Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is better known by the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll". Although he was a mathematician, he is best known as the author of Alice's adventures in wonderland (1865) and Through the looking glass (1872), children's books that are among the most popular of all time. They are distinguished as satire and as examples of verbal wit. Dodgson wrote mathematical works under his own name but for his children's books he invented the pen name "Lewis Carroll" by translating his first two names "Charles Lutwidge" into Latin as "Carolus Lodovicus", then anglicising and reversing their order. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's father was the Reverend Charles Dodgson. Charles Dodgson senior was born in 1800 and studied at the University of Oxford where he gained a First Class degree in both mathematics and classics. He was appointed as a mathematics lecturer at Oxford where he held a Fellowship but, on marrying his cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827, he had to give up his Oxford Fellowship. He then became a curate at All Saints' Church in Daresbury and it was in that town that ten of Charles and Frances' eleven children were born. Charles Lutwidge was the eldest of his parents three boys, having two elder sisters Fanny, born in 1828, and Elizabeth, born in 1830. Charles was baptised on 11 July 1832 in his father's church and grew up in a strict Christian household. His early education, like that of his brothers and sisters, was provided by his parents. He read mostly religious books as a child and an indication of his rapid progress is that he had read

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was born at Daresbury, Cheshire, on January 27, 1832. His parents were clergyman Charles and Frances Dodgson (nee Lutwidge). He was the oldest son, and third of 11 children. At an early age to entertain himself and his family Charles began magic tricks, marionette shows, drawings, poems, and stories written for homemade newspapers. These magazines included "Useful and Instructive Poetry" (five issues), "The Rectory Magazine" (nine issues), and "The Rectory Umbrella". Charles was eleven when his family moved to Croft in North Yorkshire and, at the age of twelve, was sent to Richmond School as a border. He was taught at Richmond by James Tate who formed a good idea of Charles' potential, especially in mathematics. On the 27th of January 1846 Charles was enrolled at Rugby and stayed for three years. When Charles was young he wrote to entertain his brothers and sisters. He didn't stop writing while he was in school. In 1860 Dodgson published his first two mathematical textbooks and, by February 1861, had completed another and started work on four more. He also contributed to the magazine "The Train". Alice's adventures began on a boating trip on the Thames going to Godstow in the summer of 1862. In August he made two more river trips with the Liddell children and continued the Alice stories.

CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODSON "LEWIS CARROLL" Lewis Carroll, born Charles Lutwidge Dodson in Daresbury, Cheshire, on January 27, 1832, was the son of a churchman and the eldest of eleven children. His mother and father were first cousins, and unusually religious. At the time of his birth, his father, Dr. Dodgson, was the vicar of Daresbury, Cheshire (he later was presented with the Crown living of Croft, Yorkshire, and subsequently became Archdeacon of Richmond and one of the Canons of Ripon Cathedral), and was a distinguished scholar whose favorite study was mathematics. Carroll went to Mr. Tate's school at Richmand at age 12; his father having educated him until then. Carroll excelled in his studies and became the champion of the weak and small. He earned the reputation of "a boy who knew how to use his fists in a righteous cause." After contributing a story to the school magazine, Dr. Tate wrote to Dr. Dodgson that Charles had "a very uncommon share of genius," and "you may fairly anticipate for him a bright career." From Richmond, Carroll went to Rugby to further his education, and then on to Christ Church College, University of Oxford, his father's college. According to the terms of the studentship, Carroll was to remain unmarried and proceed to holy orders. Several years later he was ordained a deacon, but he never proceeded to priest's orders. Throughout his education, Carroll consistantly distinguished himself with honors, congradulations, and respect from his peers and mentors alike. He wrote, "I am getting tired of being congratulated on various subjects; there seems to be no end of it."

    http://www.warrington-past-present.cwc.net/lewis_carroll.htm
Lewis Carroll Home Contents Lewis Carroll is well known throughout the world as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass . Behind the famous pseudonym was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a mathematical lecturer at Oxford University with remarkably diverse talents. Dodgson's boyhood was spent in Newton-by-Daresbury, Cheshire, where he was born on the 27th January 1832, and in Croft, Yorkshire. He spent his adult life in Oxford and died at Guildford in 1898. Besides the Alice books, he wrote many others including poems, pamphlets and articles. He was a skilled mathematician, logician and pioneering photographer and he invented a wealth of games and puzzles which are of great interest today. Through his range of talents he has acquired great respect and has a large following. Charles was the first son, although not the first child, of Rev. C. Dodgson, Vicar of Daresbury and his wife Frances Jane nee Lutwidge. Not much is known about young Charles - or his family for that matter - during this period although it is known that the Dodgson's had a connection with Cheshire that spanned more than a decade and in the case of Charles Lutwidge this covered eleven years (1832-43) The "world", young and impressionable Charles Lutwidge Dodgson came into was that of rural Cheshire and it was a landscape and a way of life untouched by the great changes that were then occurring elsewhere in the North and other parts of the British Isles. No "Satanic mills" could be found there least not Newton-by-Daresbury and the immediate surroundings, and this was to be the setting for young Charles for the first eleven years of his life.
