43. Albrecht Dürer ~ 1471-1528
He was born in 1471 the second son of Albrecht Dürer the Elder and Barbara Holper. Dürer can be found at http//www.kfki.hu/~arthp/bio/d/Durer/biograph.html.

Albrecht Dürer was one of the greatest artists of the German Renaissance. He worked in many media, woodcut, engraving, oil, watercolor, and produced portraits and self-portraits, religious works and altarpieces, as well as studies of animals and plants.
He was born in 1471 the second son of Albrecht Dürer the Elder and Barbara Holper. His father was a goldsmith and he began his art training as a draughtsman in his father's workshop in Nuremberg. In 1486 he was apprenticed to Michael Wohlgemut for three years. He studied in Italy, the Netherlands, and Basel. He married Agnes Frey, the daughter of a Nuremberg merchant in 1494. In 1518 he met Martin Luther at Augsburg, and later became a follower of the reformer. The Head of Christ below is generally attributed to Dürer. However, it is the work of Hans Sebald Beham, in the style of Dürer. (The date of Dürer's birth is also incorrect on the stamps from Mali. He was born in Nuremberg in 1471.) The Resurrection is a woodcut done in 1510, part of the "Large Passion." It is in the Graphische Sammlung Albertina, Vienna.

The Complete Woodcuts of Albrecht Durer by Albrecht Durer, Willi Kurth (Editor) The Complete Engravings, Etchings and Drypoints of Albrecht Durer by Albrecht Durer Albrecht Durer by Jane Campbell Hutchinson Book Description from Amazon: "Albrecht Durer (1471-1528) was one of the world's great artistic geniuses, unique among his contemporaries in his ability to translate the basic principles of the Italian Renaissance into the northern European style to which he was born. In addition, he was an exemplary figure of the early Reformation: one of the first people to become interested in Martin Luther's writings, he also counted most of Germany's leading humanists among his friends. This major biography links Durer's artistic development to his personal life and to the turbulent history of pre-Reformation Europe." Woodcut by Durer of a coarse and rather gross horse which lacks breeding. The man was using what was available in the horse market. Ann Hyland (1999), The Horse in the Middle Ages , figure on page 23 (1 of 2 images). Woodcut by Durer of a strong and reasonably well-bred horse up to weight, owned and bred by a man of moderate means, with a lop-eared nag in the background. Ann Hyland (1999), The Horse in the Middle Ages , figure on page 23 (2 of 2 images). Albrecht Durer, Knight, Death and the Devil, 1513. Durer's engraving The Small Horse of 1505 applies geometrical measurement to equine proportions and thus extends his study of human proportions in the Adam and Eve of the previous year. Here Durer again employes his scheme of ideal proportions, but the result is more naturalistic, in response, perhaps, to closer study of Leonardo's sketches and to Verrocchio's horse and rider. Earlier horses by Durer simply stand; this one trots. Walter Liedtke (1989), The Royal Horse and Rider: Painting, Sculpture, and Horsemanship 1500-1800

Durer, Albrecht (1471-1528), the most famous artist of Reformation Germany, widely known for his paintings, drawings, prints, and theoretical writings on art, all of which had a profound influence on 16th-century artists in his own country and in the Lowlands. Until his death, he made notes and drawings for his best-known treatise, the Four Books on Human Proportions. Artists of his day, however, more visually oriented than literary figures, looked more to Durer's engravings and woodcuts.

Durer was born in Nuremberg Germany in 1471. His father, a goldsmith, would be the first art teacher to his son. After studying with his father, Durer would next study with a local master learning the trade of engraving woodcuts for various illustrations. At that time
Nuremberg and southern Germany was a center for publishing. Woodcuts and engravings were used in creating illustrations for the documents published there. 16th century German art was in part influenced by the Gothic style of the Middle Ages and by the current religious movement: the Reformation and the teachings of Martin Luther. During his lifetime Durer, like the later Rembrandt, would paint a number of self portraits. This, also like Rembrandt, showed his lifelong curiosity with self exploration and with his role as an artist.

    Durer's Polyhedra
Albrecht Durer, the remarkable German renaissance printmaker (1471-1528), made an important contribution to the polyhedral literature in his 1525 book, Underweysung der Messung, available in English translation as Painter's Manual . It was one of the first books to teach the methods of perspective, and was highly regarded throughout the sixteenth century. Durer travelled to Italy to learn perspective and wanted to publish the methods so they were not kept secret among a few artists. Who he learned from is not known, but Luca Pacioli is a likely possibility. Some of the techniques and illustrations follow very closely the work of Piero della Francesca Durer's Underweysung der Messung contains a very interesting discussion of perspective and other techniques and it typifies the renaissance idea that polyhedra are models worthy of an artist 's attention. More importantly, this book presents the earliest known examples of polyhedral nets , i.e., polyheda unfolded to lie flat for printing. The image at right is Durer's drawing of the net of an icosahedron . While the net is correct, his techniques of perspective were still under development, and it is interesting to observe that the projection at the upper right has a number of inaccuracies.

http://www.alchemylab.com/melancholia.htm
Interpretation of this Drawing (by John Read) Early in the sixteenth century, the famous German artists and engravers, Albrecht Durer and Lucas Cranach, were influenced to some extent by alchemical ideas and symbolism, but they left no pictorial impression of an alchemist or his laboratory. Durer (1471-1528), one of the two greatest artists Germany has ever produced, was particularly skilled in drawing on the block for the wood-cutter and in engraving on copper with his own unsurpassed hand. In 1513 and 1514 he wrought three engravings on copper that will rank for all time among the world's select masterpieces of this form of art. These were "The Knight " (1513), "St. Jerome in his Study" (1514), and "Melencolia" (1514). There is no evidence that Durer had an acquaintance with alchemy so intimate as, say, that of Chaucer in an earlier age; nevertheless, alchemy formed an essential ingredient of the cultural background of his times. To contemporary men of culture in general, as to the alchemist in particular, the "Melencolia" must have appeared as a rich repository of the pictorial symbolism of alchemy. The Roman numeral "I" following the engraved title suggests at once that Durer had it in mind to design and execute a series of four copper-engravings illustrating the Four Temperaments: melancholic, phlegmatic, choleric, and sanguine. These were linked in the medieval mind with the Four Elements of the alchemists and certain other mystical groups of four, a magical number inherited from the early civilizations that flourished long before the time of Pythagoras.
