Sequel to Winterhold and a nominee for the Frankfurt e-Book Award. "Blood plays a key role in the lives of the people who inhabit a planet locked in perpetual winter. A young novice Interpreter is brought from the far North to the Hold by the Queen's own bodyguard. He becomes enmeshed in the violent political and social battles which riddle the Hold. Revolutionaries try to tear apart the ancient social fabric, while the aristocracy attempts to preserve it. And the Interpreters use both factions to further their own ends. When he finds out the truth concerning his birth, he must struggle even more to free himself from the meshes of both Hold and Camp."

      Henry Green (Henry Yorke): Nothing

The British writer Henry Green's literary skill went far beyond a comedy of manners, which this book appears to be on the surface. Dense with meaning, "Nothing" is a short literary gem, which forces the reader to read a million nuances into the witty and yet deeply dense conversations which make up the entirety of the book. Arnold Bennett: The Old Wives' Tale

Published in 1908. This study of the changes wrought by time on the lives of two English sisters during the 19th century is a masterpiece of literary realism. Constance and Sophia Baines, the daughters of a shopkeeper, grow up in the rural town of Bursley. Sophia eventually runs off and settles in Paris with her husband, who is a cad, and Constance remains behind in England and marries the mild-mannered shop assistant. The sisters are reunited years later when they are old, and Bennett skillfully contrasts what has remained stable in their characters with the differences time and environment have produced in their personalities. This long and ambitious work established Bennett's reputation as a novelist. (*****)

Dunsany, Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett 18th Baron (1878-1957) The ornate fantasy of Lord Dunsany (otherwise known as Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett; he was the eighteenth Baron Dunsany) was the product of a writing career of astonishing longevity, extending from the first decade of this century through 1948; he died in 1957. His literary works are highly poetic and imaginative. They began in 1905 with the mythological novel The Gods of Pegana. At Yeats's invitation he wrote many plays for the Abbey Theatre, including The Glittering Gate (1909) and The Laughter of the Gods (1919). His verse is contained in Fifty Poems (1930) and Mirage Water (1939). He also wrote an autobiographical series: Patches of Sunlight (1938), While the Sirens Slept (1944), The Sirens Wake (1945) and To Awaken Pegasus (1949). He achieved enormous popularity with his stories, novels, and plays (he was also an accomplished dramatist, perhaps the only major one in the literature of fantasy); this bejeweled style was of a piece with all the exotica of the East being discovered by the pre-World War I Intellectuals through the Ballets Russes and the ever-growing importing of art and ideas from India and the Moslem world. There are innumerable short stories, all the very essence of concise elegance. Typical are "The Hoard of the Gibbelins," in which it is told how the Gibbelins, who eat, "as is well known, nothing less good than man," protected their hoard of wealth from an epitomal Hero (and oh, what a devestating last sentence that story has!), and "The Distressing Tale of Thangobrind the Jeweller, and the Doom Than Befell Him" (whose title alone should intrigue), the hero of which has an encounter with Hlo-hlo, the spider idol.

Of all the weavers of magic, there is none like Lord Dunsany. During his long lifetime he wrote more than sixty books: novels, plays, poetry collections, memoirs, essays and, most memorably, innumerable exotic and fantastical short stories.
In this definitive collection are the very best of Dunsany's extraordinarily evocative tales of Faerie, of dream-worlds and of magic: some of the loveliest fantasies in the English language, including the complete contents of Time and the Gods, The Book of Wonder, The Sword of Welleran and The Last Book of Wonder
