Web-Propagated Misinformation About Dreiser
The web, of course, can be a good place for propagating misinformation, and Dreiser is no exception. Below are excerpts from sites with erroneous or misleading statements about Dreiser. “About Theodore Dreiser.” Salon Classics Book Group. http://www.salon.com/promo/1997/10/13classic_dreiser.html With editing help from Henry and “Jug,” Dreiser wrote what is now considered one of his finest novels, Sister Carrie. Frank Doubleday, the publisher, objected to the novel's immorality the tale of a young woman in a big city who succeeds despite, or even because of, her immorality. To fulfill his contact [sic] he agreed to publish Dreiser's work, but refused to promote the book. Charges of obscenity soon followed, making Dreiser a cause célèbre for many young writers. COMMENT: This is an oversimplification and misrepresentation of what really happened with the publication of Sister Carrie , and it conflates facts about the reaction to Sister Carrie with the charges of obscenity that followed the publication of The “Genius.”

Theodore Dreiser
Biography Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Theodore Dreiser grew up in a poor family with an emotionally distant and morally rigid father. Dreiser supported himself from the age of fifteen, spending one year at Indiana University before obtaining a job as a reporter with the Chicago Globe . He read the works of late-nineteenth-century scientists and social scientists such as Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley who agreed that human evolution was based upon the principle of the "survival of the fittest." Fascinated by human destinies and motives, Dreiser addressed the tension between determinism and human compassion in his fiction. In the early 1900s, Dreiser suffered a nervous breakdown but rallied to become an editor and, later, editorial director of the Butterick Publishing Company. His novels include Sister Carrie Jennie Gerhardt (1911), and An American Tragedy Explorations Though Dreiser's reputation is sustained chiefly by long novels, short, compressed tales such as Old Rogaum and His Theresa (1918) can show us the complex textures and motives of literary naturalism in bold relief. The Genius was published in 1915 and ten years later came An American Tragedy (1925), based on a real-life murder case, which, despite reservations about its author's leaden prose, has survived as a classic. A large, egocentric man with an excessive sexual appetite, his work in the last decades of life was unremarkable and his reputation was sullied by his jealousy of Sinclair Lewis's receipt of the Nobel prize for literature in 1930 and by his alleged plagiarism of a book on Russia by Dorothy Thompson, Lewis's wife.

Theodore Dreiser grew up in a large, poor family in Terre Haute, Indiana. Several of his brothers and sisters would later rescue Dreiser at low points in his career - two of his protagonists were based on sisters, and his brother, Paul, sent Dreiser to a resort when he was broke. A high school teacher paid to send him to Indiana University for one year, but Dreiser did not fit in, and he left college to become a reporter. Newspapering took him to Chicago, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and New York City, where he gathered his first observations of the American cities that would play large roles in his upcoming novels. Dreiser's novels are prime examples of literary naturalism, with characters driven by selfish motives and influenced by the privileges and limitations of social class. He was often criticized for telling amoral tales that could outrage readers or convince them that bad decisions would be rewarded. Among his most significant influences are Herbert Spencer and Honore de Balzac. Dreiser was a finalist for the Nobel Prize in 1930; when Sinclair Lewis won, he acknowledged Dreiser in his speech.

Dreiser distributed it himself, but it was consistently attacked as immoral; it was reissued in 1982 with many passages from his revised typescript restored. Jennie Gerhardt (1911), again about a "fallen woman," met with a better response; its success allowed Dreiser to work as a writer full time. With these two works, Dreiser started his long battle for the right of the novelist to portray life as he sees it. In The Financier (1912), he turned his attention more specifically to American social and economic institutions. This novel, the first of a trilogy that includes The Titan (1914) and The Stoic (1947), describes the rise to power of a ruthless industrialist. In both
