Albrecht Durer Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) was a German painter and engraver.On travels to Venice, Durer was greatly influenced by Italian Renaissance art. He took home many new ideas and skills, fusing the German and Italian methods of painting and becoming the leader of the German Renaissance school of painting. Most famous for his engravings, Durer produced a vast number of woodcuts and is regarded as the inventor of etching. His copperplate engravings include three masterpieces: St. Jerome in his Study Knight, Death and the Devil; and Melancolia. Durer's sensitive landscape and nature studies, characterized by realistic detail, also stand out as important works of art. With his pencil and watercolors, he captured the special textures of nature. Two good examples are The Great Piece of Turf and The Hare. Durer's many self-portraits reflect an amazing self-awareness, showing how he felt about himself at various stages of his life. He painted the first at age 13 and the last at 52, four years before his death. A collection of more than 100 of his works can be seen in the Albertina Museum in Vienna.

Prints by Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) from the collection of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, including 16 prints from the series The Life of the Virgin December 11, 1999 - January 30, 2000 The Life of the Virgin Executed over several years, the Life of the Virgin does not seem to have been initially conceived as a group. It was probably only after creating a few of the images that Dürer thought of publishing the whole. Despite this, the series has a unity of spirit and tone which is masterful. Throughout the set the Virgin is conceived of as an intermediary between the divine and the earthly. She is a woman with human frailties—note her urge to run up the stairs of the temple and concern at the circumcision—and yet just as surely she is marked by God. The whole of the series is marked by virtuoso use of line and superb cutting. Dürer makes use of classical and contemporary motifs and a distinctly northern landscape which serves to bring the images closer to the audience. From German 16th Century Prints . Italian painters He was perhaps the most original creative German artist, and he influenced generations of artists in northern Europe. He learned much from the Italian painters, and combined their discoveries with the tradition of his German homeland. Christian spirit Durer combined a love of the ancient world with a deep Christian spirit. His works include the engraving, Knight, Death, and the Devil; a woodcut series, The Smaller Passion; and the self-portrait in the Prado in Madrid. Two of his most notable paintings are Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand and Adoration of the Magi. As an engraver, Durer developed the methods of Martin Schongauer, and combined them with the lessons of Andrea Mantegna to bring that art to its highest perfection in his century. He probably drew the designs for his woodcuts in the blocks, then carved away the wood to create wood engravings. They were widely copied. His woodcuts are inventive, exuberant, sometimes grim and grotesque. Home Nuremberg Durer was born in Nuremberg, where he probably learned how to engrave from his father , a goldsmith. For three years, he was apprenticed to Michel Wohlgemuth (1434-1519). At 19, he may have visited Italy.

Albrecht Durer Born: 21 May 1471, Nuernberg Married: 1494, Agnes Frey, Nuernberg Died: 6 April 1528, Nuernberg ALBRECHT DURER, perhaps the greatest German artist of the Renaissance era, began his career in the Imperial Free City of Nuernberg with his father, a Hungarian goldsmith who had emigrated to Germany in 1455. Despite his goldsmith origins, however, by 1484 Durer had already begun painting. In 1486 he was apprenticed to the painter and printmaker Michael Wolgumut and began to work with woodcuts and copper engravings as well. Beginning in 1490 Durer travelled widely for study, including trips to Italy in 1494 and 1505-7 and to Antwerp and the Low Countries in 1520-1. During his visit to Venice on his second Italian trip Durer was especially influenced by Giovanni Bellini and Bellini's brother-in-law Andrea Mantegna , each then near the end of his career. In The Uffizi: A Guide to the Gallery (Venice: Edizione Storti, 1980, p. 57) Umberto Fortis comments that Durer's journeys enabled him "to fuse the Gothic traditions of the North with the achievements in perspective, volumetric and plastic handling of forms, and color of the Italians in an original synthesis which was to have great influence with the Italian Mannerists."
