His father, a self-made man and a general under Napoleon, died in 1806, leaving Alexandre to be raised by his mother in a small town outside Paris. In 1823 he left for the big city to make a name for himself as a playwright. While working as a clerk, he first tried his hand at low comedy and farce but found his true calling after seeing a performance of Shakespeare. Dumas's first major success was the 1829 play "Henry III and His Court." Many feel that it inaugurated the era of the Romantic theater, a rebellion against the stodgy, passionless, formulaic Classicism that had hitherto ruled the literary scene. A year later, Dumas' contemporary, Victor Hugo, added his own powerful voice to the Romantic theater, with "Hernani." Always a staunch republican and opposed to any form of monarchy or dictatorship, Dumas threw himself into the July Revolution of 1830 that overthrew the restored Bourbon monarchy. Though he had never before served in the military, he managed, with a few students, to take and hold a powder magazine against fierce opposition.
