The exhibition Scenes from an Extraordinary Life focuses on some of the key stepping stones in Disraeli's long and fascinating life. The exhibition draws mainly on Disraeli's private papers held in the Library on deposit from the National Trust, the owners of Hughenden Manor, Disraeli's Buckinghamshire home, and additional material lent by the John Murray Archive and three private collectors. En route he had split the Conservatives by spearheading the defeat of Sir Robert Peel over the repeal of the corn laws, practically invented the role of Leader of the Opposition in the House of Commons in the 1850s, set in process the modernisation of the Conservative party's organisation, served three times as Chancellor of the Exchequer, piloted the 1867 Reform Bill through the Commons and pursued an imperialist foreign policy. Born into the Jewish faith and later baptised, he had to contend with the marked antisemitism of the times.

    Benjamin Disraeli
Benjamin Disraeli was born Jewish and is therefore sometimes considered Britain's first Jewish Prime Minister. In fact, he was a practicing Anglican. In 1813, his father's quarrel with the synagogue of Bevis Marks led to the decision in 1817 to have his children baptized as Christians (ironically, when Disraeli was 13 and eligible for Bar Mitzvah ). Until 1858 Jews were excluded from Parliament; except for the father's decision Disraeli's political career could never have taken the form it did. Benjamin Disraeli, was born in London on 21st December, 1804. His father, Isaac Disraeli, was the author of several books on literature and history, including The Life and Reign of Charles I (1828). After a private education Disraeli was trained as a solicitor. Like his father, Isaac Disraeli, Benjamin took a keen interest in literature. His first novel, Vivian Grey was published in 1826. The book sold very well and was followed by The Young Duke Contarini Fleming Alroy Henrietta Temple (1837) and Venetia Benjamin Disraeli was also interested in politics. In the early 1830s he stood in several elections as a Whig, Radical and as an Independent. Disraeli's early attempts ended in failure, but he was eventually elected to represent Maidstone in 1837.

National Trust. When Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881) determined that his rising ambitions required a personal motto, he chose forti nihil difficile, or "nothing is difficult to the strong." Strength of will, one assumesfor a Jew in pre-Victorian England had barriers before him that would have dissuaded most aspirants for status. Until 1829, Roman Catholics were disenfranchised, and could not hold public office or be involved in such professions as law. Universities were also closed to them. For Disraeli, born Benjamin D'Israeli in Bloomsbury, where his father was a dilettante man of letters, the path was smoothed by the nonbelieving Isaac, who, cynically, had his son converted, at twelve, to the Anglican persuasion, to open up opportunities.
Always a romantic, Disraeli liked to believe that his ancestors were cultured Jews from Golden Age Spain, but in reality his grandfather had emigrated from Cento, in Italy near Ferrara, where he was a seller of straw hats. The family, before that, had probably come from Syria or Turkey. His recollections would sometimes claim Venice for his family. If their origins had to be in Italy, he preferred the most exotic of Italian places. He liked to think of himself as an aristocrat, even if not of the Anglo-Saxon variety.

The Tories would fragment on the issue of free trade, and Disraeli, a loyalist, inherited some of the remaining prominence within the party. On becoming a minority government in 1852, he would achieve cabinet office for the first time, as Chancellor of the Exchequer. The experience was brief, but it whetted his appetite for power and position, which left him in a quandary as the Commons debated, year after year, the issue of amending its oaths requirement to permit Jews to sit. Several, including Lionel de Rothschild, one of the world's most influential bankers, had run time and time again, rejected after each election by their refusal to take a parliamentary oath on the Christian bible. Rothschild had already turned down a baronetcy from Victoria, as only a barony would place him in the House of Lords, where he might defy the oaths requirement in the upper house.

Three Great Zionist Men of Faith God raised up three great Zionist men of faith whom He used at crucial points during Israel’s march to statehood. 1 – Benjamin Disraeli [1804-1881] and the Berlin Congress of Nations [1878] Benjamin Disraeli traced his roots to a Jewish family expelled from Spain in the 15th century. He became Britain’s Prime Minister in 1868, and a confidant and counselor of Queen Victoria. He presented her with the controlling shares in the Suez Canal Company, which had been financed by the Rothschilds. Due to his political acumen, Disraeli opened the British trade route to India and obtained a foothold in Egypt. He passed a bill in parliament conferring upon Queen Victoria the title of Empress of India. For his services, Disraeli was awarded the title of Earl of Beaconsfield. From 1876 to 1878 Disraeli’s premiership was dominated by the Eastern Question. He fought for equal rights for Jews everywhere and believed in the return of the Jewish People to Palestine.

After a period in a solicitor's office, Disraeli wrote the novel Vivian Grey (1826), and others, and the brilliant pamphlet Vindication of the English Constitution (1835). Entering Parliament in 1837, after four unsuccessful attempts, he was laughed at as a dandy. His ideas were expounded in the novels Coningsby Sybil (1845), and Tancred Disraeli gradually came to be recognized as the leader of the Conservative Party in the Commons. In 1868 Disraeli became Prime Minister, but a few months later he was defeated at a feneral election. During the six years of opposition that followed he wrote another novel, Lothair (1870), and established a Conservative central office, the prototype of modern party organization. In 1874 Disraeli took office, purchased from the Khedive of Egypt a controlling interest in the Suez Canal, and conferred on the Queen the title of Emperess of India. He accepted an erldom in 1876. His government was defeated in 1880, and a year later Disraeli died, after writing Endymion Disraeli has, in

Goethe, Faust , Faust Study 'Tis written: "In the beginning was the Word!" Here now I'm balked! Who'll put me in accord? It is impossible, the Word so high to prize, I must translate it otherwise If I am rightly by the Spirit taught. 'Tis written: In the beginning was the Thought! Consider well that line, the first you see, That your pen may not write too hastily! Is it then Thought that works, creative, hour by hour? Thus should it stand: In the beginning was the Power! Yet even while I write this word, I falter, For something warns me, this too I shall alter. The Spirit's helping me! I see now what I need And write assured: In the beginning was the Deed! Goethe, Faust , Studierzimmer Geschrieben steht: Im Anfang war das Wort! Hier stock ich schon! Wer hilft mir weiter fort?

CRYPTOGRAMS MAGAZINE NO. 1 NOTES OF INTEREST Chiasmus (k I -az'm u s) Fair is foul, and foul is fair. -Macbeth -consists of two parallel phrases in which corresponding words are placed in the opposite order. The Oxford English Dictionary defines chiasmus as, "A grammatical figure by which the order of words in one of two parallel clauses is inverted in the other." The word goes back to the ancient Greeks. The "chi" comes from chi, the letter "X" in the Greek alphabet. The word itself comes from the Greek word khiasmos, meaning "crossing." Khiasmos, in turn, is derived from the Greek word khiazein, meaning "to mark with an X." We all know examples of chiasmus, even if we don’t know the term. Two of the better known examples are Mae West’s “ It’s not the men in my life, but the life in my men.” and President Kennedy’s “ Ask not what your country...” . I introduced this literary device on my cryptogram website in 2001 to pleasant acceptance and so have included it in this special edition of the magazine. The book pictured was written in 1999 by Dr. Mardy Grothe, a psychologist and word lover from Boston. It contains many great examples and a full explanation of chiasmus. It is available from Amazon and other book stores as a paper back.
