Charles Darwin, 1809-1882
Charles Darwin, the discoverer of natural selection, was born at Shrewsbury. His grandfather was Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802, physician, radical, freethinker), his father Dr. Robert Waring Darwin, F.R.S. (1766-1848), and his mother was the daughter of Josiah Wedgewood (1730-1795). After five years at Shrewsbury grammar school, Darwin studied medicine at Edinburgh University (1825-27) and then, with a view to the Church, entered Christ's College, Cambridge (1828). Even before he went to Cambridge, the young Darwin took numerous natural history excursions and delivered his first scientific paper. It was at Cambridge that his biological studies began in earnest. He became acquainted with Professor Henslow who encouraged his interest in zoology and geology. In 1831 Darwin received his B.A. and shortly afterwards was recommended by Henslow as naturalist aboard the H. M. S. Beagle , then about to begin a scientific survey of South American waters. Darwin sailed on 27 December 1831 and did not return to England until 2 October 1836. He visited Tenerife, the Cape Verde Islands, Brazil, Montevideo, Tierra del Fuego, Buenos Aires, Valparaiso, Chile, the Galapagos, Tahiti, New Zealand, Tasmania and the Keeling Islands. It was during this lengthy voyage that Darwin obtained an intimate knowledge of the flora, fauna, and geology of these distinct areas. By 1846 he had published several works on the geological and zoological discoveries of his voyage works that placed him in the front rank of mid-19th century scientists.

The Autobiography of Charles Darwin 1809-1882 > Customer Review #1: A mind becoming a machine to grind out general laws

Darwin wrote his autobiography between the ages of 67 and 73. In the publishers introduction it is noted that Charles Darwin tells of the slow maturing of his mind. A family tree is provided. Charles Darwin was the grandson of Erasmus Darwin and the son of Robert and Emma, nee Wedgwood. His mother died when he was eight. In boyhood he had a passion for collecting. Charles Darwin went to Dr. Butlers school in Shrewsbury until age sixteen. As a young boy he enjoyed solitary walks. Dr. Butlers school was strictly classical. He found the odes of Horace to his liking. He reports his father had excellent powers of observation. The father was a physician who hated the sight of blood but was able to divine the character of others. He possessed an extraordinary memory for dates and other facts. Charles Darwin was taught Euclid by a private tutor. Clear geometric proofs gave him intense satisfaction. As a boy Darwin enjoyed literature, Shakespeare included. Later in life he lost his pleasure in poetry. He was the cousin of Francis Galton. He once wondered why every gentleman did not become an ornithologist. He assisted his brother in chemical experiments.

Each family, among the animals as well as among the plants, comes from the same origin, and even that all animals are come from but one animal, which, in the succession of eras . . . has produced all the races of animals that now exist.
George Louis LeClerc, Compte de Buffon (1707-1788)
There is a grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed by the Creator into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being evolved.

"The geology of St. Iago is very striking yet simple: a stream of lava formerly flowed over the bed of the sea, formed of triturated recent shells and corals, which it baked into a hard white rock. Since then the whole island has been upheaved. But the line of white rock revealed to me a new and important fact, namely that there had been afterwards subsidence round the craters, which had since been in action, and had poured forth lava. It then first dawned on me that I might write a book on the geology of the countries visited, and this made me thrill with delight. That was a memorable hour to me. . . ." ( Autobiography , p. 81).

Darwin, Charles Robert 1809-1882 C harles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, the grandson of Erasmus Darwin. His mother was a daughter of Josiah Wedgewood of the famous firm making distinguished china. Darwin was educated at Shrewsbury school under Samuel Butler and in 1825 he entered Endinburgh University to prepare for the medical profession. In 1828 he entered Cambridge University in the hope of becoming a clergyman. He took his degree in 1831. From December 1831 to October 1836 he sailed in H.M.S. "Beagle" as a naturalist. He visited many places including the Atlantic islands, South American Coast, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand and other islands. He also visited Brazil. In 1839 he married his cousin and moved in 1842 to Kent which was his home the rest of his life. In 1856 he started to write an explanation of his views but in June 1858 he received a manuscript from Alfred Henry Wallace in which he found a complete abstract of his own theory of natural selection. Wallace's essay and an abstract of Darwin's work was sent to the Linnean Society. The title of the joint communication was "On the Tendency of Species to Form Varieties: and on the Presentation of Varieties and Species by Natural Selection," (July 1, 1858).

M ost educated people in Europe and the Americas during the 19th century had their first full exposure to the concept of evolution through the writings of Charles Darwin . Clearly, he did not invent the idea. That happened long before he was born. However, he carried out the necessary research to conclusively document that evolution has occurred and then made the idea acceptable for scientists and the general public. This was not easy since the idea of evolution had been strongly associated with radical scientific and political views coming out of post-revolutionary France. These ideas were widely considered to be a threat to the established order in Britain. Charles Darwin
C harles Darwin was born into a moderately wealthy family in Shrewsbury, England. His father, Robert, had the largest medical practice outside of London at the time and his mother, Susannah Wedgwood, was from a family of wealthy pottery manufacturers. Charles grew up in comparative luxury in a large house with servants. However, this was a socially very conservative time in England that set narrow limits on a young man's behavior and future possibilities. The constraints on women in Darwin's social class were even greater. Most were given only enough education to efficiently manage the homes of their future husbands and raise their children. Young men were expected to go to university in order to prepare themselves to become medical doctors, military officers, or religious leaders in the Church of England. Most other occupations were considered somewhat unsavory.

Charles Darwin
Profile
Naturalist and author famous for promotion of the theory of natural selection. Darwin was born at The Mount in Shrewsbury , the fifth child of Dr. Robert Waring Darwin and Susannah (eldest daughter of Josiah Wedgwood). He was the grandson of the botanist and poet, Erasmus Darwin . His parents were Unitarians and worshipped at the High Street Unitarian Church where there is a commemorative tablet to Charles, even though he was baptised at St. Chad's Church. He was educated at home initially and then at a day school kept by the Rev. Case at 13 Claremont Hill. In 1818 Charles was sent as a boarder to Shrewsbury School then in the original building at Castle Gates, where conditions for the boys were decidedly austere. The building now houses Shrewsbury Library and has been restored to its Elizabethan splendour. At the front entrance is an imposing statue of Darwin erected in 1897. An interesting account of his schooldays appeared in The life and letters of Charles Darwin (1887) edited by his son, Francis.
