NY: The Library of America, 1987 Achievement Considered by many as the leader of Naturalism in American writing, Dreiser is also remembered for his stinging criticism of the genteel tradition and of what Howells described as the "smiling aspects of life" typifying America. In his fiction, Dreiser deals with social problems and with characters who struggle to survive. His sympathetic treatment of a "morally loose" woman in Sister Carrie was called immoral and he suffered at the hands of publishers. One of Dreiser's favorite fictional devices was the use of contrast between the rich and the poor, the urbane and the unsophisticated, and the power brokers and the helpless. While he wrote about "raw" experiences of life in his earlier works, in his later writing he considered the impact of economic society on the lives of people in the remarkable trilogy -

Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945) American author, outstanding representative of naturalism, whose novels depict real-life subjects in a harsh light. Dreiser's novels were held to be amoral, and he battled throughout his career against censorship and popular taste. This started with SISTER CARRIE (1900). It was not until 1981 that the work was published in its original form. Dreiser's principal concern was with the conflict between human needs and the demands of society for material success. "A woman should some day write the complete philosophy of clothes. No matter how young, it is one of the things she wholly comprehends. There is an indescribably faint line in the matter of man's apparel which somehow divides for her those who are worth glancing at and those who are not. Once an individual has passed this faint line on the way downward he will get no glance from her. There is another line at which the dress of a man will cause her to study her own." (from Sister Carrie Theodore Dreiser was born in Sullivan, Indiana, the ninth of ten children. His parents were poor. In the 1860s his father, a devout Catholic German immigrant, had attempted to establish his own woolen mill, but after it was destroyed in a fire, the family lived in poverty. Dreiser's schooling was erratic, as the family moved from town to town. He left home when he was 16 and worked at whatever jobs he could find. With the help of his former teacher, he was able to spend the year 1889-1890 at Indiana University. Dreiser left after only a year. He was, however, a voracious reader, and the impact of such writers as Hawthorne, Poe, Balzac, Herbert Spencer, and Freud influenced his thought and his reaction against organized religion.

    Dreiser, Theodore (1871-1945)
Is it necessary to introduce the author of Sister Carrie Jennie Gerhardt (1911) and An American Tragedy (1925)? Theodore Dreiser is one of the great American writers of the 20th century. He was born in Indiana, in a poor family of German origin and had to work early as a journalist and reporter. In all his work, he drew realistic portraits of the conditions of living in the USA at that time.
His friendship with John Cowper, started in 1915 and lasted until his death. While John Cowper was in America they saw a lot of each other. John Cowper had the greatest admiration for Dreiser and the two men understood each other. He wrote a long piece on Dreiser for The Dial

Well, this excellent fellow has been discovered by us and has become extraordinarily friendly. He lives in West 10th Street quite close, with a girl who is either his wife or his tart, I know not which. He has the most charming disposition and in appearance resembles Goldsmith or Dr Johnson without their wig. He is nobly and generously ugly, a massive rugged seamed and scarr'd Balzacian type. He talks humorously and dogmatically with quaint American expressions and a sort of genial aplomb....He has that curiously earthy-innocent amorousness and humorous friendliness...He is also, which is rare over here, a real 'gentleman', in his feeling and tact. He has reservation and a sort of generous dignity, which is very pleasing; and he enjoys everything that happens in true terrace-walk fashion. His books have often been suppressed by publishers...(John Cowper Powys

The Rise of Realism: 1860-1914: Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945)
Index The 1925 work An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser, like London's Martin Eden Despite his awkward style, Dreiser, in An American Tragedy, displays crushing authority. Its precise details build up an overwhelming sense of tragic inevitability. The novel is a scathing portrait of the American success myth gone sour, but it is also a universal story about the stresses of urbanization, modernization, and alienation. Within it roam the romantic and dangerous fantasies of the dispossessed. An American Tragedy is a reflection of the dissatisfaction, envy, and despair that afflicted many poor and working people in America's competitive, success-driven society. As American industrial power soared, the glittering lives of the wealthy in newspapers and photographs sharply contrasted with the drab lives of ordinary farmers and city workers. The media fanned rising expectations and unreasonable desires. Such problems, common to modernizing nations, gave rise to muckraking journalism penetrating investigative reporting that documented social problems and provided an important impetus to social reform. Dreiser's style is unconventional. If students have heard of him, they've heard that he's a clumsy stylist. They also will have difficulty understanding Ida's dilemma in "Typhoon." The instructor should explain that Dreiser was trained as a journalist whose main duty was to record the who, what, where, when, why, and how of a story. Graceful style was a small concern. In fact, some of Dreiser's verbal clumsiness was more or less deliberate. His writing possesses its particular power, its ability to move the emotions, in part because of its bluntness, its lack of grace. Try to imagine "Typhoon" told by a facile stylist, for example, by F. Scott Fitzgerald . It would lose much of its voltage. It's a good idea to show students how thoroughly trapped and damned Ida Zobel is by an illicit pregnancy. Children of the 1990s will likely try to foist their own standards back onto her time and place. Students identify with this story because they feel much peer pressure in matters of sex. Ask them to try to argue sympathetically for Hauptfuhrer. Can it be done? Where did Dreiser's sympathies lie? Another good theme to discuss is Ida's being "forgiven" by the public, her almost automatic innocence before the court, and her adoption by the wealthy socialite. Dreiser is indicating some things here about the influence of the fourth estate over the administration of justice. We sympathize with Ida, of course, but her exoneration for the killing is suspect. Certainly she still feels great guilt; it is the major motivation for her suicide.

, author. Dreiser was the foremost American literary naturalist and author of two of the most significant works of early-twentieth-century American fiction, Sister Carrie (1900) and An American Tragedy (1925). He was raised in a large and poor Catholic family (his father was German-born) in various Indiana towns. After arriving in Chicago in his teens, he worked at menial jobs ranging from stock clerk to laundry truck driver until he broke into newspaper reporting in 1892. After almost a decade of successful work as a reporter in St. Louis and Pittsburgh, as an editor of the New York magazine Ev'ry Month, and as a free-lance magazine writer in New York, Dreiser in late 1899 began his first novel, Sister Carrie. Set in Chicago and New York, the work is remarkable for its amoral yet sympathetic portrayal of the role of female sexuality in the rise of its heroine and for its rendering of the complex union of chance, character, and place in the fall of its male protagonist, Hurstwood. Although Sister Carrie was published, its publisher failed to promote the work because of its contents—an incident that Dreiser and such later supporters as H. L. Mencken made infamous as an example of the power of puritanical ideas in America.

By 1899 Dreiser had become a successful free-lance writer in New York City and had married. At the urging of his friend Arthur Henry, he undertook a novel and based it on the experiences of one of his sisters. That novel became Sister Carrie (1900), a landmark in American naturalistic fiction. Difficulties with his publisher over the novel, together with marital problems and other tensions, caused Dreiser to suffer a nervous breakdown in 1902. With the aid of his brother Paul he recovered and re-entered the world of journalism early in 1904 but attempted no significant new writing for almost seven years—though he did have Sister Carrie successfully reissued in 1907. After he lost a lucrative position with the Butterick Publishing Company in 1910, Dreiser completed and published Jennie Gerhardt (1911). That book, with
