Charles Lutwidge Dodgson is better known by the pseudonym "Lewis Carroll". Although he was a mathematician, he is best known as the author of Alice's adventures in wonderland (1865) and Through the looking glass (1872), children's books that are among the most popular of all time. They are distinguished as satire and as examples of verbal wit. Dodgson wrote mathematical works under his own name but for his children's books he invented the pen name "Lewis Carroll" by translating his first two names "Charles Lutwidge" into Latin as "Carolus Lodovicus", then anglicising and reversing their order. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson's father was the Reverend Charles Dodgson. Charles Dodgson senior was born in 1800 and studied at the University of Oxford where he gained a First Class degree in both mathematics and classics. He was appointed as a mathematics lecturer at Oxford where he held a Fellowship but, on marrying his cousin Frances Jane Lutwidge in 1827, he had to give up his Oxford Fellowship. He then became a curate at All Saints' Church in Daresbury and it was in that town that ten of Charles and Frances' eleven children were born. Charles Lutwidge was the eldest of his parents three boys, having two elder sisters Fanny, born in 1828, and Elizabeth, born in 1830. Charles was baptised on 11 July 1832 in his father's church and grew up in a strict Christian household. His early education, like that of his brothers and sisters, was provided by his parents. He read mostly religious books as a child and an indication of his rapid progress is that he had read

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (* 27. Januar 1832 in Daresbury - † 14.

RACCONTA.IT HOME RACCONTI SOMMARIO Lewis Carrol Una breve biografia Pseudonimo dell'inglese Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-98), matematico di professione e difensore di Euclide, oggi però noto in tutto il mondo come autore di Alice's Adventures in Wonderland e della continuazione Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (traduzione italiana: Attraverso lo specchio).

[CHARLES LUTWIDGE DODGSON] (1832-1898)
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland . By Lewis Carroll. With Forty-Two Illustrations by John Tenniel. New York: Appleton and Co., 1866. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson was a lecturer at Christ Church, Oxford, a clergyman, and a professional mathematician. It is not surprising, then, that this "juvenile"originally written for the three Liddell children, daughters of the Dean, but particularly for Alice Liddell (later Hargreaves)should have such a strong appeal for adults. Alice , as well as its equally famous sequel Through the Looking Glass , both of which were written under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll, abounds in sophisticated humor, satire, puns, and philosophical observations. When Dodgson decided to have Alice published, he had to pay for the printing of 2,000 copies himself. It was done at the Oxford University Press and was to be published by Macmillan on commission. The 1865 Oxford printingnow more familiarly known as "the 1865 Alice "proved unsatisfactory to both the author and the illustrator and Dodgson had all copies recalled after a few had been sold or distributed by presentation. He regained all but ten copies, kept two himself, and distributed the remaining recalled copies (thirty-six) to hospitals. A second edition of Alice , more to the author's standards, was published by Macmillan in 1866, printed by the firm of R. Clay.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, also known as Lewis Carroll (his pseudonym), was born in 1832 and educated at Rugby College and Christ Church, Oxford. Although a lecturer in mathematics there from 1855, Dodgson achieved international fame as the author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1866) and Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found there (1871). A boat ride with the three daughters of H. G. Liddell, dean of Christ Church Alice, Edith, and Lorina inspired him to write these tales, which include much of his extant verse.
