I will work within my capabilities to set a good example, help those less fortunate when I can and seek the truth in all things so that when I die, I can do so with pride looking back on a life well-led. I pledge this not for patriotism, not for religious leanings, and not through coercion by family, peers, society, educational or legal systems, but because as an intelligent human being I choose to dedicate my words and actions to personal principle and steadfastness. The Great Mystery
Eastman, Charles Alexander, 1858-1939. The Soul of the Indian
THE GREAT MYSTERY
Solitary Worship. The Savage Philosopher. The Dual Mind. Spiritual Gifts versus Material Progress. The Paradox of "Christian Civilization."
THE original attitude of the American Indian toward the Eternal, the "Great Mystery" that surrounds and embraces us, was as simple as it was exalted. To him it was the supreme conception, bringing with it the fullest measure of joy and satisfaction possible in this life.
The worship of the "Great Mystery" was silent, solitary, free from all self-seeking. It was silent, because all speech is of necessity feeble and imperfect; therefore the souls of my ancestors ascended to God in wordless adoration. It was solitary, because they believed that He is nearer to us in solitude, and there were no priests authorized to come between a man and his Maker. None might exhort or confess or in any way meddle with the religious experience of another. Among us all men were created sons of God and stood erect, as conscious of their divinity. Our faith might not be formulated in creeds, nor forced upon any who were unwilling to receive it; hence there was no preaching, proselyting, nor persecution, neither were there any scoffers or atheists.
There were no temples or shrines among us save those of nature. Being a natural man, the Indian was intensely poetical. He would deem it sacrilege to build a house for Him who may be met face to face in the mysterious, shadowy aisles of the primeval forest, or on the sunlit bosom of virgin prairies, upon dizzy spires and pinnacles of naked rock, and yonder in the jeweled vault of the night sky! He who enrobes Himself in filmy veils of cloud, there on the rim of the visible world where our Great-Grandfather Sun kindles his evening camp-fire, He who rides upon the rigorous wind of the north, or breathes forth His spirit upon aromatic southern airs, whose war-canoe is launched upon majestic rivers and inland seas He needs no lesser cathedral!

"...I actually saw more birds and fauna at the hato than I did in the Peruvian amazon region. Thanks again for an experience of a lifetime." Thresa Stone, U.S.A.
A Naturalist's Dream... Lazy giant tortoises leave their mark as they cut a path through the bamboo. The storks' flight bothers neither the herds of zebus grazing up in the lush green hills, nor the graceful white-tailed deers or peccaries down below on arid lands turned red by the afternoon sun. Playful monkeys hang in the branches of purple and gold-flowered trees and mock the caymans below, while the tapirs bask in the sun under the watchful eye of the parrots. The jaguars and pumas come out at night. There are more than a million animals living here in total safety. Filled with Exotic Wonders... Because hunting has been banned for over 50 years, wild animals exhibit a sense of security not readily seen in many nature parks. Visitors to the ranch can observe numerous species of birds and mammals at extraordinarily close distances as they travel through the area in the search for food. Some of the regularly seen mammals at Piñero include: foxes, ocelots, capuchin and red howler monkeys, capybaras, white-tailed deer, tapirs, anteaters, and peccaries. ...And Accomodating Relaxation

Dr. Charles Alexander Eastman Native American M.D., Author
Eastman received his medical degree from the Boston University School of Medicine in 1890 and began medical service for the Office of Indian Affairs later that year. Eastman served at Pine Ridge Agency, South Dakota, and was an eyewitness to both events leading up to and following the Wounded Knee Massacre of December 29, 1890.
Pine Ridge was located only miles above the massacre site, and Eastman treated Native American victims of the United States Army's attack. Eastman continued work at various posts as reservation physician until 1903. He served as president of the Society of American Indians following World War I, then joining Carlos Montezuma in directing a Society campaign to abolish the Office of Indian Affairs. During the 1920s, Eastman served the government as an inspector of reservation conditions. He died on January 8, 1939.
Ohiyesa was first named Hakadah (the Pitiful Last One), because his mother died shortly after his birth, somewhere near Redwood Falls, in southwestern Minnesota, in 1858. His first volume of memoirs depicting his traditional life, raised by his Wahpeton grandmother does not make it clear that almost all this boyhood took place in Manitoba, Canada, after the band had fled U.S. Army and bounty-hunters, following the defeat of the Dakota uprising in Minnesota, in 1862.
Uncheeda (Ohiyesa's grandmother) and several of his siblings lived in Manitoba, with other Minnesota Dakota refugees, from 1862 - 74 on the land of his uncle, Mysterious Medicine, who had a farm in wooded country in Manitoba, Canada.

To potential readers, worried about the authenticity of this work and its right to speak for Native Americans: The question of how closely the words of this book follow the words of Black Elk has long been debated. It will not be decided here. Turn to the scholarly literature if you truly wish to pursue an answer. I have done that and in my mind (and I do have some education in these realms) am at peace with the book as a genuine expression of turn of the century Lakota spirituality. Neihardt may have written the words, and Ben Black Elk (Black Elk's son) may have done the translating, but Black Elk lived the life, as is corroborated by other sources. I use the work in my introduction to religion classes, to bring another world to life for my students. Is Black Elk's vision theirs? Of course not. Is the book even Black Elk's vision? Perhaps not exactly. But it is a vision of power and every now and then it awakens a vision in students living 100 years after Black Elk. I belive Black Elks speaks and there is some power in his words still.
