    WORLD OF THE CHILD
    Stories: After 1850

The second half of the nineteenth century was the golden age of children's literature in England and the United States. Great writers teamed with great illustrators to produce the books we still consider classics. The industrial revolution led to advances in printing which made books colorful, affordable, and plentiful. The growing middle class, with its increased interest in education, expanded the audience for children's books.
    Uncle Tom's Cabin
One of the most influencial books of nineteenth-century America, was first published in book form in 1852. Within a year, simplified editions for children appeared in both the United States and England. In this retelling, portions of the story are in verse. An introduction states: "this little work is designed to adapt Mrs. Stowe's touching narrative to the understandings of the youngest readers and to foster in their hearts a generous sympathy for the wronged Negro race of America."

Men from Burlington County petitioned the New Jersey Constitutional Convention to enfranchise women. Their petition went unheeded and the Constitutional Convention validated the Act of 1807 and wrote white male suffrage into the new Constitution. Dorothea Lynde Dix (1802-1887) sent her "memorial" to the New Jersey senate regarding the inhumane care of the state's mentally ill. Susan Waters, of Bordentown, was well known for her primitive style paintings. The New Jersey legislature revised its abolition law: enslaved blacks became apprentices for life; their children were free. Women in Salem, New Jersey organized the Martha Washington Salem Union, No. 4, a chapter of the Daughters of Temperance, pledging not to "make, sell, or use" alcoholic beverages. New Jersey State Lunatic Asylum opened in Ewing Township, near Trenton, resulting from reform efforts of Dorothea Lynde Dix (1802-1887). The New Jersey Legislature passed the state's first law criminalizing the practice of abortion. Causing and procuring "the miscarriage of a woman then pregnant with child" was deemed a misdemeanor, or high misdemeanor if the pregnant woman died.

The most comprehensive book for the early childhood teacher looking to set up a developmentally appropriate curriculum and environment. From child care programs needing to select an official "curriculum" to teachers reading for their own benefit, this book is a wealth of information. I love this book because it is easily readable, contains information for parents about what happens in the classroom, and allows teachers flexibility. The newest edition contains information on assessment, planning, and additional interest areas. Creative Curriculum for Early Childhood It's one of the most comprehensive books I've seen concerning the early childhood setting and it's learning centers. The Authors present a wide variety of learning center activities that meet the changing developmental needs of young children, focuses on open-ended materials and experiences so well suited to the interest and abilities of young children. This book is a valuable source of information that can fit into any style teaching!
