PEACE Night is o'er England, and the winds are still;
Jasmine and honeysuckle steep the air;
Softly the stars that are all Europe's fill
Her heaven-wide dark with radiancy fair;
That shadowed moon now waxing in the west
Stirs not a rumour in her tranquil seas; Mysterious sleep has lulled her heart to rest, Deep even as theirs beneath her churchyard trees. Secure, serene; dumb now the night-hawk's threat; The guns' low thunder drumming o'er the tide; The anguish pulsing in her stricken side.... All is at peace....But, never, heart, forget: For this her younges, best, and bravest died, These bright dews once were mixed with bloody sweat. "Peace" from Memory and Other Poems PEACE A heart to be at peace with, Wisdom at peace to be; To love no less though loved no more Be all the hope in me.
Updated - Saturday, 11 August, 2001 Walter de la Mare (1873-1956), poet, author, editor and critic, was born on 25 April 1873 in Charlton, Kent and was educated at St. Paul’s Cathedral Choristers’ School until age 16. From 1890 until 1908 he worked for the Anglo-American Oil Company within its statistics department. He published a collection of poetry – Songs of Childhood (1902) – under a pseudonym, Walter Ramal. This was followed by novels, stories, children’s books and several brilliant anthologies, including the novel Memoirs of a Midget (1921) which detailed the often bizarre experiences of the minute Miss Thomasina. Although de la Mare is often considered a children’s author he is famed also for his supernatural collections, including The Connoisseur and Other Stories On the Edge The Riddle and Other Tales , and the novel The Return . During the First World War he wrote a series of patriotic poems. De la Mare’s reputation however was established by The Listener and Other Poems , published in 1912.

01 THE HORSEMAN
I heard a horseman Ride over the hill; The moon shone clear, The night was still; His helm was silver, And pale was he; And the horse he rode Was of ivory.
02 UP AND DOWN
Down the Hill of Ludgate, Up the Hill of Fleet, To and fro and East and West With people flows the street; Even the King of England On Temple Bar must beat For leave to ride to Ludgate Down the Hill of Fleet.
03 MRS. EARTH
Mrs. Earth makes silver black, Mrs. Earth makes iron red But Mrs. Earth can not stain gold, Nor ruby red. Mrs. earth the slenderest bone Whitens in her bosom cold, But Mrs. Earth can change my dreams No more than ruby or gold. Mrs. Earth and Mr. Sun Can tan my skin, and tire my toes, But all that I'm thinking of, ever shall think, Why, either knows.
04 TIRED TIM
Poor Tired Tim! It's sad for him. He lags the long bright morning through, Ever so tired of nothing to do; He moons and mopes the livelong day, Nothing to think about, nothing to say; Up to bed with his candle to creep
