The Hound of the Baskervilles
Brothers Judd Top 100 of the 20th Century: Novels
Author Info: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
I'd be happy to argue the point, but it seems to me that the four greatest fictional characters of all time (excluding Don Quijote , who's in a league of his own) are : Frankenstein's monster , Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and Tarzan . There are certainly no other characters who are so familiar, so often revived in plays, movies, song, television, and books, nor so often parodied and imitated as they. Take a look at your TV Guide and there'll be a movie featuring at least one of the four on the air at some point this week. They are all still just as popular as the day their authors introduced them. The reason for this is, first of all that they are simply brilliant creations, but secondly that they each in their own way tap into very powerful human fears and aspirations. Frankenstein's monster and Dracula represent victory over mortality. Tarzan represents victory over Nature. Sherlock Holmes represents the ultimate and inevitable triumph of reason over the mysteries of human behavior. Of this quartet, it is Holmes, because he is the most realistic character and because his victory seems closest to our grasp, who resonates most deeply with us. Realistically, none of us expect to gain eternal life nor to be plopped down in the jungle unexpectedly, but there's a sense in Holmes that, for all his genius, he is really just using the brain power that all of us share better than the rest of us do. As he tells Watson here, after one of his those classic moments where the good Doctor is stunned by one of Holmes's analyses :

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
Conan Doyle, British physician, novelist, and detective-story writer, creator of the unforgettable master sleuth Sherlock Holmes. Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh and educated at Stonyhurst College and the University of Edinburgh. From 1882 to 1890 he practiced medicine in Southsea, England. A Study in Scarlet, the first of 68 stories featuring Sherlock Holmes, appeared in 1887. The characterisation of Holmes, his ability of ingenious deductive reasoning, was based on one of the author's own university professors. Equally brilliant creations are those of Holmes's foils: his friend Dr. Watson, the good-natured if bumbling narrator of the stories, and the master criminal Professor Moriarty. Conan Doyle was so immediately successful in his literary career that approximately five years later he abandoned his medical practice to devote his entire time to writing. Some of the best known of the Holmes stories are The Sign of Four (1890), The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902), and His Last Bow (1917). They made Conan Doyle internationally famous and served to popularise the detective-story genre.

Ähnlich erging es Doyle 1890 mit seinem zweiten Roman "The Sign of the Four", der ebenfalls fast unbemerkt blieb.

When Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was knighted in 1902, there was some speculation that the honor was bestowed to recognize his achievement in The Hound of the Baskervilles. But the more seemly prelude was his pamphlet, The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct, The Sign of the Four, has some of the elements of the adventure story for boys, with its recollection of the bloody Indian Sepoy Rebellion of 1857. Among the most notable of his historical adventures are The White Company (1891) and Sir Nigel (1906). Conan Doyle, trained in medicine and with a sharp eye for scientific and logical plausibility, also wrote a number of science fiction stories. The character Professor Challenger of 1912's The Lost World, about living remnants of the prehistoric world, did not match Holmes in popularity, but he did inspire a large following himself, and he appeared again in other science fiction adventures, including The Poison Belt in 1913, and a collection of stories published posthumously in 1952. Upon his death in 1930, Conan Doyle left his family with the conviction that he would surely communicate with them from the spirit world which he held so dear.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Biographical notes by Blake Wilfong "My mind rebels at stagnation. Give me problems, give me work, give me the most abstruse cryptogram, the most intricate analysis, and I am in my own proper atmosphere.... I abhor the dull routine of existence. I crave for mental exaltation." British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) is best known for his numerous Sherlock Holmes detective stories. Indeed, Sherlock Holmes has far outlived his creator; modern writers continue to use the character in new stories, including science fiction. Doyle's own best-known science fiction work is his 1912 novel The Lost World , in which explorers encounter living dinosaurs on a South American plateau. He also wrote several lesser-known science fiction novels and short stories. Some of his tales reflected his belief in psychic phenomena and the occult, especially spiritualism. After an unsuccessful start as a physician, Doyle achieved wealth and fame with his writing. He left the medical profession in 1890 to write full time, and was knighted in 1902.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
WRITER The creator of Sherlock Holmes was born at no. 11 Picardy Place. He graduated as a doctor at Edinburgh University , where, it is said, the remarkable ability of one of his teachers, Dr Joseph Bell, to make accurate deductions from his observations led Conan Doyle later to create the character of the great detective. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in a series of short stories in the Strand Magazine in 1891. Conan Doyle's talents as a story-teller are also demonstrated in his novels Micah Clarke The White Company (1890) and The Sign of Four (1890). He served as a physician in the South African War, and in later life became a well-known member of the spiritualist movement.
