"At this time, the venerable servant of Christ, Bishop Egbert, a man whose name deserves high honour was living a life of exile in Ireland, as I have alreadyt mentioned, in order to attain his heavenly home. He planned to bring blessings to more people by undertaking the apostolic work of preaching the word of God to some of the nations who had not heard it." f. V. 15. "Adamnan, priest and abbot of the monks who lived on the island of Iona, was sent by his nation on a mission to Aldfrid, King of the English, and remained in his province for some while, where he observed the rites of the Church canonically performed."

by Robert Lentz Little is known of St. Declan, except that he was a prince of the Decius tribe of Celts in Ireland. Years before St. Patrick arrived, he was consecrated bishop of Ardmore, in Waterford. Many miracles have been ascribed to him. He is buried in a tiny oratory in Ardmore, near which is his ancient well.
The Celtic peoples found much in Christianity which reminded them of their native spirituality, and adopted the new religion with relative ease. Their local church, however, was considerably different from the church of Rome in many aspects. Rome struggled for centuries to subdue the Celtic church, finally succeeding with the Norman conquest of Ireland in the 11th and 12th centuries. St. Declan harkens back to those earliest days when the Irish had their own truly native expression of Christianity. Betha Decclain The Church at Declan’s Well, Ardmore << When, in the presence of all, he had administered Baptism, Colman spoke this prophecy concerning the infant [St. Declan]: "Truly, beloved child and lord you will be in heaven and on earth most high and holy, and your good deeds, fame, and sanctity will fill all (the four quarters of) Ireland and you will convert your own nation and the Decies from paganism to Christianity. On that account I bind myself to you by the tie of brotherhood and I commend myself to your sanctity." >>
Translated from the Irish
1. The most blessed Bishop Declan of the most noble race of the kings of Ireland, i.e., the holy bishop who is called Declan was of the most noble royal family of Ireland—a family which held the sceptre and exacted tribute from all Ireland at Tara for ages. Declan was by birth of noble blood as will appear from his origin and genealogy, for it was from Eochaidh Feidhleach, the powerful Ardrigh of Ireland for twelve years, that he sprang. St. Declan was, according to some Irish historians, on of those four apostolick Prelates, whom they suppose to have preached the faith of Christ in their island before the coming of St. Patrick. Ercus, lord of the territory of Nandesi (in the county of Waterford ) and descended from the ancient monarchs of Ireland, who held their feat in Temoria, or Taragh in Meath. The legend goes as follows: St Declan returned form Rome via Britain, and left behind him in Wales his bell. He was sea borne when he realized this, and was much grieved by his absent-mindedness - the bell had been gifted to him from Heaven as he celebrated Mass, and was therefore very precious. Declan's prayers for the bell's safe return were answered, when a boulder carrying the bell came sailing over the water to his boat! From there, it sailed before the craft, navigating the way across the channel. Declan vowed before his crew to establish his city and bishopric wherever the bell led him, and so it came to be that he came ashore on an island by the west Waterford coast. A member of his party ascended the hill, and queried the wisdom of setting up on what he called 'this little height'. Declan is said to have replied: "Do not call it little hill, but Great Height."

Translated from the Irish by Rev. P. Power 5. On the completion of seven years Declan was taken from his parents and friends and fosterers to be sent to study as Colman had ordained. It was to Dioma they sent him, a certain devout man perfect in the faith, who had come at that time by God's design into Ireland having spent a long period abroad in acquiring learning. He (Dioma) built in that place a small cell wherein he might instruct Declan and dwell himself. There was given him also, to instruct, together with Declan, another child, scil., Cairbre Mac Colmain, who became afterwards a holy learned bishop. Both these were for a considerable period pursuing their studies together. 6. There were seven men dwelling in Magh Sgiath, who frequently saw the fiery globe which it has been already told they first beheld at the time of Declan's birth. It happened by the Grace of God that they were the first persons to reveal and describe that lightning. These seven came to the place where Declan abode and took him for their director and master. They made known publicly in the presence of all that, later on, he should be a bishop and they spoke prophetically:-"The day, O beloved child and servant of God, will come when we shall commit ourselves and our lands to thee." And it fell out thus (as they foretold), for, upon believing, they were baptised and became wise, devout (and) attentive and erected seven churches in honour of God around Magh Sgiath.
