IT Research Douglas Adams Answers (Finally) Posted by Roblimo on Wed Jun 21, '00 11:00 AM from the we-may-be-slow-but-we-get-there dept. I've gotten lots of e-mail asking, "Where are Douglas Adams' answers to our questions ? Has he forgotten us?" Obviously, no one was forgotten, but the man had a screenplay on deadline and had to work, work, work. Yes, if we had a hall of fame category for "Longest time between interview questions and responses to them," this one would be #1, but it was worth waiting for. Obviously there was never any cause for panic, but all true Douglas Adams fans already knew that, right? Relationship to Terry Pratchett? (Score:5, Interesting) by Enoch Root One author who is often compared to you in terms of style and humor is Terry Pratchett of Discworld fame. What is your opinion of Pratchett's work? Do you agree or disagree with the comparisons between your works? DA: I can't really answer this one. I've never read anything by Terry Pratchett.

Douglas Engelbart
In the late 1940s, Douglas Engelbart was stationed in the Philippines when he read Vannevar Bush's "As We May Think" in a Red Cross library. He became an early believer in Bush's idea of a machine that would aid human cognition. Later, he worked at Ames aeronautical lab, and developed the idea that would form the basis of today's computer interfaces. In the early 1960s, Engelbart began the Augmentation Research Centre (ARC), a development environment at the Stanford Research Institute. Here, he and his colleagues (William K. English and John F. Rulifson) created the On-Line System (NLS), the world's first implementation of what was to be called hypertext . Yet this was only a small part of what ARC was about. As he states in "Working Together," Engelbart was particularity concerned with "asynchronous collaboration among teams distributed geographically" (245). This endeavour is part of the study of Computer Supported Co-operative Work (CSCW); software which supports this goal is often called groupware. "Augmentation not automation" was the slogan, the goal being the enhancement of human abilities through computer technology. The key tools that NLS provided were:

"I'll always remember the first time I saw snow. I was twelve and it was just after the first and biggest divorce. I was in New York visiting my mother and was standing beside a traffic island in the middle of Park Avenue. I'd never been out of L.A. before. I was entranced by the big city. I was looking up at the Pan Am Building and contemplating the essential problem of Manhattan." "Which is ?" I ask. "Which is that there's too much weight improperly distributed: towers and elevators; steel, stone and cement. So much mass up so high that gravity itself could end up being warped some dreadful inversion an exchange program with the sky." (I love it when Claire gets weird.) "I was shuddering at the thought of this. But right then my brother Allan yanked at my sleeve because the walk signal light was green. And when I turned my head to walk across, my face went bang, right into my first snowflake ever. It melted in my eye. I didn't even know what it was at first, but then I saw

Rockwell Kent's Final Alaskan Trip by Doug Capra (c) 1997 An earlier version of this article was published in the Winter 1989 issue of the Kent Collector Kent, about the time he returned to Alaska. He's working on "Shipwreck, Coast of Ireland," now in the Rockwell Kent Gallery, Plattsburgh, N.Y. (from the New York World Telegram and Sun Newspaper Photography Collection) After leaving Fox Island in the spring of 1919, Rockwell Kent and his son stayed in Seward for a few days before leaving the Territory. Kent departed town on March 30, 1919 after a brief yet exciting letter-to-the-editor battle involving his and his son's alleged pro-German sentiments. In June, the Seward Gateway published an editorial titled "Shows He's Small," mentioning this controversy and obviously upset that Kent hadn't mentioned the town in a recent Literary Review article. For some background, follow this link to my Forward to Wilderness Many in Seward became aware of Wilderness A Journal of Quiet Adventure in Alaska but the Seward Gateway never made a point of announcing or reviewing its publication. At first this may seem strange, because Kent had many kind words to say about Seward. My research suggests that Kent's real enemy in all this had been the newspaper's editor, which makes the lack of any reference to Wilderness more realistic.

Phone: 1 (203) 432-4279
Fax: 1 (203) 432-4283 My research is in theoretical physics, primarily condensed matter physics, but more recently I have worked on areas in classical and quantum optics as well. Most of my work has been in the emerging sub-discipline of "mesoscopic" physics which treats physical systems, such as tiny electronic circuits, that are intermediate in size between single atoms and bulk solids. Dramatic advances in microfabrication technology have allowed experimental physicists to study the conducting properties of ultra-small electrical circuits, for example, wires no more than 500 atoms across. These experiments revealed completely unexpected quantum mechanical effects on conduction, similar to the interference of classical waves traversing a region containing a random array of scatterers. In small wires this interference can be detected by varying a weak magnetic field, revealing a complex pattern which we have shown is sensitive to the motion of a single impurity atom in the wire. My recent research has focused on the connection between these effects in mesoscopic solids and the general topic of "quantum chaos." Although there is no quantum analogue to the exponential instability found in classically chaotic systems, there are quantum signatures of the classical transition to chaos. These signatures had been observed only in atomic systems, but in 1990 we pointed out that they were also present in mesoscopic solids. In particular, the fluctuation properties of the conductance of semiconducting heterostructures depended upon the nature of the classical mechanics of the system (regular vs. chaotic). Recent experiments at Harvard, Yale (in Daniel Prober's laboratory), and Bell Labs have verified these ideas.

Premier T. C. Douglas of Saskatchewan Returns To Federal Politics
At The Helm Of The New Democratic Party Following His Election
As Party Leader At The Founding Convention In Ottawa.
Western Producer
By Gordon Dewar OTTAWAA new Canadian political party was born here last week and Saskatchewan Premier Tommy Duglas will return soon to federal politics as its leader. Of the birth of the New Democratic Party (which began the week simply as the New Party) it can safely be said that the mid-wives were more than satisfied. They had good cause to be. Elderly experts in politics say they have never seen a convention such as this. They point not only to the number of delegates, which at 1744 is the most ever registered for a political convention in Canada, but to the mood of the delegates. Enthusiasm at a convention is nothing new, perhaps, but enthusiasm which keeps every delegate in his seat on the convention floor for all sessions for five days is something new. The coliseum here, set up as it was with tables and chairs on the large central floor surrounded by the bands of seats common n any hockey arena, can hold a bet better than 4000 people. In the five days of the convention empty seats were a rarity.
