Sea the sea s horizon soars into the firmament Norman Douglas (18681952),Siren Land Now for a Gaelic Proverb for this month.
http://claymore.wisemagic.com/scotradiance/flotsam/flotsam603.htm
I imagine the first question anyone will ask is what is a column called "Scottish Flotsam". I guess we will have to begin with what is "flotsam". Among the definitions of the word are "things washed ashore" or "miscellaneous trifles". Well, we believe you can find some great treasure on the ocean shore. But you will never know what you will find or its value. So we decided that is what this column is - flotsam. We wanted a place to put things that didn't fit anywhere else and might be of interest. Each item could be a column itself and might be some day but for now it will be the flotsam, which washes our way. Lets begin with a famous Scot. Elizabeth Virginia Wallace Truman (1885-1982)
Whistle-stopping in 1948, President Harry Truman often ended his campaign talk by introducing his wife as "the Boss" and his daughter, Margaret, as "the Boss's Boss," and they smiled and waved as the train picked up steam. The sight of that close-knit family gallantly fighting against such long odds had much to do with his surprise victory at the polls that November. Strong family ties in the southern tradition had always been important around Independence, Missouri, where a baby girl was born to Margaret ("Madge") Gates and David Wallace on February 13, 1885. Christened Elizabeth Virginia, she grew up as "Bess." Harry Truman, whose family moved to town in 1890, always kept his first impression of her "golden curls" and "the most beautiful blue eyes." A relative said, "there never was but one girl in the world" for him. They attended the same schools from fifth grade through high school.

November 22, 1996 Advertising Booze
You can tell the ideals of a nation by its advertising. Norman Douglas(1868-1952)
There is a big debate about whether to advertise hard liquor on radio and television.I can see one of those commercials now: A glamorous couple, usually one male and one female, sitting on the edge of a bed sipping an amber colored liquid and looking longingly at each other, while the announcer says, "To free you of those inconvenient inhibitions, drink Seagrams." At the end of the commercial, a song tells the viewer that "just one glass does the trick." In a later commercial, we see the back of a man standing in front of a urinal, while the announcer says, "No need to drink a pint; just a few ounces of Seagrams will do it." I say "let 'em advertise!" Let's also advertise marijuana, cocaine, heroine, rifles, hand guns, dynamite and other explosives. Why not? We advertise beer, wine, prescription drugs, non-prescription drugs, pain killers of all kinds, laxatives, hemorrhoid treatments; in short, everything that isn't illegal. I can see it now, a man standing with a smoking automatic pistol, blowing the smoke coming out of the barrel and saying, "He won't bother me ever again." This is followed by an announcer who says, "To get the job done right, use Remington." Come to think of it, I used to see those commercials in the movies when I was a kid. They called them "westerns." I think that they still have them on television.

Douglas, Norman (1868-1952) Norman Douglas, who wrote travel books and autobiographical works, is best known for his explorations of the pleasures of the hedonistic life. Born in Thuringen, Vorarlberg, Austria to a Scottish father, the manager of a cotton mill, and a Scottish-German mother, Douglas was educated first at Uppingham School (1881-1883) and then Karlsruhe Gymnasium (1883-1889). Although keenly interested in natural history, he entered the British Foreign Office (1893-1901) and was posted to St. Petersburg from 1894 to 1896. He purchased property on Capri, the Mediterranean island about which he would write eight books, and in 1898 married his cousin, Elizabeth Theobaldino FitzGibbon. They had two sons, but the marriage ended in 1904. Faced with financial reverses in 1907, Douglas existed in near and sometimes actual poverty for almost two decades as he and later his companion, Guiseppe Orioli, lived variously in London, Paris, St. Malo, Menton, Florence, Lisbon, and London, before returning to Capri in 1946.
