Oh, Boy, Another Book on My Pillow
We were out at dinner one night with friends, Jim and Jo, whose marriage had been rocky for some time. They asked what we were doing, and we told them the concept of this book. Jim said, "Oh, boy, another book I'm going to find on my pillow." I told Jim it wasn't going to work like that. In the book those chapters that speak loudest to men would have an * (asterisk) beside them. Men can get into the book and cut right to the chase. If they like what they read, they will read on. Actually, many women who read books on how to improve their marriages and relationships and who attend seminars or hear a good church sermon, think, If only my partner could read or understand this information, our lives would be better . It's like the lyrics in the old Cole Porter song, "When are the bells going to chime, when is the poem going to rhyme?" Most men hate this. When I made that statement at a speaking engagement, one of the women asked, "Well, if they don't like this, then what do they want?" A quick look at the men's survey shows the most listed areas that make men feel that they were special and loved. They were: being accepted for who they were and not having to change, and being supported in whatever venture, hobby or career they are involved in. Many men feel that women marry men hoping to change them, whereas men marry women hoping they won't. "Women buy seven out of every ten books sold. That's known. But it's also known that women, ever hopeful, buy a lot of books for men." The Grab Bag.

Quotes I like (in alphabetical order): Some people write and say to me, "You know you were a genius, You were absolutely brilliant!" I was neither of those things. Had I been brilliant, had I been a genius, I would have not found the necessity to break the law to achieve my goals.
~Frank Abagnale Action springs not from thought, but from a readiness for responsibility.
~Dietrich Bonhoeffer Instead of allowing yourself to be unhappy, just let your love grow as God wants it to grow. Seek goodness in others. Love more persons more love them more impersonally, more unselfishly, without thought of return. The return, never fear, will take care of itself.
~ Henry Drummond (1851-1897) The early Christians were not called Christians because they were pious folk who lived morally superior lives with a condescending attitude toward their fellow man. They were called Christians (Christ-like ones) because they imitated their leader, Christ. They lived lives of compassion, love, humility, patience and virtue.

Christ's Legacy to the Church
by
Evangelist Thomas Cook
Chapter 16 of the book
New Testament Holiness
M atthew Henry “My peace I give unto you.” [ John 14:27 ] Elsewhere this peace is described as the peace of God, [ Philippians 4:7 Colossians 3:15 ] because He is its source and origin. It is the peace which Christ had with the Father from the beginning, the peace in the heart of the Eternal, the stillness of eternity entering the spirit, causing a waveless, breathless calm. It lies not in the emotions, nor in the absence of the emotions. It is a peace not springing up in the course of nature, but handed down from heaven, and implanted in the believing soul. Nothing for a moment broke the serenity of Christ’s life on earth. Tempest and tumult met Him everywhere, until outwardly His life was one of the most troubled that was ever lived. But the inner life was a sea of glass. The highest tranquility, serenity, and peace of mind were always there. It was at the very time when the bloodhounds were dogging Him in the streets of Jerusalem, that He turned to His disciples and offered them, as a last legacy, “My peace.” If the meagreness of human language fails to convey to a blind man the vastness of that ocean which lies in the hollow of the Creator’s hand, how much more is its poverty seen when it attempts to set forth, in an inexperienced soul, all that is meant by God’s perfect peace.

A Living Sacrifice
by
Evangelist Thomas Cook
Chapter 12 of the book
New Testament Holiness
T there were two kinds of sacrifice Romans 12:1 Exodus 29:20 Leviticus 8:23-24 phrases it, were thus claimed for God. The ear was marked first as if to show that before using the hand or the foot we must listen for the Divine Voice and only use them as God commands, being deaf to all other voices that would call us in other directions. It is indeed a solemn day in our history when we recognise to the full the claims of God, and bring not only our souls to Him for salvation, but our bodies for sanctification and service. 1 Corinthians 10:31 Exodus 28:36-38 Zechariah 14:20-21 ] and the shop-girl behind the counter may offer as acceptable an offering to God as the priest by the altar. That is the true sacrifice when we think as in His sight, and will, and love, and act always in obedience to Him.

    Sunday Thought
As memory scans the past, above and beyond all the transitory pleasures of life, there leap forward those supreme hours when you have been enabled to do unnoticed kindnesses to those around about you, things too trifling to speak about, but which you feel have entered into your eternal life. I have seen almost all the beautiful things that God has made; I have enjoyed almost every pleasure that He has planned for man; and yet as I look back I see standing out above all the life that has gone four or five short experiences when the love of God reflected itself in some poor imitation, some small act of love of mine, and these seem to be the things which alone of all one's life abide. Everything else in all our lives is transitory. Every other good is visionary. But the acts of love which no man knows about, or can ever know about - they never fail. In the Book of Matthew, where the Judgement Day is depicted for us in the imagery of One seated upon a throne and dividing the sheep from the goats, the test of a man then is not, "How have I believed?" but "How have I loved?"...I say the final test of religion at that great Day is not religiousness, but Love; not what I have done, not what I have believed, not what I have achieved, but how I have discharged the common charities of life. Sins of commission in that awful indictment are not even referred to. By what we have not done, by sins of omission, we are judged. It could not be otherwise. For the withholding of love is the negation of the spirit of Christ, the proof that we never knew Him, that for us He lived in vain. It means that He suggested nothing in all our thoughts, that He inspired nothing in all our lives, that we were not once near enough to Him to be seized with the spell of His compassion for the world. It means that:
