http://xoomer.virgilio.it/guidematt/page102.html
Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett (1878-1957), eighteenth Baron Dunsany, was an english aristocrat and could trace his lineage back to before the Norman Conquest. A lover of rifles and hounds, he fought in the Boer War and in the First World War and was wounded in Dublin in the Easter Rebellion of 1916. He was a chess champion, a teacher of English in Athens and a highly successful playwright, but most of all he was the father of modern "heroic fantasy". He used to write, we are told, with a quill pen flowing a superb prose, that sings with a lyric style modeled on the prose of the King James Bible. He sketched worlds and cycles of myths and legends in which the flavour of the Orient, the ellenic classicity, the teutonic gloom and the celtic melancholy mix together completing one another with a perfect balance yielding a feeling of dreaming beauty, always fighting against the coarseness and the ugliness of every day life.
The novel The King of Elfland's Daughter is about magic: not just the magic and romance that can be found in the mundane world, but also the fearful, distant and awesome magic of Elfland, and it tells us about the perils of inviting magic into our world. Though it is a story about elves, princes, trolls and unicorns, it is not a reassuring one, on the contrary it leaves us quite uneasy, and its final is all but comforting. The novel shows us that one cannot try to put together our world along with Elfland, just like the marriage between a young prince of this world with a princess of the magic line is doomed to go to ruin: all that can happen is that Elfland get the upper hand of our world. Anyway, while reading this novel one should just trust the poetry, the strangeness and the magic that flow out of Lord Dunsany's exquisite workmanship and enjoy it slowly like a rich red wine.

DUN EMER
CUALA PRESS
In 1902, Evelyn Gleeson founded the Dun Emer Industries specifically for the training and employment of young Irish women. The name of the enterprise translates as "Emer's Fort," Emer being the wife of the legendary hero Cuchulain. Deeply influenced by the Irish renaissance, the products were to be made of Irish materials as far as possible and reflect Irish themes. The products were hand-printed books, embroidery, tapestries, and carpets. The Yeats family was involved from the beginning, Lily with the textiles and Elizabeth with the press, and W. B. as the literary editor The following are the Dun Emer and Cuala Press holdings in the Rare Book Collection, which holds nearly all of the 77 numbered titles. Titles which are not held are in a black smaller point type. Additional miscellaneous publications are also held and are listed after the numbered entries. The numbers are from: Miller, Liam.

Sir Stanley Unwin
Letters, 1888, 1914-1966 The letters of Sir Stanley Unwin (1884-1968) were acquired by Washington State University Library by purchase through the Sotheby sale of July 23, 1976 (lot 24). The forty-one letters were processed in August 1976 by Roberta Stokes.
Approximate number of items: 41
BIOGRAPHY Sir Stanley Unwin (1884-1968) was an author and head of the English publishing house of George Allen and Unwin, Ltd. which he established in 1914. A strong proponent of international cooperation in book matters, he served as president of the International Publishing Association, 1936-1938 and 1946-1957, and traveled extensively throughout the world collecting information on organization and publishing techniques from booksellers and publishing houses. DESCRIPTION AND ARRANGEMENT OF THE LETTERS The letters are arranged in a single sequence, alphabetically by the last name of the writer of the letter. These letters were, for the most part, received through the firm of George Allen and Unwin Ltd. and concern publishing matters. It may be assumed that Sir Stanley chose to separate them out from his business files (note, for example, the pencilled instructions on Priestley's letter to make a copy for the file) because these were letters from the now or soon-to-be famous and he wished to keep them in his personal files.
