Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882)
Queasiness at the sight of blood curtailed a medical career, and Darwin went to Cambridge to study divinity and join the church. While there, however, an interest in natural history was sparked and he spent most of his leisure time collecting beetles. At 22 he heard about a scientific expedition planning to travel around the world. The expedition would travel by ship, the Beagle, and were looking for a naturalist. Darwin applied and was accepted. They set sail on 27th December 1831. At this time, most people thought that the world they lived in was the same as that created by God thousands of years ago, as described in Genesis. Darwin was little different, adhering to conventional Anglican beliefs. However, he had brought Lyell's Principles of Geology to read on the Beagle. This suggested that the fossils found in rocks were actually evidence of animals that had lived many thousands, even millions, of years ago. Lyell's argument was reinforced in Darwin's own mind by the rich variety of animal life and the geological features he saw during his voyage. Upon reaching South America he observed yet more variety and began pondering the origin of all these species. The clinching evidence came in the Galapagos Islands, a collection of ten hot black volcanic lumps 500 miles west of South America. The Islands were also home to Darwin's most famous specimens, the Galapagos finches, a number of which he shot and kept for further study.

The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs Mongrafi över rankfotingarna 1854 (avhandling)

Darwin's ON THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES BY MEANS OF NATURAL SELECTION, OR THE PRESERVATION OF FAVORED RACES IN THE STRUGGLE OF LIFE, was published on November 24, 1859, and sold out immediately. It was followed by five more editions in his lifetime. The expression "survival of the fittest" did not originate from Darwin's work. Herbert Spencer had already used it in his books about evolutionary philosophy. Though he later described our common ancestor as "a hairy quadruped, furnished with a tail and pointed ears," Darwin did not do so in the famous On the Origin of Species "The presence of a body of well-instructed men, who have not to labor for their daily bread, is important to a degree which cannot be overestimated; as all high intellectual work is carried on by them, and on such work material progress of all kinds mainly depends, not to mention other and higher advantages." Lamarck's Signature : How Retrogenes Are Changing Darwin's Natural Selection Paradigm
(Frontiers of Science (Perseus Books)) by Edward J. Steele, Robyn A. Lindley, Robert V. Blanden, Paul Davies. "The evidence for a Lamarckian mechanism at work in the immune system now seems very convincing, contradicting one of the main dogmas of Darwinian biology. This book presents the experimental evidence to date as to how adaptive immune responses may be incorporated into the DNA of the organism, thus making them heritable material. If the retrogene mechanism is at work in the immune system what other roles might it be playing in evolution? A huge question for our current understanding of evolution."
