W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963)
Born in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and educated at Fisk, Harvard, and the University of Berlin,
W. E. B. Du Bois was a teacher and writer. He began his career at Wilberforce College in Ohio, then a small, poor, black college, moving later to the University of Pennsylvania and, finally, to Atlanta University, where he devoted thirteen years to researching and writing sociological studies of African American life. As expressed in his influential work The Souls of Black Folk (1903), Du Bois's philosophy differed radically from that of Booker T. Washington, the founder of the Tuskegee Institute, who recommended, in his Atlanta Exposition Address (1895), that blacks settle for a lesser education and accept segregation in exchange for a tolerant attitude from whites. Du Bois joined the Niagara Movement in 1905 and worked aggressively toward achieving civil rights for African Americans. He moved to New York in 1910 and spent the next twenty-five years as editor of Crisis , the publication for the new organization, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Du Bois grew increasingly frustrated with the little progress African Americans were making and began to move toward Pan-African and socialist thought. He joined the Communist Party of the United States in 1961 and became a citizen of Ghana in 1963.

"Believe in life A l w a ys human beings will live and progress to greater , broader, and f u l l e r lives." ~ W.E.B. Du Bois African American writer and teacher William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) was born on this day in Great Barrington, Massachusetts , three years after the end of the American Civil War. He was the most influential black leader of the first half of the 20th century. "One ever feels his twoness—an American, a Negro; two souls , two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder," said Du Bois, who was his high school's valedictorian. Educated at Fisk, Harvard, and the University of Berlin, he was an advocate for education and equality. He published The Philadelphia Negro: A Social Study (1899), the first case study of a U.S. black community which used ethnography, history, and statistics. In his masterpiece The Souls of Black Folk (1903), he wrote, "The problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line." "Am I an American or am I a Negro?" he asked. "Can I be both?"

What most impressed me about this very detailed biography was the complete treatment that was given to Du Bois' Communist connections. With the end the the Cold War we have learned conclusively that the Communist Party USA was not the possibly misguided, but good-hearted progressive folks of conventional wisdom. Instead, the CPUSA was a conscious and dedicated tool of Soviet foreign policy. No one can doubt that Du Bois was a brillant scholar and a careful researcher, at least in his early wor...

DuBois's book The Souls of Black Folks, is his sociological study of African Americans. The book was printed in 28 editions and translated broadly. Along with Dr. Alain Locke, Du Bois urged African-American artists in the 1920s to create from the experiences of African-American folk life and to celebrate their ancient African cultural heritage. The cover illustration shown on The Crisis: A Record of the Darker Races, was done by Aaron Douglas. Douglas was an artist who followed DuBois' and Locke's doctrine. His works frequently adorned the covers of literary works of the Harlem Renaissance period. DuBois organized the first four Pan-African congresses, and was special minister and envoy at the inauguration of the President of Liberia. He taught at Wilberforce and Atlanta Universities and edited several publications which were significant contributions to the field of social sciences. Outspoken on many issues, he was considered the Father of Pan Africanism and he urged the British to "give the rights of responsible government" to the black colonies of Africa and the West Indies. One of his most famous and prophetic quotes is that "the problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line." DuBois became a resident of Ghana at the invitation of President Kwame Nkrumah. He died there in 1963 at the age of 95.
