April 1999 Classical Poet: Dante Alighieri (1265-1321)
By: Roberto Quintos , Contributing Writer
The greatest of Italian poets, Dante Alighieri is generally considered with Shakespeare and Goethe as one of the three universal masters in Western literature. His masterpiece, 'The Divine Comedy', is the most important Christian poem. Dante's use of the Italian language in place of Latin in the poem influenced the course of European literature throughout the ages.
Dante was born in Florence between May 15 and June 15, 1265, to a family of lesser nobility. The essential facts of his early life are told in his 'The New Life', written in about 1293. He met the Beatrice of his later poems when he was 9. Although it is unlikely that they ever exchanged more than a few words, Dante's love for her never died. His marriage to Gemma di Manetto Donati had been arranged as early as 1277, and they had three sons and one daughter.
Dante's education gave him a mastery of the Latin learning of the day. As a citizen of one of the chief city-republics he played a part in the violent political and military conflicts that engulfed Italy (see Guelfs and Ghibellines). A leader of the White Guelfs, he rose to high office in Florence and was sent as an ambassador to the pope in Rome in 1301.
The victory of the more extreme party in Florence, the Black Guelfs, resulted in the banishment of the leaders of the opposite party, the White Guelfs. Dante was among those sent into exile in 1302. He lived in various places in Italy until at length he settled in Ravenna, where he died on Sept. 14, 1321. A small tomb in Ravenna holds the poet's remains.

APPUNTAMENTO ALL'INFERNO:
Dante Alighieri e i sodomiti.

DIVINA COMMEDIA OF DANTE ALIGHIERI: CONSISTING OF THE INFERNO, PURGATORIO, AND PARADISO. Translated by the Rev. Henry Boyd, A.M. London For T. Cadell Jun. and W. Davies, In the Strand 1802 RARE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE COMPLETE DIVINE COMEDY OF DANTE. Henry Boyd was a native of Ireland and was most probably educated at Dublin University. In 1802 he issued his three volumes of an English verse translation of the whole 'Divina Commedia' of Dante, with the preliminary essays, notes, and illustrations and dedicated it to Viscount Charleville whose chaplain the author is described to be in the title page. In the dedication Boyd states that the terrors of the Irish rebellion had driven him from the post of danger at Lord Charleville's side to seek a safe asylum in a 'remote angle of the province'. He worked on translations of the ORLANDO FURIOSO and in 1807 he issued the 'Triumphs of Petrarca'.
Copies of the first complete COMMEDIA of Dante into English are very scarce indeed.

Dante - The Sansovino Edition - 1578
A Folio Copy in Contemporary Italian Vellum Dante Alighieri, (1265-1321)
With a fine woodcut title page, backed, and 96 woodcut illustrations, including three full-page, 77 large cuts in the text, and head- and tailpieces. Printer's woodcut device on the final leaf. Large 4to (308 x 214 mm), full antique Italian vellum, spine with morocco lettering label gilt, bands on the spine and discreet tooling also in gilt. Ff. [28], 392 (4). A handsome copy, quite crisp and clean. This is the very fine folio edition with a portrait of Dante, done after Sessa's 1564 edition, the first edited by Sansovino. It incorporates two commentaries: that of Christoforo Landino, which first appeared in the Florentine edition of 1481, and the noteworthy commentary of Alessandro Velutello, first published at Venice in 1544. The volume includes extensive introductory matter by all three commentators, and a running commentary that virtually overwhelms the poem itself.
The woodcuts in this edition are taken from those in Velutello's edition of 1544 and represent a departure, both iconographically and stylistically, from those in the Brescia, 1487 editionthey appear more accomplished and more confident in execution. This is also the first edition of Dante's works to include a portrait of the poet.Christoforo Landino was a member of the literary circle which surrounded Lorenzo de' Medici; in addition to his Dante (which originally appeared in 1481) he also edited Horace and Virgil and translated Pliny's NATURAL HISTORY.
