Arthur Conan Doyle 1859-1930 Scottish Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh to Irish parents who had emigrated to Scotland. His mother's tales of the exploits of illustrious Irish forebears developed Doyle's adventurous and romantic nature. He always defended the underdog and used Holmes-like skill to help men who had been convicted of crimes on questionable evidence. In 1906, he established the innocence of a half-Indian law student, George Edalji, who was serving seven years for maiming horses, and in the late 1920s he cleared a German Jew named Oscar Slater of robbery and homicide charges. Doyle attended the University of Edinburgh and in 1885 became a doctor of medicine. During his school days he sold his first story, "The Mystery of Sassassa Valley" to Chambers Journal. He also met Dr. Joseph Bell, whose skill at diagnosis and deduction from minute physical clues were appropriated for Sherlock Holmes He made two trips as a ship's surgeon, one to the Arctic and one to Africa, gaining background for adventure stories to follow. When he returned he opened an oculist's practice in Portsmouth in 1882 but eye specialists were not in great demand and he spent his free time writing. His first detective story, "A Study in Scarlet", was sold in 1887 to Beeton's Christmas Annual.

Doyle was mainly brought up in Jesuit boarding schools, and entered the University of Edinburgh in 1881, receiving a medical degree in 1885. One of his professors, Dr. Joseph Bell, was to serve as a model for Sherlock Holmes. He began writing while still in school in order to earn money, and sold his first story ("The Mystery of the Sasassa Valley") to Chambers' Journal in 1879. Later that year his father fell ill and entered a convalescent home, and Arthur became the head of the family, assuming its financial burdens. To earn money, he spent some months as ship's doctor on two vessels, and eventually opened a medical practice in Southsea, Portsmouth. Like Dr. Watson's, his practice was "never very absorbing", at least at first, and he began writing novels in his spare time. His third try was A Study in Scarlet , the first Sherlock Holmes story, published in 1887 as the annual Christmas novel of Mrs. Beeton's

Arthur Conan Doyle
Scottish born and raised, Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle will be best remembered for his creation of that detective extraordinaire, Sherlock Holmes. In order to supplement his meagre earnings as a medical practitioner, he turned to writing. Doyle’s first piece appeared in ‘Chambers Journal’ while his first book was serialized. This series on the detective escapades of Sherlock Holmes and his faithful side-kick, Dr. Watson, (The Sign of Four 1890; The Hound of Baskervilles 1902) captured his readers imagination so much that when Doyle tried to kill of Holmes, he had to revive him in a follow up story. He earned a knighthood in 1902 for his pamphlet ‘The War in South Africa’ - he served as a physician in the 2 nd Boer War. He also wrote on spiritualism and historical romances ‘Micah Clarke’ (1887). To Sherlock Holmes she is always the woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise, but admirably balanced mind.
