ST. NICHOLAS CORRESPONDENCE
Collection Number Collection Dates Collection Volume 1.20 cu.ft. (4 boxes) Biographical Sketch Related Collections Box Inventory
Provenance
Letters purchased circa 1975 from unknown dealer. This collection represents only a minute part of the correspondence of the editors of St. Nicholas magazine. In 1914, 1915, and 1928, hundreds of letters from Scribner's and the Century Company's archives were auctioned off as collector's items. The majority of the existing St. Nicholas correspondence is now held at the New York Public Library. Columbia University and the Huntington Library hold sizable collections of the letters of Mary Mapes Dodge.
Restrictions
Non-circulating; available for research. Researchers should use the photocopies in Box 4 unless special permission is obtained from the curator.
Biographical Sketch Roswell Smith conceived of the idea for St. Nicholas in 1870 when he consulted the famous children's author Mary Mapes Dodge on her ideas about what a magazine for children should be. That same year Smith had co-founded Scribner's with Charles Scribner and Dr. Josiah Gilbert Holland as a rival publication to the popular adult periodicals

Robert M. Hutchins (1899-1977) U.S. university president
I get my exercise acting as a pallbearer to my friends who exercise
Chauncey Depew (1834-1928) U.S. senator
The medical community is at its least equivocal when it comes to the value of regular exercise: the key, doctors assure us, to living a long and healthy life. Yet there are always people who, whether in earnest or in jest, devalue the importance of exercise. Such cynical views are not to be taken seriously. Still, one can't help noting that the three individuals quoted above lived to an average age of 85 years old.
In fact a skeptical view of the value of physical exercise has always exercised a strong persuasive power with me. Part of that is undoubtedly the result of my attentive listening to the words of my more fitness-fixated friends. Attentive enough to observe that the portion of their discourse that isn't devoted to extolling the virtues of strenuous sport and vigorous exercise seems to be disproportionately taken up by language about their torn ligaments, bone spurs, bursitic joints, worn cartilage, and tendonitis, and about the associated pain-killers, anti-inflammatories, and orthoscopic knee operations. And language aside, there's the physical evidence: compared to the bodies of my exercise-advocating friends, mine does indeed exhibit a less developed and defined musculature, less vigor, tone and flexibility; but also far less scar tissue, and an almost complete absence of muscle knots, kinks, pulls, tears, aches or pains.
