By J. Frank Dobie A horse's performance under saddle tells what he is. The stories that follow are, in a way, the finality on the mustang breed. They belong to the times when "a man on foot was no man at all." When a man's horse was his best friend and a horseman unhorsed was sin pies

    84. Rabbits, Foxes, And Wolves
The average Ph.D. thesis is nothing but a transference of bones from one graveyard to another. . J. Frank Dobie (1888–1964), US author.

    Rabbits, Foxes, and Wolves
One sunny day a rabbit came out of his hole in to enjoy the fine weather. The day was so nice that he became careless and a fox sneaked up on him. "I am going to eat you for lunch," said the fox. "Wait," replied the rabbit, "You should at least wait a few days." "Why should I wait?" "Well, I am just finishing my thesis on 'The Superiority of Rabbits over Foxes and Wolves.'" "I should eat you right now. Everybody knows that a fox will always win over a rabbit." "Not according to my research. If you like, you can come into my hole and read it for yourself. If you are not convinced, you can go ahead and have me for lunch." "As the fox was curious and had nothing to lose, he went with the rabbit ... but he never came out. A few days later the rabbit was again taking a break from writing and sure enough, a wolf came out of the bushes and was ready to set upon him. "Wait," yelled the rabbit, "you can't eat me right now." "And why might that be, my furry appetizer?"

  • Texas Writers Overview
By Diane LaGrone Texas is the land of vaqueros, cotton, and oil wells—as well as all the vibrant images that those things seem to produce. These stereotypical views that most people have of Texas are not too far from reality. It is, however, a land that was, by those struggling to settle the southwest, sacrificially carved from the rawest of resources before it became the state of diverse cultures that we see today. All of these facets of Texas are reflected in its vast literature; the common thread running through it all is a connection with the outdoors. Whether the subject is the Texas Rangers (the ones carrying six-shooters and long rifles, not the baseball players) as glorified by Walter Prescott Webb, or J. Frank Dobies'

The cemetery is situated in the southeast section of the city of Hastings and adjacent to both Gauardian Angels and St. Boniface Catholic Cemeteries. Most of the marked burials are located in the eastern half of this cemetery. There were a few burials in the western half of this cemetery. This cemetery contains a small Ash Garden in the western section. The ash garden is fenced on three sides and has burial stones for Patricia Ann Hall and Zelda Y. Boenig. In the 1910 "History of Dakota and Goodhue Counties, Minnesota", by Editor-In-Chief Franklyn Curtiss-Wedge, he wrote: ‘... St. Luke’s Parish Cemetery ... 9 May 1856, Abraham Traux donated five acres of land in the southwest quarter of section 34 to the parish of St. Luke’s for the purpose of a cemetery, to be governed by the church. The first body buried in this cemetery was that of Mrs. Hetherington, in May 1856.’ (page 272)
