    Dumas, Alexandre Biography
One of the most famous French writers of the 19th century. Dumas is best known for the historical novels The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo, roman feuilleton , the serial novel. Dumas is credited with revitalizing the historical novel in France, although his abilities as a writer were under dispute from the beginning. Dumas' works are fast-paced adventure tales. They are not faithful to the historical facts, but blend skillfully history and fiction. Diable! ' he said, after having swallowed the divine preserve. 'I do not know it the result will be as agreeable as you describe, but the thing does not appear to me as palatable as you say.'
(from The Count of Monte Cristo Histoire de France and Pierre de L'Estoile's Memoires-journaux "All for one, one for all, that is our device." (from The Three Musketeers Before 1843 Dumas wrote fifteen plays. Historical novels brought Dumas enormous fortune, but he could spent money faster than he made it. He produced some 250 books with his 73 assistants, especially with the history teacher Auguste Maquet, whom he wisely allowed to work quite independently. Dumas earned roughly 200,000 francs yearly and received an annual sum of 63,000 francs for 220,000 lines from the newspapers La Presse and the Constitutionel . Maquet often proposed subjects and wrote first drafts for some of Dumas' most famous serial novels, including LES TROIS MOUSQUETAIRES (1844

~ Alexandre Dumas French novelist and dramatist Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870), born on this day in Paris , was the grandson of a Haitian slave. Great is truth " he said, "Fire cannot burn it nor water drown it." Self-educated, he was said to have been inspired by the Caribbean escapades of his father, a mulatto general in Napoleon 's army who died when Dumas was four years old. Dumas is best known for writing The Three Musketeers (1844), the adventures of four heroes living during the reigns of Louis XIII and Louis XIV. His swashbuckling work helped create the historical novel genre. "The chains of wedlock are so heavy it takes two people to carry them, sometimes three," he wrote. Influenced by the plays of William Shakespeare and fiction of Sir Walter Scott, Dumas' novels were romantic and passionate "You should not attempt to outwit a woman ," he wrote. His popular stories blended fiction and fact and dealt with universal themes: The ideals of youth ... Thirst for glory... Excitement of worlds to conquer... Urgency of heroic causes to defend... Willingness to risk it all for friendship or love Happiness is like those palaces in fairy tales whose gates are guarded by dragons. We must fight in order to conquer it," said the fast-writing, fast-living author of 250

This talent brought him international fame as well as a vast fortune which he hastened to squander on his mistresses, travel, women and general indulgence such as the Château de Monte Cristo, an estate he had built outside Paris and into which he sank a colossal fortune.
By 1850, his profligacy bankrupted him and he escaped partly to flee his creditors and partly to revive his increasingly fading inspiration. This enterprise failed and Dumas returned to Paris in 1864 to end his days in poverty, supported only by his daughter and his son Alexandre (a playwright known as Dumas Fils.)
Alexandre Dumas died from a stroke, in 1870. He remains one of the most famous and widely read French writers of all time, whose genius continues to inspire screenwriters.

Alexandre (Davy de la Pailleterie) Dumas 1802 - 1870
(Full name Alexandre Davy de la Pailleterie) French novelist, dramatist, memoirist, historian, essayist, and short story and travel writer.
    INTRODUCTION
Dumas is regarded as one of the world's premier storytellers. Enormously popular and prolific, he wrote two of the best-loved and most widely read novels in literary history, Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844; The Three Musketeers ) and Le Comte de Monte Cristo (1845; The Count of Monte Cristo; or, The Revenge of Edmond Dantes). He also helped to inaugurate and popularize Romantic drama on the French stage with his two plays Henry III et sa cour (1829; Henry III and his Court) and Antony (1831).
    BIOGRAPHY
Dumas was the child of Marie-Louis-Elisabeth Labouret, an innkeeper's daughter, and Thomas-Alexandre Dumas. The elder Dumas enjoyed a brilliant career as a general in the armies of the First Republic; but after repeatedly offending Napoleon Bonaparte with his outspoken criticism, he soon fell on hard times and, upon his death in 1806, left his family in dire financial circumstances. Dumas was subsequently raised by his mother in the town of Villers-Cotterets and educated at a local parochial school. He worked as a clerk as a young man, but his growing interest in the theater brought him to Paris in 1822, where he was encouraged by the famous actor Francois Joseph Talma.

      Early Life
Alexandre Dumas is usually designated père to distinguish him from his father and son of the same name. The son, known as fils, was also an important writer of drama and of fiction. Dumas’ father was an impoverished, disillusioned general in Napoleon’s Egyptian campaign. His prowess and exploits were models for the character Porthos and for many incidents in Dumas’ works. Dumas was born in the village of Villers-Cotterêts on July 24, 1802, the grandson of a Haitian slave.
      Life’s Work
Though Dumas had published fiction earlier and drama later, the real shift to fiction came in 1842, with the publication of his first great historical novel, Le Chevalier d’Harmental (1842; English translation, 1856). The following years saw the publication of his most popular, though not regarded as his best, novels, Les Trois Mousquetaires (1844; The Three Musketeers, 1846), Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (1844-1845; The Count of Monte-Cristo, 1846), and La Tulipe Noire (1850; The Black Tulip, 1851).
