An American Tragedy
Modern Library Top 100 Novels of the 20th Century (16)
Author Info: Theodore Dreiser
It is an open secret that even critics who admire Dreiser, consider him to be a horrible writer technically. American Tragedy has been called "the worst-written great novel in the world" and the otherwise loathsome Garrison Keillor has an amusing column about how bad he finds Sister Carrie on rereading it. His books have all the literary grace of the phone book. Thus, his reputation rests solely on the agreement of Left wing critics with his hatred of American capitalism. Well, 100 years on, I think we can safely say that the American system has served us pretty well and the Sister Carrie's of the world are not simply insignificant but, worse for a writer, uninteresting.

    Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945)
Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, Theodore Dreiser grew up in a poor family with an emotionally distant and morally rigid father. Dreiser supported himself from the age of fifteen, spending one year at Indiana University before obtaining a job as a reporter with the Chicago Globe . He read the works of late-nineteenth-century scientists and social scientists such as Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley who agreed that human evolution was based upon the principle of the "survival of the fittest." Fascinated by human destinies and motives, Dreiser addressed the tension between determinism and human compassion in his fiction. In the early 1900s, Dreiser suffered a nervous breakdown but rallied to become an editor and, later, editorial director of the Butterick Publishing Company. His novels include Sister Carrie Jennie Gerhardt (1911), and

Dreiser’s father was frequently in debt due to failed business ventures, and it was this poor economic and social standing that affected Dreiser’s status as “the foremost creator of those ‘hopeless unfortunates’ [stories]” (Vanausdall 57). Dreiser is associated with the naturalist movement in American literature, described by Jeanette Vanausdall as "a logical product of the growing complexity of American society, which, naturalists believed, rendered the individual powerless and isolated. As a literary school, naturalism was a product of an immigrant, industrial, and urban society" (

    Theodore Dreiser
    Biography
Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945), best known for his novels Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925), was born in Terre Haute, Indiana. His parents were German immigrants whose marriage resulted in thirteen children. Because his father was often ill and unemployed, the family struggled against poverty throughout Dreiser's childhood. In rebellion against his father's obsessive religiosity, Dreiser left home at fifteen for Chicago. There, after three years of menial jobs, he found work as a newspaper reporter. While Dreiser churned out hackwork for various periodicals, he was reading the deterministic philosophy of Herbert Spencer and the novels of Honore de Balzac, who believed in the evolutionary doctrine that life is a struggle in which instinctive human desires are often in conflict with conventional morality.
In 1900 Dreiser published his first book, Sister Carrie, now regarded as a classic naturalistic novel, challenging the American myth that honesty and hard work inevitably lead to success. Dreiser's compassion toward his desperate fictional characters was less important to the early readers of his novel than the alleged immorality of his book. Sales were poor, but he followed the novel with several other long works of fiction before publishing his first collection of stories in 1918, Free and Other Stories.
Dreiser published a second story collection, Chains: Lesser Novels and Stories, in 1927. Many of these stories dramatized the same theme he had explored in Free and Other Stories—love as the most powerful force in life. Two years after Dreiser's death from a heart attack, the novelist Howard Fast edited The Best Short Stories of Theodore Dreiser (1947).

THEY lived together in a part of the country which was not so prosperous as it had once been, about three miles from one of those small towns that, instead of increasing in population, is steadily decreasing. The territory was not very thickly settled; perhaps a house every other mile or so, with large areas of corn- and wheat-land and fallow fields that at odd seasons had been sown to timothy and clover. Their particular house was part log and part frame, the log portion being the old original home of Henry's grandfather. The new portion, of now rain- beaten, time-worn slabs, through which the wind squeaked in the chinks at times, and which several overshadowing elms and a butternut-tree made picturesque and reminiscently pathetic, but a little damp, was erected by Henry when he was twenty-one and just married. The orchard to the east of the house was full of gnarled old apple-trees, worm-eaten as to trunks and branches, and fully ornamented with green and white lichens, so that it had a sad, greenish-white, silvery effect in moonlight. The low outhouses, which had once housed chickens, a horse or two, a cow, and several pigs, were covered with patches of moss as their roof, and the sides had been free of paint for so long that they, were blackish gray as to color, and a little spongy. The picket-fence in front, with its gate squeaky and askew, and the side fences of the stake-and-rider type were in an equally run-down condition. As a matter of fact, they had aged synchronously with the persons who lived here, old Henry Reifsneider and his wife Phoebe Ann.

"You ought to keep that outer door locked, Rogaum," he observed to the phlegmatic butcher the next evening, as he was passing, "people might get in. A couple o' kids was sleepin' in there last night." "Ach, dot iss no difference," answered Rogaum pleasantly. "I haf der inner door locked, yet. Let dem sleep. Dot iss no difference." "Better lock it" said the officer, more to vindicate his authority than anything else. "Something will happen there yet" The door was never locked, however, and now of a summer evening Mrs. Rogaum and the children made pleasant use of its recess, watching the rout of street cars and occasionally belated trucks go by. The children played on the sidewalk, all except the budding Theresa (eighteen just turning), who, with one companion of the neighborhood, the pretty Kenrihan girl, walked up and down the block, laughing, glancing, watching the boys. Old Mrs. Kenrihan lived in the next block, and there, sometimes, the two stopped. There, also, they most frequently pretended to be when talking with the boys in the intervening side street. Young "Connie" Almerting and George Goujon were the bright particular mashers who held the attention of the maidens on this block. These two made their acquaintance in the customary bold, boyish way, and thereafter the girls had an urgent desire to be out in the street together after eight, and to linger where the boys could see and overtake them.
