Arthur Conan Doyle was born on 22 May 1859 at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was institutionalised. He died in an asylum in 1893. Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Doyle was educated in Jesuit schools and later studied at Edinburgh University, qualifying as a doctor in 1885. After graduation Doyle practiced medicine until 1891, when he became a full time writer. Creativity was apparent in Doyle's ancestry: his grandfather was a famous caricaturist and his uncle was a well-known illustrator. Doyle's father was an architect, designer and book illustrator. Doyle himself was an admirer of Edgar Allan Poe and Emile Gaboriau.

Arthur Conan Doyle Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh on 22 May 1859. His mother, Mary, was of Irish extraction and traced her ancestry back to the famous Percy family of Northumberland and from there to the Plantagenet line. It is little wonder that the young Conan Doyle was told tales steeped in history which were to stand him in good stead when, in later years, he was to write his famous historical novels, The White Company Sir Nigel , and Micah Clarke Although the world has chosen to remember Sir Arthur Conan Doyle chiefly for his creation of the fictional master detective, Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle's life, like the literary canvas he painted, was varied and highly interesting. The effect of his father's alcoholism on Conan Doyle was profound and, whilst he chose to draw a veil over this particular topic in his autobiography Memories and Adventures , alcoholism is dealt with rather severely when it appears in his later fictional work. A Study in Scarlet , which appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual for 1887.

Famous Scots
- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) One of seven children, Doyle was born on 22 May, 1859, the son and grandson of artists (his grandfather was a political cartoonist in "Punch" magazine). He was educated at Stoneyhurst and studied medicine at Edinburgh University . After a spell as ship's surgeon on a whaling ship, he worked as a doctor from 1882-90 in practices in Southsea and London. But the success of his early fiction encouraged him to give this up and devote himself to writing. His first short story was published in 1879. His early stories such as "A Study in Scarlet" (1887) and "Sign of the Four" (1890) introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson for the first time. Holmes was based on a forensic medicine teacher at Edinburgh University, Dr Joseph Bell. The name Holmes had been derived from the American author Oliver Wendell Holmes. His "The White Company" set in the Hundred Years' War was regarded as one of the outstanding historical novels of his time. But it was "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" published in the Strand Magazine from 1891 to 1893 which gave him immediate, widespread fame. He killed off Holmes in 1893 but he reappeared in "The Hound of the Baskervilles" published in 1902.

Updated - Sunday, 2 September, 2001 British writer, creator Sherlock Holmes, the best-known detective in literature and the embodiment of sharp reasoning. Doyle (1859-1930) himself was not a good example of rational personality: he believed in fairies and was interested in occultism. Sherlock Holmes stories have been translated into more than fifty languages, and made into plays, films, radio and television series, a musical comedy, a ballet, cartoons, comic books, and advertisement. By 1920 Doyle was one of the most highly paid writers in the world. 'This is indeed a mystery,' I remarked. 'What do you imagine that it means?'
'I have no data yet. It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts...'
(from A Scandal in Bohemia Arthur Conan Doyle was born at Picardy Place, Edinburgh, as the son of Charles Altamont Doyle, a civil servant in the Edinburgh Office of Works, and Mary (Foley) Doyle. Both of Doyle's parents were Roman Catholics. His father suffered from epilepsy and alcoholism and was eventually institutionalized. Charles Altamot died in an asylum in 1893; in the same year Doyle decided to finish permanently the adventures of his master detective. Because of financial problems, Doyle's mother kept a boarding house. Dr. Tsukasa Kobayashi has alluded in an article, that Doyle's mother had a long affair with Bryan Charles Waller, a lodger and a student of pathology, who had a deep impact to Conan Doyle.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930)
What a debt we all owe to Arthur Conan Doyle's creation of Sherlock Holmes, one of the most exciting figures in all of English fiction, not to mention Holmes' lovable, genial companion Dr. Watson and his archenemy, the evil Professor Moriarty. Indeed, so fixed a part of our lives have these characters become that thousands and thousands of visitors come each year from all parts of the globe to visit 221B Baker Street in London to see where they believe Holmes lived and worked. There is a tavern nearby, " The Sherlock Holmes " that has a small upstairs exhibition of the fictional detectives pipe, deerstalker hat and so on. We can dismiss the rest of Conan Doyle's writings and we can only be amused by his belief in the supernatural and paranormal (he could be easily fooled by even the most amateur spiritualist and charlatan, as Houdini was to discover).
Doyle's stories about the eccentric, but brilliant detective and his unfailing powers of perception were apparently based on one of his teachers at the University of Edinburgh, where he studied medicine. They first appeared in A Study in Scarlet (1887). Evidence of his own medical training at Edinburgh surfaces from time to time in Doyle's detective stories. The instructor was greatly admired for his deductive reasoning, an attribute for which Sherlock Holmes was to become famous (Doyle then contributed additional stories in the Strand Magazine). When the writer killed off his famous detective in 1893, public demand made his restoration inevitable.

Best known as creator of perhaps the most famous detective in fiction, Arthur Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh. After an education spent at Educated at Stonyhurst College and Edinburgh University he started his practice as doctor in 1882 but had to abandon it relatively soon following the enormous success of his creation, Sherlock Holmes, who first appeared in A Study in Scarlet in 1887. Initially the character did not have such an impact on people until the short stories, later included in the Adventures , began to be published in the Strand Magazine . Doyle wrote also other mysteries ( The Doings of Raffles Haw The Mystery of Cloomber and The Surgeon of Gaster Fell ), collections of short stories, historical romances and history books on the Boer War and World War I. Unfortunately it was not the creation of Holmes that gave him the most satisfaction and Doyle was particularly annoyed that the success of his creation hindered his career as historian. He was knighted in 1902 for his activity in the Boer War. Doyle died in Crowborough, Sussex, England, on July 7, 1930.

A TRAGEDY
Who's that walking on the moorland?
Who's that moving on the hill?
They are passing 'mid the bracken,
But the shadows grow and blacken
And I cannot see them clearly on the hill. Who's that calling on the moorland? Who's that crying on the hill? Was it bird or was it human, Was it child, or man, or woman, Who was calling so sadly on the hill? Who's that running on the moorland? Who's that flying on the hill? But you cannot see him plain, For the shadow lies so darkly on the hill. What's that lying in the heather? What's that lurking on the hill? My horse will go no nearer, And I cannot see it clearer, But there's something that is lying on the hill. THE INNER ROOM Mine alone. I had it from my forbears Years agone. Yet within its walls I see A most motley company, And they one and all claim me As their own.
