The Three Musketeers

Alexandre Dumas (1802-1870)
As a playwright Dumas made his breakthrough with HENRI III ET SA COUR (1829), produced by the Comedie Francaise. It gained a huge success and Dumas went on to write additional plays, of which LA TOUR DE NESLE (1832, The Tower of Nesle) is considered the greatest masterpiece of French melodrama. He wrote constantly, producing a steady stream of plays, novels, and short stories.
Dumas' role in the development of the historical novel owes much to a coincidence. The lifting of press censorship in the 1830s gave rise to a rapid spread of newspapers. Editors began to lure readers by entertaining serial novels. Everybody read them, the aristocracy, and the bourgeoisie, young and old, men and women. Dumas' first true serial novel was LE CAPITAINE PAUL (1838, Captain Paul), a quick rewrite of a play.

In 1786, Thomas-Alexandre joined the French army, but to protect the aristocratic family's reputation, he enlisted using his mother's maiden name. Following the Revolution in France, the Marquis lost his estates but his mulatto son, Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, distinguished himself as a capable and daring soldier in Napoleon Bonaparte 's army, rising through the ranks to become a General by the age of 31.

In 1855 the two men dreamed of writing a play together, but ultimately they collaborated only on this portrait, made in November of that year. Seated casually, hands folded comfortably on his cane, Dumas addressed Nadar with a direct and lively expression. The portrait reflects Nadar's ability to evoke a sitter's natural personality. His father, a self-made man and a general under Napoleon, died in 1806, leaving Alexandre to be raised by his mother in a small town outside Paris. In 1823 he left for the big city to make a name for himself as a playwright. While working as a clerk, he first tried his hand at low comedy and farce but found his true calling after seeing a performance of Shakespeare. Dumas's first major success was the 1829 play "Henry III and His Court." Many feel that it inaugurated the era of the Romantic theater, a rebellion against the stodgy, passionless, formulaic Classicism that had hitherto ruled the literary scene. A year later, Dumas' contemporary, Victor Hugo, added his own powerful voice to the Romantic theater, with "Hernani." Always a staunch republican and opposed to any form of monarchy or dictatorship, Dumas threw himself into the July Revolution of 1830 that overthrew the restored Bourbon monarchy. Though he had never before served in the military, he managed, with a few students, to take and hold a powder magazine against fierce opposition.
