John Dryden was the most influential man of literature in the second half of 17th-century England.
His works were very diverse; he wrote 30 plays, including operas and a masque, poetry as well as translations from Latin, including a translation of The Works of Virgil
His works were always very topical - he became Poet Laureate but, refusing to denounce his Catholic faith when the Protestant King William III ascended to the throne, later lost this position.

John Dryden
Dryden was educated first at Westminster School and then at Trinity College, Cambridge. His first poetic works were written upon occasions of national importance. In 1663 he married Lady Elizabeth Howard and some years later, in 1668, was made poet laureate and royal historiographer, posts that he held until 1688.
During this period Dryden wrote a number of critical essays - including A Defence of an Essay (1668), the Preface to An Evening's Love (1671), Of Heroick Plays (1672) and the Preface to Troilus and Cressida (1679) - and three plays in which are marked the effects, upon Dryden, of the constitutional crisis of the 1670's: The Duke of Guise (1679), Mr Limberham (1679) and The Spanish Fryar (1681).
In the early 1680's Dryden became a Catholic and then wrote the religious work The Hind and the Panther (1687). In 1688 he lost both of his royal offices and returned to writing both for the theatre and critical pieces. The notable plays from this late period are Don Sebastion (1689), Amphitryon (1690) and Cleomenes (1692). The criticism includes the Preface to the Sylvae (1685) and A Discourse Concerning the Original and Progress of Satire (1693).
Dryden also worked, during this period on a large number of translations of, among others, Theocritus, Horace, Homer, Lucretius, Boccaccio, Chaucer, Ovid and Persius. In 1700 Dryden was buried in Westminster Abbey.

A Tercentenary Conference
To be held at:
Burwalls Centre for Continuing Education, University of Bristol,
Leigh Woods, Bristol, U.K.
Friday 7 July - Sunday 9 July, 2000
The year 2000 marks the tercentenary of the death of John Dryden. This conference, sponsored by the Departments of English and Classics and the Centre for the Classical Tradition, should prove the most important academic colloquium to mark the occasion. Many of the world's leading Dryden scholars will be present. There will be plenary lectures by an eminent literary critic, a leading Dryden scholar (joint editor of the new Longman Dryden), and a major poet who has shown interest in Dryden's translations. In addition there will be numerous papers by both scholars of English literature and classicists, and a final round-table discussion. Dryden is arguably England's greatest poet-translator and had a lifelong engagement with classical antiquity. Accordingly the conference will concentrate on issues of translation, reception, intertextuality, and classicism. Speakers will also consider the relationship between Dryden's classicism and his activities as a political and religious poet. The conference (both sessions and accommodation) will be held in Burwalls, an attractive Victorian mansion with extensive gardens, situated near the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge and with panoramic views over Bristol. In addition to the lectures there will be a wine reception, and a concert in which the professional counter-tenor Nicholas Clapton will sing Dryden song-settings by Purcell and others (both events are included in the conference fee). Conference registration at Burwalls from 3.00pm on Friday 7th July. Early booking is advised; maps and further details will be sent with tickets.
