85. Lewis Carroll Biography
Classic Brain Puzzles (Ward Lock), both written by Philip Carter andKen Russell. The Reverend Charles Lutwidge. Dodgson (1832 1898).
http://www.knowl.demon.co.uk/page33.html
Born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson at Daresbury, Cheshire, England, in 1832, he was educated at Rugby and Oxford, took orders in 1861, and was a lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church College, Oxford, from 1855-81 when he resigned to devote his life to writing under his pseudonym, Lewis Carroll.
As a boy he was fascinated by the craft of conjuring and this, together with ideas for games, puzzles, anagrams, riddles, chess problems, mathematical recreation and logic, occupied his mind for all of his life. He was responsible for many original puzzles and new innovations, including ‘Doublets’ invented in 1879 and ‘The Game of Logic’ in 1886.
One can appreciate the extent of his obsession with puzzles when considering that almost all seventy-two of his ‘Pillow-Problems’, many of which had complicated mathematical solutions, were compiled by him while lying awake at night. He would commit nothing to paper until the morning, when he would first of all write down the answer, followed by the question and then the detailed solution.
The children’s classic: ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ (1865) was written for the young Alice Liddell, the daughter of the head of his Oxford college. along with its sequel ‘Through the Looking Glass’ (1872) it combines elements of fantasy, logic and nonsense. He also wrote nonsense verse, notably ‘The Hunting of the Snark’ (1876).

THE MAKING OF ALICE IN WONDERLAND
The
of Alice In Wonderland
There have been any number of illustrators for this delightfully nonsensical tale over the years. The appearance of the characters has also tended to change, according to each artists' style. Each set of illustrations was richly evocative of the tale, however, and each has contributed to our continued enjoyment of this story. The work of several of the earliest illustrators has been chosen for inclusion here, along with two more contemporary artists. Sound a wee bit surreal? Perhaps. But then, so is the story itself. To the best of our knowledge, this BEDTIME-STORY CLASSIC is the only rendering of Alice In Wonderland which successfully melds the nearly complete works of multiple artists with the tale itself.

Abbot, George [1562 - ?]
George Abbot was born in Guildford in 1562, the son of a cloth-worker. He received a good education at the local Royal Grammar School and went up to Oxford. He was a talended scholar, particularly of classical languages. He befriended King James I and was one of the translators of the Authorised Version of the Bible - now known as the King James Bible. The King favoured Abbot, making him first a bishop and in 1611 Archbishop of Canterbury.
As Archbishop, Abbot became a wealthy man. His arms - a chevron between three gold pears - were updated to be halved with the arms of the See of Canterbury. He decided to reward the town of his birth and education by building a "hospital" - an almshouse where elderly Guildford men and women could lead out their lives in comfort. It was named the Hospital of the Blessed Trinity, but is now more commonly known as Abbot's Hospital
He is buried in the Holy Trinity Church , directly opposite the hospital. A

Carroll used the surrealistic settings of his fantasy world to question the commonly accepted ways of thinking. Unlike other children's books of the time, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland did not try to teach a moral message. Carroll also wrote poetry which have remained open to all explanations of meaning. "I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, sir," said Alice, "because I'm not myself, you see."
"I don't see," said the Caterpillar.
"I'm afraid I can't put it more clearly," Alice replied very politely, "for I can't understand it myself top begin with; and being so many different sizes in a day is very confusing."
    "It isn't," said the Caterpillar.

    Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll's life was filled with contradictions. Some reports suggest that he was so shy he could sit at a party for hours without adding a word to the conversation. Others say that he was a sociable, charming man who had many friends. One undisputed fact about him, however, is that his two Alice books are among the most entertaining children's stories ever written. Lewis Carroll was born Charles Lutwidge Dodgson in 1832 in Daresbury, Cheshire, England. He was the third of the 11 children of the Reverend Charles Dodgson and his wife, Frances Jane Lutwidge. In Dodgson's early years, he was educated at home. His "reading lists" show that he was very intelligent. He entertained his brothers and sisters by creating his own magazines full of poetry, stories, and drawings. After the age of 12, Dodgson was educated at private schools. He went on to Christ Church, a college at Oxford University, in 1851. He was a brilliant student, especially in mathematics. After graduating in 1854, he became a lecturer in mathematics at Christ Church. Despite reports that his lectures were extremely boring, he held this position for the next 26 years. Dodgson was a shy man who sometimes stuttered when he was nervous. However, among children, he was thoroughly at home. Some stories about him say that he lost his stutter when he was with children. One of his young friends, the dainty Alice Liddell, was his favorite child. She was one of the three daughters of the dean of Christ Church.
