Doyle, Arthur Conan Biography
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) British writer, creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of sharp reasoning. Doyle himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. 'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'
'I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts...'

(from 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 1891) Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools. During this period Doyle lost his belief in the Roman Catholic faith but the training of the Jesuits influenced deeply his mental development. Later he used his friends and teachers from Stonyhurst College as models for his characters in the Holmes stories, among them two boys named Moriarty. He studied at Edinburgh University and in 1884 he married Louise Hawkins. Doyle qualified as doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine as an eye specialist at Southsea near Porsmouth in Hampshire until 1891 when he became a full time writer. Doyle had produced his first story, an illustrated tale of a man and a tiger, at the age of six. Doyle's first story about Holmes, A STUDY IN SCARLET, was published in 1887 in

ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE
English author (1859-1930)
Biography:
Arthur Conan Doyle is the father of one of the most famous characters in English literature: Sherlock Holmes. A part from writing, he worked as doctor and later he joint the British Army.
He was born in Edimburgh. His family was catholic, of Norwegian origin, and thus he was sent to study to Jesuit schools. He began studying medecin but at the same time, he wrote short stories and articles. His Study in Scarlet first appeared in 1887, being a great success, and this was the birth of Sherlock Holmes. The adventures of this particular detective were subsequently published in Strand Magazine in 1891.
In November 1891 he wrote to his mother: "I think of slaying Holmes... and winding him up for good and all. He takes my mind from better things" and thus he writes about the "fatal" struggle between Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty. The Final Problem , the adventure which was to bring the news of Holmes's death to all readers, appeared in The Strand in December 1893.

Sir Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930)
Famous as the author of Sherlock Holmes , Conan Doyle's career was nonetheless varied: he worked on board an Arctic whaler as a doctor, was a war correspondent in Egypt, and even stood, unsuccessfully, for Parliament. He was also an active spiritualist, and lectured on the subject in Australia, America, Canada and South Africa. Other interests included sport, photography and politics, and he was an early advocate of a channel tunnel. Conan Doyle trained as a medical doctor, gaining his degree from Edinburgh University in 1881. His career took him around the world, bringing him into contact with exotic cultures and beliefs - some of which he wove into the characters in his novels. Sherlock Holmes made his first appearance in 'A Study of Scarlet', published in Beeton's Christmas Annual Micah Clarke was published to critical acclaim. Doyle added to this success with a series of Holmes stories for The Strand Magazine in 1891. Although his stories were popular, Conan Doyle felt that he had yet to make a lasting name in English literature, and he referred to Holmes as taking his mind 'from better things'.

(from 'A Scandal in Bohemia', 1891) Arthur Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. To increase his income Charles Altamont painted, made book illustrations, and also worked as a sketch artist on criminal trials. Not long after arriving Edinburgh he started to drink, he suffered from epilepsy and was eventually institutionalized. Doyle's mother was interested in literature, and she encouraged his son to take to books. Doyle read voluminously. At the age of fourteen he had learned French so that he read

http://www.saunalahti.fi/arnoldus/doyle.html

Although Conan Doyle continued to write Sherlock Holmes stories throughout his last decade, many agreed with T. S. Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan [k O u u n] Pronunciation Key Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan , English author and creator of Sherlock Holmes, b. Edinburgh. Educated at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, he received a medical degree in 1881. In 1887 the first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual. Doyle abandoned his medical practice in 1890 and devoted his time to writing. Other works that involve the sleuthing of the great detective include The Sign of the Four The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes The Hound of the Baskervilles The Return of Sherlock Holmes His Last Bow (1917), and The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes (1927). The brilliant and theatrical Holmes solves all his extraordinarily complex cases through ingenious deductive reasoning. His sober, credulous companion, Dr. Watson, narrates most of the Sherlock Holmes stories. The Holmes cult has given rise to several notable clubs, of which the Baker Street Irregulars is perhaps the most famous. Doyle also wrote historical romances, including Micah Clarke (1889) and The White Company (1891). His play

Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on May 22, 1859, into a large family with ancient historical roots. His education took place at home until he was sent away to a Jesuit school at the age of nine. He studied medicine at Edinburgh from 1876 to 1881. While at University and after, he took positions as ship’s doctor on voyages to Africa and the Artic. After completing his education, Doyle set up his own medical practice, and wrote in his spare time. His famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, was created and made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet , published in 1887. He then wrote a long historical named called Micah Clarke , published in 1889, before returning to Sherlock Holmes with The Sign of Four When the Strand magazine was created in 1891, Doyle saw it as an opportunity to revive Holmes for a series of shorter adventures. However, although the mysteries brought him success, Doyle was drawn to more serious writing and resolved to kill Sherlock Holmes. He attempted to do so in December of 1893 with The Final Problem , and afterwards wrote many other novels in various genres, but the public outcry caused him to eventually resurrect the detective for further cases. His stories were the forerunner of the great Golden Age of mystery in the 20’s and 30’s.
