Charles Robert Darwin
Biologe, Naturforscher Charles Robert Darwin * 12.

Beagle. The Beagle A Naturalist's Voyage on the Beagle (1839). Darwin, reflecting on his observation, developed a theory of evolution. According to this theory, individual variability means that some organisms have a slight advantage over others. The advantage will allow the organisms to compete better in the "struggle for existence" and produced more offspring, which will inherit the advantageous qualities. The process whereby favorable traits in the most "fit" animals allow it to survive and reproduce, Darwin called "natural selection." He included the idea of "sexual selection" in his theory, stating that the struggle for possession of females will lead the most vigorous males producing the most progeny. Darwin was probably influenced in his formulation of evolution by the Uniformitarian views expressed in Lyell's Principles of Geology

Charles Robert Darwin (February 12, 1809 - April 19, 1882), British Naturalist. Charles Darwin developed the first theory of a naturalistic mechanism for evolution, that of natural selection, it explains the diversification of life through a lengthy process of change by adaptation. He was born in Shrewsbury, England, the fifth of six children of Robert and Susannah Darwin ( née Wedgwood), and the grandson of Erasmus Darwin , and of Josiah Wedgwood. After finishing school, Darwin studied medicine in Edinburgh in 1825. His dislike for dissection and the brutality of surgery at the time led him to leave the medical school in 1827. Whilst there, however, he was influenced by the Lamarckian
Based on these thoughts, he formulated his thoughts about the changes and developments of species in his Notebook on the Transmutation of Species , which was in accordance with Lyell 's Principles of Geology and Thomas Malthus' Essay on the Principle of Population , which stated that the size of a population is limited by the food resources available. In 1842, Darwin formulated a short "Pencil Sketch" of his theory and by 1844 had written a 240 page "Essay" which provides an expanded version of his early ideas on natural selection. Between 1844 and 1858, when he would prevent his theory to the Linnean Society of London, Darwin would modify his theory in a number of ways. Darwin married his cousin Emma Wedgwood in 1839. After living for a number of years in London, the couple eventually moved to Downe House, in Downe, Kent (which is now open to public visits, south of Orpington). Darwin and his wife had ten children, three of whom died early. Between 1839 and 1843, Darwin's

Charles Robert Darwin

Darwin, Charles (1809-1882)
After studying medicine and preparing at Cambridge University for the ministry, Darwin became a naturalist. From 1831 to 1836 he studied the specimens he had collected while on a surveying expedition with the ship Beagle along the coast of South America.
In 1859 Darwin published The Origin of Species perhaps the most important book of the century. He contended that "species have been modified during a long course of descent ... chiefly through the normal selection of numerous successive, slight, favourable variations." Darwin's evolutionary theory presented a major challenge to evangelicals. If there was no overseeing eye of Providence in creation, if in fact there was no creation at all but merely an evolution from simple to more complex forms of matter and energy, what was left of traditional Christian belief in a creating and sustaining God? If Darwin was right, how could the Bible be true?
He followed his first bombshell with a second in 1871, his Descent of Man applied the natural selection to human beings and reached the controversial conclusion that man's ancestors were probably monkey-like animals.

Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin, a naturalist, developed the theory of natural selection . He was born in Shrewsbury, England on Feb. 12, 1809. His father was also a naturalist and a physician. His mother died when he was eight. Darwin was the first of the evolutionary biologists . At age sixteen, Darwin left Shrewsbury to study medicine at University of Edinbourgh . However, he could not continue in the studies because the sight of surgery performed without anesthesia repelled him. Eventually, Darwin attended Cambridge University to study to become a clergyman. After he graduated, he went on a five-year scientific expedition to the pacific coast of South America on the H.M.S. Beagle from 1831 - 1836. On the Origin of Species was published in 1859 describing evolution and natural selection and giving a theoretical explanation for the diversity among living and fossil beings. His book was not well received among the general population who felt threatened at the notion that humans were descended from ape-like creatures. The scientific community, however, did grasp his theories and today his book forms the basis for many contemporary archaeological theories. In 1839 he married his cousin, Emma Wedgewood. After this, he spent much of his spare time gardening and raising pigeons. Charles Darwin lived with his wife and children at their home on Downe, England. It is thought that he may have contracted some kind of illness during his travels in South America. He died on April 19, 1882 and is buried at Westminster Abbey.

Darwin, Charles Robert (1809-1882)
Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England. His father was a successful provincial physician, and his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802), had been a distinguished intellectual figure. Young Darwin attended the Shrewsbury School, and his early failure to achieve academic distinction continued at Edinburgh University, where he studied medicine, and at Cambridge University, where he studied theology. While at Cambridge, however, Darwin enthusiastically pursued natural history as an avocation, drawing the attention of botanist John Stevens Henslow (1796-1861) and geologist Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873). In 1831, through his connection with Henslow, Darwin joined the expedition team aboard the survey ship H.M.S. Beagle The Origin of Species to ensure his own work would receive recognition.
