Gallegher's Star ... Gallegher's Stories I know who you're talking about, you say: Leo Gallagher, the comedianthe one who smashes the watermelons. Well, I'm a fan of that Gallagher, too, but to me there is really only one Gallegher , that character created by Richard Harding Davis at the turn of the century, and made into a series of stories on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color from 1965 to 1968. He's the copyboy with a nose for news, whether it be working in the city for The Daily Press, as in the first six of his adventures, or later on out West, as a reporter for the Brimstone Blast One of ten children growing up at the turn of the century, Gallegher is determined not to stay a copyboy for long. Despite the complaints of Mr. Crowley, the city editor forever exasperated at Gallegher's inability to keep his mind on his real job (but secretly admiring the boy's "get up and go"), Gallegher is forever chasing clues and gathering information in the vain hope that Crowley will someday appoint him reporter. Gallegher's closest friend at the Press is Brownie, one of the head reporters, who often must have to cover up or excuse Gallegher's schemes, as well as persuade Crowley to re-hire the boy.

The New Zealand native went to Vietnam in 1962 for the Associated Press, staying with the story through the fall of Saigon and winning a 1966 Pulitzer Prize. As a correspondent for the fledgling cable news during the first Persian Gulf War, he delivered unprecedented reports from behind enemy lines in Baghdad, including an interview with President Saddam Hussein. Arnett returned to Baghdad for the 2003 Iraq War, but was summarily fired for criticizing the American-led war effort during an interview on Iraqi state television.

"It is so good of you to come early," said Mrs. Porter, as Alice Langham entered the drawing-room. "I want to ask a favor of you. I'm sure you won't mind. I would ask one of the debutantes, except that they're always so cross if one puts them next to men they don't know and who can't help them, and so I thought I'd just ask you, you're so good-natured. Richard Davis
Richard Harding Davis was born on April 18th, 1864 in Philadelphia, the son of two writers. Richard attended both Lehigh and Johns Hopkins universities. He became a reporter in Philadelphia and later worked on the New York Evening Sun Davis' first job was as a reporter for the Philadelphia Press . In 1888 he moved to the New York Sun, and he was the managing editor of Harper's Weekly by the age of twenty-six. His stories and articles began attracting attention, and Gallegher and Other Stories , a collection of tales about a detective newsboy, was published in 1891. In 1896, William Randolph Hearst, owner and editor of the New York Journal , commissioned Davis and noted illustrator Frederick Remington to cover the Cuban rebellion against Spanish rule. Davis became the first modern war correspondent. While in Cuba, Davis wrote articles like The Death of Rodriguez , which described the execution of a young Cuban prisoner. This and other articles helped spark U.S. interest in the struggles of the Cuban people. In another article, Davis detailed the strip search of a young Cuban woman, but resigned when Hearst printed that the search had been conducted by male guards (Davis had, in fact, reported that the search had been done by females). Davis refused to work for Hearst after the incident. In 1898, Davis reported for the

In 1896 William Randolph Hearst sent journalist Richard Harding Davis to Cuba to observe the guerrilla warfare being waged against Spain and to inquire into reports of atrocities. Hearst wanted to boost circulation of his recently purchased New York Journal by filling his paper with accounts of rapine and brutality. Initially, Davis noted in his articles that fighting, as in most wars, created unpleasantness, and neither side deserved accolades for decency. Nevertheless, Davis proved influential in drawing the United States into the war when he began to condemn Spanish actions in print. His anger at Spain stemmed primarily from Spanish boardings of American vessels in Cuban waters rather than from the supposed atrocities that other reporters were vigorously documenting—or making up entirely—to stir up anti-Spanish sentiments in the states. This Bison Books edition of Davis's influential 1898 book, beautifully illustrated by Frederic Remington, traces a journalist's abandonment of objectivity and serves as a cautionary tale of the media's—and the public's—susceptibility to grossly sensational accounts of death, pestilence, famine, and war.
