The Black Book Surge
and Two University Presses

The University of North Texas Press came to our attention through its by Alan B. Govenar and Jay F. Brakefield (1998, ISBN 1574410512). This was while we were compiling our bibliography of black nonfiction books published in the last decade of the twentieth century. The focus of Deep Ellum appeared to be a significantly relevant one for the era into which publishing was clearly entering. We had no fix on this publisher which was obviously poised on the threshold of the surge of the publication of books by and about blacks. A look at this imprint and its backlist suggests that UNT Press correctly assessed the promising future for subjects dealing with black Americans and their quotidian life and history. A look at the publications list of The University of North Texas Press in this regard is instructive. This press was established in August 1987, and published its first books in 1989. Further, it claims to publish approximately 16 to 20 books a year, with more than 140 books currently in print. Deep Ellum

Easy, informal style.” Reese, Six Score 1: “This is perhaps the most straightforward account of cowboy life. Teddy Blue Abbott was raised in Nebraska; after leaving home, his first job as a cowboy was with the notorious Olive outfit. He had numerous other jobs before coming up the trail to Montana in 1883, where he remained. In 1884 Abbott went to work for Granville Stuart, foreman and part-owner of the D-H-S outfit, at that time the largest in Montana. Eventually he married one of Stuart’s daughters and settled down, but not before some hot times in Miles City and elsewhere.” Smith 1.      $350.00

The bottom two floors contain a small mall, with a food court and retailers catering to college students. It houses over 900 students. The Dobie Center was named after J. Frank Dobie, 1888-1964. He was a teacher, historian, author and folklorist. He was born in southern Texas on a ranch and lived in Austin and attended college at Southwestern University in Georgetown just North of Austin. There is a statue of him in Zilker Park along with other famous people from Austin's past. In 1994 the building's facade received a face lift. The mortar was failing and bricks were falling from the building's upper floors. The work was done during the summer break and was completed in just 90 days. The interior was remodeled as well. The building now has a 100% occupancy rate.

DOBIE, JAMES FRANK (1888-1964). J. Frank Dobie, folklorist, was born on a ranch in Live Oak County, Texas, on September 26, 1888, the eldest of six children of Richard J. and Ella (Byler) Dobie. His ranching heritage became an early influence on his character and personality. His fundamentalist father read the Bible to Frank and the other five children, and his mother read them Ivanhoe and introduced them to The Scottish Chiefs Pilgrim's Progress , and Swiss Family Robinson . He left the ranch when he was sixteen and moved to Alice, where he lived with his Dubose grandparents and finished high school. In 1906 he enrolled in Southwestern University in Georgetown, where he met Bertha McKee, whom he married in 1916, and Professor Albert Shipp Pegues, his English teacher, who introduced him to English poetry, particularly the Romantics, and encouraged him as a writer. Dobie's education as a teacher and writer continued after graduation in 1910. He worked two summers as a reporter, first for the San Antonio Express and then the Galveston Tribune . He got his first teaching job in 1910 in Alpine, where he was also the principal, play director, and editor of the school paper. He returned to Georgetown in 1911 and taught in the Southwestern University preparatory school until 1913, when he went to Columbia to work on his master's degree. With his new M.A. he joined the University of Texas faculty in 1914. At this time he also joined the Texas Folklore Society.
