Dixon, Thomas Jr.
1864-1946, Writer.
Born in the rural North Carolina Piedmont a year before the Civil War ended, Thomas Dixon lived to see the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and the end of World War II. Between 1902 and 1939 he published 22 novels, as well as numerous plays, screenplays, books of sermons, and miscellaneous nonfiction. Educated at Wake Forest and Johns Hopkins, Dixon was a lawyer, state legislator, preacher, novelist, playwright, actor, lecturer, real-estate speculator, and movie producer. Familiar to three presidents and such notables as John D. Rockefeller, he made and lost millions, ending up an invalid court clerk in Raleigh, N.C. Paradoxically, Dixon is among the most dated and most contemporary of southern writers. In genre an early 19th-century romancer, thematically Dixon argued for three interrelated beliefs still current in southern life: the need for racial purity, the sanctity of the family centered on a traditional wife and mother, and the evil of socialism. In the Klan trilogy - The Leopard's Spots HTML file SGML/TEI file The Clansman SGML/TEI file HTML file The Traitor (1907) - and in The Sins of the Fathers (1912), Dixon presents racial conflict as an epic struggle, with the future of civilization at stake. Although Dixon personally condemned slavery and Klan activities after Reconstruction ended, he argued that blacks must be denied political equality because that leads to social equality and miscegenation, thus to the destruction of both family and civilized society. Throughout his work, white southern women are the pillars of family and society, the repositories of all human idealism.

- Book Review, by Dixon, Thomas, Jr.
From The Critics
Booknews

The 1905 second novel of Dixon's (1864-1946) Reconstruction trilogy was controversial when it appeared, as was the movie made from it, a decade later. Its racist interpretation of US history and society, however, reflected mainstream public opinion at the time. Noting that it was never considered good literature, Wintz (history, Texas Southern U.) abridges it be accessible to students of politics, especially racial politics in America at the turn of the century. Environment, Scarcity, and Violence
- Book Review, by Homer-Dixon, Thomas F.
John Stackhouse, Toronto Globe and Mail

"[The book's] assertion that violence and the environment may be linked, and its conclusion that most big developing countries appear to be hurtling toward more internal conflict, are too important and intriguing to be left to an academic audience."
Card catalog description
From the Back Cover

"This is an important book. Homer-Dixon moves the arguments about environmental scarcity and violent conflict forward a big step. I doubt if much will be written about the subjects in the next ten years that does not build on it, follow out some of its leads, or try to refute it." (Robert Jervis, Institute for War and Peace Studies, Columbia University) "Thomas Homer-Dixon has thought more deeply, reasoned more carefully, and written more coherently about the environment/scarcity/violence nexus than anyone else I know of. This is a brilliant bookmust reading for anyone concerned about the human condition in the twenty-first century." (John P. Holdren, Center for Science and International Affairs, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University) About the Author Thomas F. Homer-Dixon is Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies Program at the University of Toronto. He is the author of Environmental Scarcity and Global Security and the forthcoming book The Ingenuity Gap.

As the world becomes more complex, so do its problemsand the solutions to these problems become tougher to grasp, writes University of Toronto professor Thomas Homer-Dixon in The Ingenuity Gap. "As we strive to maintain or increase our prosperity and improve the quality of our lives, we must make far more sophisticated decisions, and in less time, than ever before," he writes. Is the day coming in which our ingenuity can't keep up? Homer-Dixon fears that it is: "the hour is late," and we're...

As I note in another review, the intro to this edition is explicitly white supremacist. It's not a mistake that happened to slip by the (otherwise decent) folks at Noontide Press. The Press publishes exclusively whack-job conspiracy theories about how Jews/Blacks/the Illuminati/Elders of Zion/UN fetishists/Masonic wizards, etc. are secretly running the world that oppressed Nazis/Klansman/Christian Identitarians/etc. need to take back. Can Anyone Else Really Write Like This?
I've been re-reading Thomas Pynchon's , and I've been astonished anew at his verbal virtuosity. Here's how he describes astronomer Charles Mason's first encounter with his future wife at the blessing of "The Octuple Gloucester" (a cheese nearly four tons in weight and ten feet tall) after it escapes its carriage and bears down a hill on Mason: "Ahr! Mercy!" He threw his arms in front of his Face and succumb'd before the cylindrickal Onslaught, with a peculiar Horror at having been singl'd out for Misadventure... The Victim of a Cheese malevolent , being his last thought before abrupt Rescue by way of a stout shove, preceded by an energetick Rustling of Taffeta, as he went toppling onto his face, grass up his Nose, hearing thro' his Belly the homicidal Ponderosity roll by without the interruption of a flatten'd Mason to divert it from its Destiny. As he arose, slowly, holding his head, blowing out alternate Nostrils, her Voice reach'd him. "Were it Night-time, Sir, I'd say you were out Star-Gazing." She put upon her r the same vigorous Edge as his Father on a difficult day, withal, "Star-Gazing" in those parts was a young man's term for masturbating. He might have said something then to regret forever, but her looks had him stupefied. If she was not, like Susannah, a Classick English Rose, neither was she any rugged Blossom of the Heath. He found himself staring at the shape of her mouth, her Lips slightly apart, in an Inquiry that just fail'd to be a Smile..
