy. Wednesday meetings include testimonies of healing from the congregation. The church has no ordained clergy. Readers, both men and women, are elected from the membership to conduct the services. Practitioners, also both men and women, devote full time to the work of spiritual healing. Christian Science teaches that God and his spiritual creation are the only realities. God is regarded as infinite Life, Truth, Spirit, Mind, and Principle. The material world, with all its suffering, strife, and death, is considered to be a misconception or distorted view of the divine universe. Christian Science claims to prove through the healing of disease and other difficulties that the understanding of God and his spiritual creation is as effective now as it was in Jesus' time. Its adherents therefore rely on divine law in times of sickness instead of resorting to medical and other material means. The right of Christian Science parents to withhold medical treatment from their children has been challenged in court.

Boston.

Mary Baker Eddy, born in rural New England in the 1800's, overcame many hurdles to become an acclaimed author, publisher, and religious leader whose impact is still being felt today. In 1995, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame for "making an indelible mark on society, religion, and journalism." How did this independent New England woman rise from obscurity to become, as Human Life magazine described in 1907, "the most famous, interesting and powerful woman in America, if not the world, today"? Eddy (1821-1910) was born and raised on a farm near Concord, New Hampshire, in the United States. Because of many bouts of illness, she received most of her education at home, sometimes with the help her brother, Albert, a student at Dartmouth College. This turned out to be an advantage, given the many restrictions on women's education in 19th century America.

Mary Baker Eddy
Mary Baker was born in Bow, New Hampshire in 1821. She was very sick as a child and was unable to attend school, so she was educated at home by her older brother. At a young age, she began publishing her own poetry in periodicals.
As an adult, she remained ill until meeting Dr. Phineas Quimby, who introduced her to mental healing. Mary believed that the cause and cure of all diseases are mental, which led to the founding of the Christian Science Publishing Company. She then published her beliefs in a book entitled Science and Health She also founded and became the editor of the Journal of Christian Science In 1879, the First Church of Christ, Scientist was formally chartered and Mary served as the head. She taught hundreds of students, mostly female, to spread the word about Christian Science and to recruit new members.
Mary Baker Eddy was the only American woman to found a lasting American-based religion. She has won 6 Pulitzer Prizes for her publications and her Science and Health was voted “one of the 75 books by women whose words have changed the world” by the National Women’s Book Association.

History of the Church:
Mrs. Eddy (as she is referred to by church members) was a student-associate of Quimby until his death in 1866. Her health initially improved under his care, but she later suffered a relapse. Shortly afterwards, she fell on an icy sidewalk and severely injured herself. Some did not expect her to survive. On what she believed to be her deathbed, she read one of Jesus' healings. She suddenly realized that healing comes not from internal bodily processes, or from the power of a person's mind, but from the Divine Mind, God. She was instantly cured! Mrs. Eddy withdrew from society for three years in order to concentrate on a deep search through the Bible and discover precisely how her healing had taken place. She wished to share this knowledge with others, and to give them the tools to take away sin and achieve health. Mrs. Eddy then wrote her main book, Science and Health , later called Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures . The book has since been published in 17 languages, and is available in English Braille, on audio cassette, CD, and in software packages.

By Jenny Pettersson Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) was not only the founder of the Christian Science movement but also a pioneering thinker and writer. In spite of her times' view of women, she managed to make herself heard. She became an influential American author, teacher and religious leader. She had groundbreaking ideas about spirituality and health. Her by far most famous work is Science and Heath with Key to the Scriptures, which still is a best selling book. The Mary Baker Eddy Library is a reference and research facility located at 200 Massachusetts Avenue in Boston. This facility offers access to the Mary Baker Eddy collection, free Internet and a place to read books and magazines. Its focus is on the themes of spirituality and health, women in leadership, and the quest for spirituality.
The library also offers exhibitions including the Hall of Ideas, the Mapparium, the Quest Gallery and the Monitor Gallery. The Hall of Ideas is a beautiful hall where different ideas concerning life are floating around on the floor and up the walls. In middle there is a fountain made together with the MIT Media Lab. In this fountain, you will be greeted in twenty different languages and it's filled with even more ideas of life. Here you can sit and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere or visit the café at the end of the hall.
The Mapparium is a world-famous three-story, stained-glass globe. Inside this marvelous globe, you can stand and listen to the changes in the world surrounded by the world. The Quest Gallery, which is located on the second floor, is devoted to the questions of humanity, questions like "Who am I?" and "What is the purpose of life?" Here you can read about Mary Baker Eddy and her work and you can participate in different interactive exhibits.
