John Dryden
John Dryden, an English poet and dramatist who would dominate literary efforts of The Restoration, was born on August 19, 1631, in Aldwinkle, Northamptonshire, England. He received a classical education at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, then moved to London in 1657 to commence his career as a professional writer. His first play, The Wild Gallant (1663), was a failure when first presented, but Dryden soon found more success with The Indian Queen (1664) which he co-authored with Sir Robert Howard and which served as his initial attempt to found a new theatrical genre, the heroic tragedy. Although George Villiers' The Rehearsal , a vicious satire of heroic tragedy, brought a quick end to the form, Dryden still managed to produce a number of successful works in this genre including The Indian Emperor (1665) and Secret Love (1667) which mixed heroic tragedy with contemporary comedy. The young playwright's reputation grew quickly, and in 1668, only ten years after his move to London, Dryden was appointed Poet Laureate of England. (He was later stripped of the title because of religious differences when William and Mary came into power.) That same year, he agreed to write exclusively for Thomas Killigrew's theatrical company and became a shareholder. Both his first offering

Dryden, John
John Dryden (1631-1700) carried out a significant critical project, the understanding of which has generally remained within the lines laid down in Samuel Johnson 's essay, which divided Dryden's work into the "general or [the] occasional," identified as the necessary and true as opposed to the contingent and corrupt. "In his general precepts, which depend upon the nature of things, and the structure of the human mind, he may doubtless be safely recommended to the confidence of the reader; but his occasional and particular positions were sometimes interested, sometimes negligent, and sometimes capricious" (Johnson, Lives 1:227). Attention being directed to the codification of Dryden's opinion within the terms of this opposition, critical discourse on Dryden has consisted largely in separating Dryden's principles from his own contingent failures to adhere to those principles.
The thematic elements of Dryden's criticismancients versus moderns, French neoclassicism versus English practice, rhyme versus blank verse, lexical usage versus prescription, probability versus poetic justice, universal value versus the spirit of the age, and so onhave been codified concisely by W. K. Wimsatt and Cleanth Brooks ( Literary Criticism 196-217) and painstakingly by Robert Hume (Dryden's Criticism) delight of form) around a notion of correspondence that is organic rather than formal. His negotiation with the neoclassical terms of

He came of a Puritan family, which had been for years very active in the political world. Dryden was sent to school at Westminster. He published some verses at the age of eighteen. In 1650 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, and took a degree of B.A. four years later, but it is probable that he spent also the next three years at Cambridge. He went to London in 1657. His first important literary effort, Heroic Stanzas to the memory of Cromwell, was published in 1659. This was followed the next year by verses on the return of Charles. In order to add to his slender income, he turned to the stage, and after two unsuccessful attempts he produced his first play, The Wild Gallant , in 1663. This comedy was not well received, and Dryden confesses that his forte was not comedy. The same year he produced
