W.E.B.Du Bois,(1868-1963),was one of the foremost, early leaders in the struggle for racial equality in the United States. He was a scholar, an activist, a co-founder of the Niagara Movement and the NAACP, and the crusading editor of The Crisis .From his home in Massachusetts, his first educational journey away from New England took him to Fisk University in Nashville. For the first time,he experienced the South, where he observed many achievements of the Reconstruction period disappearing. After graduation,he received a scholarship to Harvard University where his efforts were rewarded with further study at the University of Berlin. It was there that he became a convert to the new science of sociology. Following his return to America,Du Bois produced the monumental Philadelphia Negro ,the first scientific study of urban blacks in America. As a social scientist, Du Bois used the objective method of his profession to challenge discriminatory ideologies and institutions and to advocate social change. Not always in agreement with his fellow activists about how to create the changes necessary to provide equality, Du Bois remained a strong advocate for high achievement and intellectual pursuits. This traveling exhibit, prepared by the W.E.B.Du Bois Library at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, contains documents culled from the extensive materials in the library ’s DuBois Collection (http://www.library.umass.edu/spcoll/dbpapers.html). It provides a biographical overview of Du Bois’life and deals with his intellectual achievements and the highlights of his career. The materials are largely photographs, but they include information on Du Bois’ life and work, along with graphics from the collection and facsimiles of significant documents.

As founder and editor of The Crisis , the flagship publication of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), W. E. B. Du Bois helped publicize the achievements of countless African-American writers and other intellectuals. Through The Crisis , which enjoyed a readership of nearly 100,000 at its peak, Du Bois advanced his conviction that literature and art could enhance the image of African Americans. According to Du Bois, an elite group of black leaders—his so-called "Talented Tenth"—would blaze a trail to a better life for those who came afterward. In 1896, Du Bois became the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

DuBOIS RIVER GARDEN DEDICATION Great Barrington-born William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) became one of the leading writers and civil rights activists of his generation. He taught at Wilberforce University, Atlanta University and University of Pennsylvania. He was founder and guiding force of The Crisis, the NAACP's journal, from 1910-1934. "From his student days at Fisk, Harvard and the University of Berlin to his editorship of the Encyclopedia Africana at age ninety, Du Bois produced a mountain of scholarship in sociology and history that stands as a monument for posterity," according to a brochure from the Du Bois Archives at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Du Bois often expressed his fondness for Great Barrington; his two children were born here and he often re-visited old haunts including the Burghardt homestead on Route 23 (now a National Historic Landmark) well into the 1950s. Ethel Nance-W.E.B. Du Bois Correspondence: Du Bois in Context
Anthony Bliss, Rare Book Librarian, Bancroft Library
One of the often overlooked shortcomings of collecting a famous person's papers is that most of the time a repository only receives one side of the correspondence. The letters that the "famous person" wrote were sent off to someone else, and that corpus of material is therefore scattered. Sometimes, famous people keep copies of outgoing letters, but it is rarely systematic. This little meditation comes up in the case of W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963), one of our major African American leaders. His long life and boundless energy brought him into contact with key figures from Booker T. Washington to the civil rights activists of the early 1960s. Most of the Du Bois papers are at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, but a significant group of his letters has recently turned up in San Francisco and come to Bancroft.

THE EDUCATION OF BLACK PEOPLE
New Edition by W.E.B. Du Bois edited by Herbert Aptheker Taken together, these ten essays cover half a century during which the social, political, and technological transformations were unparalleled by any in recorded history. And while Du Bois reflects these changes, certain constants persist: a demand for excellence, sacrifice, and a life of service; and an insistence that while such a life will bring hardships and temptations, it will also bring fulfillment. In Du Bois's view, only with such a life will one truly live. In this affirmation, there runs a particular feeling that the history of African Americans has profoundly influenced their ideas about service, of compassion, of justice. Though containing speeches written nearly one-hundred years ago, and on a subject that has seen more stormy debate and demagoguery than almost any other in recent history, The Education of Black People approaches education with a timelessness and timeliness, at once rooted in classical thought that reflects a remarkably fresh and contemporary relevance. A Biographical Sketch
    of
W.E.B. DuBois By Gerald C. Hynes Introduction

William Edward Burghardt DuBois, to his admirers, was by spirited devotion and scholarly dedication, an attacker of injustice and a defender of freedom. Labeled as a "radical," he was ignored by those who hoped that his massive contributions would be buried along side of him. But, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote, "history cannot ignore W.E.B. DuBois because history has to reflect truth and Dr. DuBois was a tireless explorer and a gifted discoverer of social truths. His singular greatness lay in his quest for truth about his own people. There were very few scholars who concerned themselves with honest study of the black man and he sought to fill this immense void. The degree to which he succeeded disclosed the great dimensions of the man." His Formative Years
W.E.B. DuBois was born on February 23, 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. At that time Great Barrington had perhaps 25, but not more than 50, Black people out of a population of about 5,000. Consequently, there were little signs of overt racism there. Nevertheless, its venom was distributed through a constant barrage of suggestive innuendoes and vindictive attitudes of its residents. This mutated the personality of young William from good natured and outgoing to sullen and withdrawn. This was later reinforced and strengthened by inner withdrawals in the face of real discriminations. His demeanor of introspection haunted him throughout his life.

Children learn more from what you are than what you teach.
    W.E.B. (William Edward Burghardt) Dubois
was born on February 23, 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. He was one of the most influential black leaders of the first half of the 20th Century. Dubois shared in the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, in 1909. He served as its director of research and editor of its magazine, "Crisis," until 1934. Dubois was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1896. Between 1897 and 1914 Dubois conducted numerous studies of black society in America, publishing 16 research papers. He began his investigations believing that social science could provide answers to race problems. Gradually he concluded that in a climate of virulent racism, social change could only be accomplished by agitation and protest. At the turn of the century Dubois had been a supporter of black capitalism. Throughout his career he moved steadily to the political left. By 1905 he had been drawn to socialist ideas and remained sympathetic to Marxism throughout his life. Dubois acted in support of integration and equal rights for everyone regardless of race, but his thinking often exhibited a degree of black separatist-nationalist tendencies. In 1961 Dubois became completely disillusioned with the United States. He moved to Ghana, joined the Communist Party, and a year later renounced his American Citizenship.
