    Deland, Margaret
Margaret Deland Brown Brothers (1857-1945), novelist and short-story writer Born on February 23, 1857, in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, Margaretta Wade Campbell grew up in the home of an aunt and uncle in nearby Maple Grove (now part of Allegheny) and later in Manchester. In 1880 she married Lorin F. Deland. The couple together took up the cause of unwed mothers and over a span of four years took some 60 such women and their infants into their own home. At this time Margaret Deland also began writing verse for a greeting-card firm. A short time later a few of her poems were published in Harper's Magazine, and in 1886 a collection of them was published as The Old Garden. In 1888 she published her first novel, John Ward, Preacher. The book was a sensation for its portrayal of the irreconcilable and destructive conflict between a Calvinist minister and his wife, who cannot accept the doctrine of eternal damnation. The conflict of ideas played little part in her subsequent novels, which, while presenting skillfully drawn characters with realistic problems and emotions, were essentially comedies or minor tragedies of middle-class domesticity, insulated from the social and economic issues of the larger world. Deland's novels and short-story collections include Old Chester Tales Dr. Lavender's People

    Unknown Romance Novelists
This is part of the A Celebration of Women Writers , but I have few clues about these women. They are the authors of novels I have from 1850s-1940s, or were taken from lists in old novels or catalogs. The Romance and Mystery writers of today are their literary grand-daughters. One of them is the great-grandmother of a friend - after her husband died, his family refused to help her, so she supported and educated her six children by writing. If you have any information about authors, please let me know : titles, birth or death dates, biographical information. If you have books by authors I haven't listed, I would welcome that too. Eventually the novels will be analysed for what they reflect about the women who wrote and read them, but for now I'm just collecting them. Also see:
